Why are Female Main Characters outnumbering Males in Games with Good Stories?

  • In the last decade women were brought down and sexualized a lot in video games, so people started making more female protagonists with more significant roles than there were in the 90's, a little bit of affirmative action back in the early 00's that had stuck on to this decade.

Now that the opportunity of playing a new game as a male or female is pretty much the same, it kind of stuck, but should be toned down to an equal number of female/male characters in future video games (or not, who gives a shit).

To be honest, it's not like I really give a fuck as long as the game is good.

  • If we want to talk females in games. How come every adult female that is the protagonist in a video game is conventionally attractive? Is it to satisfy our lustful power fantasies? Or is it because that's what sells?

  • Because gaming is a form of escapism, no one fantasises about being unattractive, the same could be said about the male characters aswell. I personally like the over exagerated big boobied manga girl style. dead or alive cracks me up thoses titties have a mind of there own

  • My guess its to satisfy the 12 year old boy market.

  • Ok, fine then. I can accept that. Why then is there so many games that are huge sellers that have you control an unconventionally attractive male like Marcus from Gears of War or Kane and Lynch?

I feel that if games really wanted to mature, one step is to erase the sense of "power fantasy" masculinity that over-permeates the game industry. Have us control a women who isn't conventionally attractive or appealing to our penises. I mean; I love Jill Valentine, Rayne, Lara Croft, and Rubi Malone as much as the next guy. But, I'd like to see a developer take a chance and create a female character that we control that isn't necessarily "easy on the eyes." If not just to be interesting.

You mad bro? I'd love to see your definition of 'good' BTW. Last I checked, Resident Evil 6 had objectively more male protagonists AND a pretty rubbish plot.

  • If i remember rightly those guys where both built like brick shit houses not realistic at all. I don't have a penis and im not gay I know the difference between real life and game phyicality and getting turned on by pixels is just wierd, I like stylised over the top character design. I dont look at lara croft and cry that I dont look like her, her boobs and waist are cartoony (or at least were). Are you offended or are you worried other people will be

  • Well I guess they don't count either then, like I said I don't understand why the OP says that female protagonists are outnumbering male protagonists in games with good stories because they really aren't.

Both TWDS2 and Burial at Sea's stories are absolute shit too.

    Neither, just food for thought.

Eh, if a fictional character is attractive, I don't see a problem with admitting they're pretty. As long as it doesn't border on obsession. It's acknowledgment as far as I'm concerned.

And I don't look like Kratos or Nathan Drake. In fact, I'm extremely skinny and have the muscle of a small insect. And although I enjoy the large plethora of games where I can sit back and go on a power fantasy, I'd also like some games that can feature a protagonist as scrawny as I am. Just like I'd like games to feature a female lead that didn't look like a runway model. Just for fresh air.

I don't think a reason is necessary. If the story is good, it's good. Who cares whether the protagonist is male or female.

With all the complaints feminists make about how women are portrayed in video games, you'd swear developers should just give up entirely.
