Nintendo NX (Nintendo's New Console)

At a press conference announcing their big mobile gaming deal, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has also spoken briefly (and surprisingly) about Nintendo's next piece of dedicated hardware.

Seeking to put off questions that Nintendo's future would be entirely mobile, Iwata says that Nintendo is still very much in the "dedicated video game system MARKET", and that their next piece of gaming hardware is code-named the "NX"

"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game BUSINESS on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems", he said.

"On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before."

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business", Iwata adds, "let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."

And...that's it. Iwata says Nintendo will SHARE more information about the new hardware "next year".

While it's easy to suspect that this new device will be a replacement for the ailing Wii U, the fact this is Nintendo using the words "brand new concept" mean it could be anything.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but Nintendo really don't interest me enough to warrant investing in their hardware anymore. Since they sold Rare, they've only had a handful of games I've been interested in. Against my better judgement, I bought a Wii u thinking despite the lack of games, the ones they do have are really good. I've yet to see that though. The Mario games are just going through the motions, got bored of Donkey Kong tropical Freeze and I preferred Sega All Stars Racing transformed to Mario Kart 8 - which, again, felt like they were just going through the motions. Splatoon, Starfox and Zelda are my last hopes otherwise I'm going to get rid of it I think.

I don't have a powerful PC, but most of the games I play have been running smoothly and are on PC, so I'm thinking of just sticking with that now for the future. Maybe I'm just showing my age haha.

  • Well, everybody is different, personally, the Wii U has exceeded my expectations, best console of this generation. at least in my opinion.

  • Nintendo is gonna really have to surprise me to win me back......you know some 3rd party games.....

  • I wonder what this new concept will be. I think they confirmed it wouldn't be a hybrid console. Guess we'll have to wait a year to find out what it is.

Well, I'll buy it for the big N's IPs and the occasional 3rd party exclusives.

  • Well a majority of third party games lately have been.. y'know... not good.

  • Used to like it but haven't really been that captured by it recently.

  • I JUST got the Wii U. Now they announce a new one?! What the hell?!

  • Keep in mind that new consoles take a long as shit time to make. I would bet that Microsoft and Sony have already started work on their next ones too. Their just quiet about it. Any smart business would do it. Besides, by the time the new console is released, it will be time for the next generation anyway. So cool your jets.

I know. It's just this happens every time I buy a console I've been saving to purchase for years. I hear about the PS4 coming out months after getting the PS3, I hear about the New 3DS XL right after getting the original model, and just now with the Wii U and the NX. It's very stupid thing to get annoyed with, but I can't help it.

To be fair, PS4/XBO have only just began, so it's difficult to say that just yet I feel. I remember Iwata saying they'll carry on supporting the Wii u till they think it's done. After Starfox, Splatoon and Zelda, I think that will probably be it.

  • It's rare Sony or MS do that so I guess it was bad luck for you, but it's to be expected with Nintendo. Especially with their handhelds.

  • Don't forget that they have new IPs in development. Also, they hinted at a new metroid.

  • Nintendo will never be where they were early nineties, they pretty much gave the market to Sony. When Nintendo seems hell bent on releasing shovelware titles, over and over again.

Only thing Nintendo has is handhelds, and their business practices are so archaic, they need to realize its 2015, not 1985.

Every console they make has to be some sort of GIMMICK.

They need to make something strong , easy to program on, to encourage 3rd party developers to develop games for it. I don't see this ever happening. Nintendo is pretty much dead as a game company.

  • The only Wii U games I own are Smash 4 and Pikmin 3. They need to make more games for the Wii U instead of wasting time making so many good games on handhelds.

Except Nintendo's first party games are widely regarded as the best games of all time, each installment tries completely new things and it's almost like a completely new IP. You DO know they have a bunch of new IPs in development, right?

Better than playing the same games over and over again.

  • How exactly are they shovelware titles?

Well there are more great Wii U games that are already available, like Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Wind Waker HD, Nintendo Land, Zombi U etc, and there are more coming this year, like Star Fox, Zelda U, Mario Maker, Splatoon and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

  • If Nintendo made all the shovelware titles that got released on the Wii and DS, they'd probably already be dead.

But they didn't have anything to do with those games, and the titles that were developed by Nintendo's EAD division and its subsidiaries, were great, as were the 3rd party games that weren't some cheap and lazy port. Games like No More Heroes 1 and 2, Monster Hunter 3, Madworld, The Last Story, etc.

  • Hmmm... NX. Nintendo 10? It will be their 10th system, or maybe the X means "Cross", as in, a cross between home consoles and handhelds.

Their home console development division and their handheld development division used to be different, until they were unified some time ago (last year or in 2013, I think) and Iwata has talked about how one of Nintendo's goals is to make it easier to develop software for both types of devices, by essentialy having the same architeture and OS.

This could give some credibility to that Nintendo Fusion rumor from last year.

  • I think they talked about making two Metroid games. One for the Wii U, and one for the 3DS.

    Gary-Oak posted: »

Wii U, they already confirmed this.

  • It would be awesome if they put 3ds/ds/game boy quality adventure games on cell phones. Not just the Cheesy mini games that are out on the market now (candy crush, etc).

  • They just released the New Nintendo 3DS and now there's the Nintendo NX? I haven't been keeping up with Nintendo so my money is going to remain tucked in my wallet.

  • By the time the NX is done, it will be time for the next generation anyway.

  • What ever happened to Quality of Service. Whatever happened to the integrity of the Nintendo brand. LOL Right. I remember growing up buying nintendo, they had a quality seal on every game they sold.

They put anything on the WI. Nintendo screwed up when they made a garbage system in the early 2000s called the N64. At that point Sony and even Microsoft were growing in strength. Now In America, nintendo is done for the majority of gamers. Third party developers won't even touch nintendo. You should read some interviews of what people really think of Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft have a really good Quality of Service. No bad games slip through them. Which is why there aren't any terrible games like Vampire Rain or Ride to Hell Retribution, or buggy and unfinished games like Assassin's Creed Unity, or Battlefield 4, and they don't allow devs to downgrade their games, like with Watch Dogs and Far Cry 3.

And this already happened on Nintendo consoles back in the 80s and 90s, with shovelware made by LJN.

Gotta love how the N64, the most powerfui console of that generation, is garbage, in spite of games like Majora's Maskk, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Star Fox 64, Donkey Kong 64, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini, and several other 1st and 3rd party titles.

The only problem with the N64 was using cartridges, which led to it loosing Final Fantasy, and other RPGs from Square.
This problem was due to Nintendo's former, now deceased, President, Hiroshi Yamauchi, the grandson of the man who founded Nintendo in 1889.

Yamauchi thought that cartridges, along with those discs that the Gamecube used, would help prevent piracy, and it would make sure that only quality games got released on their consoles, but it didn't really help them at all, and all it did was alienate 3rd parties. Now Iwata is left to clean up that mess.

So? Sure, Nintendo should have been more rigorous with its quality control during that generation, but they weren't involved, in any way, with development or production of any of the shovelware titles on the Wii and DS, which is what you were implyiing with "Nintendo seems hell bent on releasing shovelware titles, over and over again".

The reason why so many crappy developers got on the Wii train, was because of its sales in the first years. If the PS3 or 360's initial sales had been better than the Wii, then they would be probably be full of some crappy shovelware titles as well..

  • Well, the kinda have too. The 3DS is pretty sucessful with millions of models sold . Of course they would want to make great games on the 3DS since a lot of more people own a 3DS than a Wii U.

Be that as it may I've been seeing people quit Nintendo because of their pace of creating a new console where new games are only playable on them every 2 or 3 years.
