Anyone else a fan of Riot Grrrl music?

I fucking love it. Smashing the patriarchy, throwing shapes, killing all men and eating the rich.

The music is incredibly powerful. So many amazing bands, such as Bikini Kill in particular, are just so goddamn cool, but my favourite is definitely bratmobile. Their music and lyrics are just so powerful and they talk about how class and race is fucked over by the patriarchy as well as the sex discrimination. For example, of the amazing lyricism:

"Bury some liberal in the ground, you didn't care if she was found"

Anyone else love the musical political movement?

  • I feel like I've heard of it somewhere, but I'm not familiar.

I'll check 'em out though. They seem alright.

I'm personally into more aggressive thrash-punk, but I also enjoy more alternative punk every now and again.

Lots of Riot Grrrl is aggressive punk. E.g:

"It's hard to talk with your dick in my mouth, I will try to scream in pain a little nicer next time. White boy, dont laugh, dont cry, just DIE.''

'I'm so sorry if i'm alienating some of you! :((((( .....YOUR WHOLE FUCKING CULTURE ALIENATES ME!!!'

  • NOPE.

That was a very abrupt response to a speculative and purposefully exaggerative musical movement. Why do you reject it so vehemently?

  • Never heard of them to be honest, that one video you included I couldnt get through as I didnt like their voices at all. I'm guessing their Indie? The lyrics are .... okay I guess I mean most songs have a message

  • An amazing band for sure. One of my personal favorites in the thrash-punk realm (and one of the first too).

Nah not indie at all! It's basically punk, but really Riot Grrrl is its own genre.

To be honest their voices aren't really 'supposed' to sound pleasant or anything. Like the movements just about people screaming in frustration about discrimination and singing regardless of musical talent but rather dependent on how pissed off they are.

Most songs have a message...yeah sort of. Most song's messages are ust about generic love though. This is a whole movement focusing on one specific thing and thats what gives it power.

I like what this genre stands for but the music could have a little effort put into composition of the tracks I get what you mean about thr fact ability doesn't matter thats what I love about punk but they could at least try to write a melody the rammones were shit musically but they were still talented if that makes sense. you go grrrl

  • I enjoyed the song but its not something I would really listen to.

Folk-Punk is really the only type of punk music I really listen to lately.

About a decade before and a decade after riot grrrl :P

Me too, it's too bad it often get's a bad rep as being racist simply because Skinheads adopted the counter-culture. But I think Discharge was UK punk or part of the anorcho-punk movement.
