Fables: Werewolves of the Heartlands; the ending...

I remember at the end of Werewolves of the Heartlands; Oda mutters that she and Bigby aren't done yet...

Oda had a prophecy that Bigby would come to Story City and she even tried to seduce him into sleeping with her (which failed much to my relief)

Even though this Graphic Novel was one of the worst stories for Fables (the art wasn't great and parts of the story didn't make sense cuz they weren't explained properly) I feel that the cliffhanger ending, however small it was, needs to be explored in some way...

What do you think?

  • I liked Werewolves of the heartland, and I think what she said was just her not wanting Bigby to leave

  • I wasn't so keen on it tbh; the artwork was not good, all the pastel colouring was dull and it was hard to tell people apart...

Bigby's blood makes you a Werewolf? That doesn't sound right given what Bigby is... (Unless Willingham is implying that because Bigby is infected with Lycanthropy, then the curse is in his blood and can be transferred that way... But that detail is never explained)

Also a tranquilliser dart knocks out Bigby for several hours?? You have to be shitting me!

While I share your opinion on the artwork (it wasn't the best. Probably would have been better if they just had Buckingham do the Artwork), I agree with Poogers; I liked the Werewolves of Heartland.

I liked the fact that Bigby got his own solo-tale/spin-off away from the main series, and I liked the fact he was put in a new Fabletown-like situation where he wasn't in complete control, against all odds, and being thrown in the deep end. The fact that the community was all werewolves community was interesting as well. While the art was not to my liking, the book did show great action scenes (and Bigby being badass in his semi-wolf, and Big Bad Wolf form).

And besides, while Oda comes nowhere near to Snow as companion for Bigby (Bigby is Snow's and Snow is Bigby's), I liked her as well (in fact, I think she was pretty much the only likable known character in the entire book, the rest of town either wanted to kill Bigby [or were conspiring to], or were just innocent civilians, but had no prominent role in the story so......)

It's been a while since I read the volume (I'll probably go through the whole series again, minus Jack of Fables after the main series ends), but doesn't the book explain how Bigby's war buddy (Sergeant) Arthur Harp was turned into Werewolf?

I thought Nazis extracted Some of Bigby's blood in a vial, and when the castle blew up, the impact caused Bigby's blood in the vial to be mixed up(infused) with blood of people who were dying, but not quite dead yet (so Harp and the Nazi lady who becomes his wife). I thought that was what happened in the book (if my memory serves me correctly). And Harp and Nazi lady went around giving their blood to people who were nearly dead/dying or was thinking of dying, and started building a community (again, need to check the comics again...just plucking this right out of my memory).

Bigby was infected with Lycanthropy. Back when all Fables were at homelands, and for some time originally after he crossed over to mundy world, he was only able to be in his Big Bad Wolf form. The reason he was able to change between human and wolf form was because he was cut with the Lycanthropy knife by Snow, remember (The Wolf in the Fold)?

Also, I wouldn't underestimate the mundy weapons/tools. Afterall, they were used to take down the Adversary.

And with Bigby not in his Big Bad Wolf form (I think the bigger the animal/being is, the more potent and larger amount of tranquilizer you need to put it down, in this case, Bigby was in his human form), I don't have much issue with that (probably just about any Fable in human form would likely have the same reaction, unless the Fable is basically god-level, like the 4 cardinal Winds, Dark Man, Hope and Santa).

  • You raise good points sir as always!

I don't necessarily hate this Novel; you are right in that it's a solo story with Bigby doing what he does best and ensuring that he remains faithful to his beloved wife. I just felt that things weren't explained well enough like how Bigby's blood could turn people into Werewolves...

Also I remember almost everything that happens in Fables and the spin-offs (my mind works like that you see) Just because someone has read A Wolf In The Fold doesn't mean that they will instantly click 'his blood contains Lycanthropy!' Something like that should've been pointed out somewhere.

But unlike other stories in the series, this one is easy to miss out cuz the story that it tells has zero impact on the main story!

  • Probably more crystal clear way of them showing it would have been characters being injected with a needle which contains Bigby's blood (like in typical horror movies/TV series where those mad scientists do to their testing in human test subjects with monster blood, and watch the reaction of what happens - will the subjects turn into a monster or simply die?).

But both Harp and the Nazi lady were full of holes (i.e. bullet wounds), and most likely Bigby's blood entered their bloodstream through their wounds, and their human blood fused with Bigby's blood (and their new fused werewolf blood doing the healing process),

Yeah, the connection is not that easy too establish. Probably a flashback scene to Wolf in the Fold, or a thought bubble from Bigby may have made it more clear, but at least you know now :)

It's one of those stories where it's not mandatory to read. I see good and bad points from that. Bad points would obviously be it doesn't really impact the main story (like you said), so it could be seen as kinda unimportant to Fables universe/canon. Though good points would be it gives more insight about Bigby to his fans, and shows a different environment (also, unlike other spin-offs, this one's really easy to find out exactly where it goes in the actual Fables universe timeline.

  • Yeah it is easy to find it's place in the timeline.

I guess I just wanted more out of it... For some reason I REALLY DESPERATELY want a Graphic Novel in which Bigby and Snow (after they have been married of course) go on an adventure of their own, just the two of them and they have to rely on each others abilities to survive.

Basically Volume 3 in the mountains but they're already a happy couple and they have more dangers to overcome; you never know, maybe such a Novel isn't impossible :D

  • Maybe it's possible when they go back to homelands (though I guess that would be after the end of Fables)?

Anyhow, Willingham better give them a happy ending!! (If not, I have a feeling I'll be crying for days......)

  • If he kills them both off after putting them through so much then what was the point? Also he resurrects Bigby and we see glimpses of him, killing him off would be pointless as well!

Bigby and Snow are the poster characters for Fables like you said, getting rid of them would be a massive kick to the balls for the fans. Remember that the fans are asking for more Fables, Willingham needs to make a living somehow :P

I wouldn't care if their adventure was in the Homelands or the Mundane world; I just think it would be nice to see what they're like when it's just the two of them around strangers and enemies. Seeing how they work together would be fun!! XD
