I don't really like Andrew. He acted Spidey like a fucking hipster. Tobey was my favourite. I read most of the comics and when I heard that Tobey was going to star in the movie I was like "What?" But when I watched the movie, I knew that nobody could have portrayed Peter better. It's just an opiniona though.
Tobey Maguire's portrayal of Spider-Man was highly flawed. In both the Peter Parker AND especially the Spider-Man side.
Peter was a shy a… morend quiet person when he was younger. When he was bitten by the spider and became the Web-Slinger we know & love he became a more confident person. He was still awkward and kept that blank facial expression for nearly every scene in the Raimi trilogy. I could never tell at times if he was confused or just had a blank stare. Peter became a confident person in the comics, but you would NEVER believe that in the Raimi films. He was still the level - 1 high school nerd the entire Raimi trilogy.
As for Spider-Man... where do I start? He didn't act like Spider-Man at all, period. He only made one witty retort in the entire series "Here's your CHANGE!" and even then it didn't feel like Spider-Man. Why? By that point it was simply too late. Spider-Man was butchered in the Raimi series. I have NO IDEA why pe… [view original content]
Same. People can say what they want about Tobey, but I like his dorky portrayal Peter. I still laugh at "That's a cute outfit, did your husband give it to you?"

I liked Tobey and I have never liked Garfield. I thought the first Spidey trilogy was cheesy but enjoyable (Well.....The third was....) and I don't like the new ones, We'll see what happens next....

But he doesn't act like how Peter Parker should act. Like, at all. I always considered him a blank slate. I think he was made like that so people identify more with him, but he had two facial expressions throughout the trilogy. He's not got the character of Spider-Man at all (heck, he himself said he never read a comic of Spider-Man in his life prior to the role). And that was the part that made me really, really not like him. I even remember when I was child thinking of things he could've said that would've made him more "Peter Parker-y and Spider-Man-y". I could go on and on about how different he is to the comic Peter. And Garflied being a "Hipster"? It's a character re-invented in the 2010's. It's still a great way to make him a social outcast. The original origin story from 1962 might have been hard to adapt in the modern era. Heck Ultimate Spider-Man even portrayed him in a light like that, without the skateboards. The 2000's Spider-Man movies are dumb. Really dumb. And honestly if they came out today people would be cringing at them. Badly as a matter of fact, we hold them due to precious nostalgia like the Reeve Superman movies. Plus it REALLY annoys me that back then, the really bad flaws of the films were overlooked but nowadays one tiny flaw ends up being the reason for considering it the worst movie ever (CoughMARYJANEISUSELESScough).
Otto Octavius and J. Jonah Jameson were done excellently in it though. They NEED JK Simmons back for the MCU if they decide to bring back the Daily Bugle's angry editor. He was the most entertaining part of the entire Raimi trilogy.
The Nostalgia Critic brought up the most valid points on the Old vs. New on Spider-Man, I fully agreed with his points on it.
By the way, sorry about this rant. I Just really don't get why people like him. Maybe if they don't know Peter or Spider-Man at all or was their first Spider-Man MAYBE that'll be the reason. But Spider-Man has never been perfectly portrayed in film. He has been in animation however (Spectacular Spider-Man). But the fact that people still hold Maguire with such a high regard upsets me even. It worries me that in the MCU movies that might make Peter a wooden plank again so they'll feel like they've got their precious Tobey back. Because making a Spider-Man who actually was more accurate to the comics was actually not well received.

Thanks for stating your opinion and I respect your opinion. It doesn't matter who's going to play Peter. But please stop ranting. I am not saying this in any mean but I just want us to get along in this discussion. Thank you.

Okay, but please keep in mind this is strictly your opinion, not a fact. I can't stand the Amazing reboot, but I'm not going to rant about it and claim that it's shit when this is all subjective. You think Tobey's Spider-Man and the Raimi movies are stupid, but that doesn't mean we have to. I honestly don't care how unfaithful they are to the comics, they're entertaining, and that's really all that should matter. Don't get yourself upset over something as simple as this. We're Spider-Man fans regardless, and we should get along.

I didn't mean to start an argument with that post, and I know it's only my opinion. But as someone who's dedicated to everything the Wall-Crawler I think I actually wrote too little. :P

Yeah, and since he plays him in Disney's Ultimate Spider-Man I'm going to actually keep my hopes up on that. His portrayal of JJJ would work quite well in the MCU.
Except Peter is never suppose to be this caricature of a nerd stereotype. Peter even in highschool has evolve into a more confident person. Tobey throughout the trilogy was this wooden doll throughout the trilogy. Rarely emotes, making weird eyes, always soft spoken, nothing making Peter petr.
Garfield was never much of a hipster but more of today's geeks. He was still awkward and geeky and even a better actor than maguire. Please remember what Peter has always been like in the comics

J.K. Simmons said he would totally play J. Jonah Jameson if given the chance again.
Hey, it's a forum. ranting is to be expected. And I'm not trying to start a war here. Getting along is important. Obviously.

He's better with the street level team than the avengers
