Firefly/Serenity. Spoilers, if they can be considered such at this point.

"Ever seen Firefly? Watch Firefly! Firefly is such a good show. That reminds me of Firefly! Go watch Firefly!"

FUCK! Okay!! I'll waste my time on a 10 year old, single season + a movie show. Obviously it won't be very good because it only got one season though!

Go to watch it.

Wait.... it's over? But....... I wasn't done!!!!

After the child-like temper tantrum subsides all I can do is lean back in my chair and mourn the loss of such great story, writing, characters, and cast.

River was by far my favorite character (not to speak lowly of the others). Her crazy banter that, upon second glance, make complete sense (usually), her breakdowns (both emotionally and her many breaks with reality) were extraordinary, her acting was convincing, and her dilemma was engrossing. I miss her the most.

Simon was my least favorite. I loved the idea of his character, and his interactions with River often had me grinning without realising it or questioning myself. His actor, though, was not great in my opinion. Many times his portrayal of the character (though vocal and facial awkwardness) had me grimacing.

I have an article opened in my browser that talks about Nathan Fillion talking about returning to the series, but since it's a few years old I would have to assume that never worked. In any case it's sad to see such a great show canceled.

What did you guys think of the show? Like it, love it, hate it? Why? What were your favorite parts if you did, favorite character, favorite angle, favorite quote, whatever!

  • Didn't they make a film that served as a series finale?

Anyway, I've heard of the show and I heard it was very well done and one of Joss Whedon's finest creations, even if you always got the Whedon detractors saying, "there's too much quipping and humor."

  • I loved the show. Favorite character was easily Mal, but I loved pretty much everyone else as well. Favorite Episodes would definitely be Jaynestown (Classic), War Stories, and Ariel. Everything about those episodes, man, just made me fall in love.

The series managed to combine two of my favorite genres: Westerns and Sci-Fi. With plenty of humor, which is also a big plus for me. The rodent who axed this series before its time will burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

  • They did have a movie to serve as the last two episodes of the series. I'm so glad they went that extra step to serve as some sort of semblance of closure. Most cancelled series don't get such a nice sending off (which I guess speaks of how good it was?).

I'm not sure what else Joss Whedon has done, but after this series I just might go out of my way to see what else he has to offer. As for too much humor? I found that a large part of the appeal, especially when the humor was so expertly placed (for instance at the end of Ariel when Jayne is about to get turned into a pancake and they have the serious, meaningful moment followed by a classic "Jayne moment."

It sounds like you haven't watched the series though, do you ever intend to?

  • Nathan is a great actor! Ariel is probably one of my favorite episodes, along with Safe, partly because we get to see River's character blossoming a lot in those two. Jaynestown was a good one. Really funny and ended with a quite sentimental point. Wasn't a huge fan of how they handled stitch, instead of introducing him I think they should have focused more on the mayor (or whatever his title was) and his son, and the tension between the two culminating in what happened near the end (as it sat it felt kind of out of the blue, not bad, just not much build up to the treasonous act). War stories was great, only disappointed that Niska (spelling?) got away and as far as I know they never wrapped up that story line fully. They may have in Serenity, but I don't recall it if they did.

I've actually never been interested in westerns. Most are archaic and just never pull my curiosity. Love scifi though, and the series was one of my top favorites! (I've actually yet to watch the final episode, Object in Space which opened beautifully by placing us in the shoes of River as we watch the "chaos," as she puts it, unfold through her eyes. Followed by her answering the question not posed to her with "She understands, she doesn't comprehend," or something to that effect.)

The person who actually cut the series said it was very hard for her to do. She was very involved with the creation of the show, but the ratings weren't high enough apparently. The road to hell is paved with blah blah blah.

But I digress, I just finished the series (almost) and had to talk to other people interested in it too!

Random note: I watched Serenity a long time ago and never knew it had a series before the movie. It wasn't until I started watching the show and recognized the characters that I realized there was a lead up to it :p

  • I don't know, maybe sometime in the future.

Joss Whedon is famous for a popular X-Men comic book run, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and the Avengers franchise.

  • Joss Whedon did Buffy and Avengers? I guess I am a bit familiar with his work after all.

  • Addendum: I watch the reviewer JeremyJahns on YouTube quite a bit. I usually agree with his assessments and he has prevented me from wasting my time on half assed movies on more than one occasion. After recently becoming such a huge fan of Firefly/Serenity I watched his review of the show. He made the comment about having telltale make a series following the adventures of The Serenity. How awesome would that be?!?

  • Well, I suppose Tales could be a start, as that series is mostly action packed with quip characters playing off of each other with a playful tone, heck I'd suspect that Firefly was one of the inspirations for writing Tales from the Borderlands from what I've seen of Tales: Episode 1 and from very little I've seen but heard a lot about Firefly.

  • Telltale has shown themselves to be very good at the kind of story telling that Firefly/Serenity is. They've shown ability with comedic whit (though I'm not quite sure they have expressed the same kind that is in F/S), very good dialogue that plays off of the dialogue of other characters (which is where F/S's specific type of humor comes in), great characters, and overall great plot/story. Plus if they did it this way they could actually bring back the original actors to voice their characters! (But that's probably just a fool's wish, someone like Nathan probably won't take such a huge step backwards in his career for a nostalgia boost.) The only thing that may pose a legitimate problem from the start could be the game play style of TTG games. I'm not sure how well it would play with mostly QTES and the random little puzzle, I'd have to think about that aspect a little more.

PS. Thanks for chatting with me, even if you haven't seen the show its nice to have someone to talk with about it haha. (Since few others seem interested in the topic around here.)
