Some would consider me uneducated as I'm not going to uni. So ,I decided to ask you people what exactly you think being "educated" and "uneducated" means ?.

This has no definite answer, I guess it could be a demonstrated ability to listen carefully, to think critically, to evaluate facts rigorously, to reason analytically, to imagine creatively, to articulate interesting questions, to explore alternative viewpoints, to maintain intellectual curiosity and to speak and write persuasively. If we add to that a reasonable familiarity with the treasures of history, literature, theater, music, dance and art that previous civilizations have delivered, we are getting to close to the meaning of educated.

You certainly can be educated without going to uni or even to school, considering they're only tools that help you achieve the above faster than you would on your own. You could learn everything you would at school and uni from books and people, without being officially registered into an educational institution.

  • what he said. One of the smartest people i know has dyslexia, he struggles with his spelling/grammar, and gets judged for it constantly.

  • It has to be asked in relation to something. For example, if you haven't gone to school, but you're doing black-market surgeries on the street (way cheaper than those hospitals!), then you're uneducated. However, if you have a lot of life experience doing something, then you're educated, even if it isn't a formal education.

  • Wouldn't the guy doing black market surgeries have a lot of life experience doing something?

  • That's why I said it has to be in relation to something. You can't be "educated" or "uneducated", end of story. Just like you can't be "ready" or "not ready" when I haven't told you what you have to be ready for yet. Ready?

  • I think they're widely applicable, yet not very defined terms. I mostly see uneducated used as a derogatory remark, and educated used as a compliment or positive critique of a person.

I don't think a person needs higher education to be educated.
