What do you think about this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM2J7nOp3nU
This was from an organisation called Beyond Blue, a group that provides support and help to people struggling with depression. The ad is a few years old, but I figured it would be worth discussing.
The ad shows a teenager being bullied by peers at school, looked down upon by his parents and even almost had his left hand crushed, with little support from others. It's purpose is to show how dumb, cruel and unfair it is to make fun of people simply for being different.
So the question is, do you guys think this is a good way to discourage discrimination? I think it is, because it makes more fortunate individuals think about how they would like to be treated because they weren't in the majority. What do you guys think?

I've never seen someone being bullied for being left-handed, but I guess that this is what this ad is trying to say. Just like it's so fucking stupid to bully someone for being left-handed, it is stupid to bully someone who's gay, or whatever.
I'm left-handed, and I think that this ad would apply better for people like me, because it makes me think what would it be like if I were bullied for something I take for granted. I've never been bullied for something so stupid, though.
I was bullied, but I was never bullied for being left handed. That just seems silly, dumb, and unnecessary.
Seriously, do people even really get bullied for being left-handed? It's not that big a deal.
The message in the video is that it's not okay to bully people because they're different. Like you said, it's silly to bully people for being left-handed (although decades ago it was believed that being left-handed meant there was something wrong with you), and then it compares that to bullying someone for being gay, which is equally illogical and stupid.
I get bullied for my neat handwriting, tall frame and proficiency in English and German.
The stupidity of a bully is under no limit and thus the things they can prioritise on can be equally, if not more, stupid.
WHAT?! I seriously do not get the mind of a bully.
That's not what the video is talking about. It's comparing homophobic bullying (which is stupid) to being bullied because you're left-handed (equally stupid). Thing is, a long time ago a lot of people did think that there was something wrong with left-handed people. It might have only been in Australia, but I know there were rules in Australian schools decades ago against writing with your left hand.
The word "sinister" derives from the Latin for "left."
I agree with the message, but I don't think this ad is persuasive. Homophobes don't buy into gays just being that way. They think it's a chosen perversion. If you want to convince them, you have to tackle that concept more directly than this video does. And yes, I know it tries, but it's not very convincing to someone who believes otherwise.
Oh, I'm also solidly right-handed, but I use my left hand for drinks, too.
That's the exact point of the video, they're trying to show you how fucking stupid it is to bully something for something like being left-handed (which never happens) - and by that explaining that it's the same with things like bullying gay or retarded people.
The video is saying that its obvious we shouldnt judge someone for being left handed, so why should we jdge them for being gay/black/female/disabled etc.
Bullying is stupid. However one line in this made me laugh, "Don't worry what people think, just be yourself". Now this is a great line and this is true with verbal bullying but the scene before this had some people try and break his hand. You can't just ignore that.
Its a known fact left handed people are smarter than right handed people,
They just jelli.
LEFTIES UNITE.
Technically i am ambidextrous, but that was only through years of training, being forced not to be allowed to use my left hand.
When i was a kid i would get hit by the nuns at school if i tried to use my left hand. I still have scars on two of my fingers. The problem was, when i would write, it would smudge what i would write, causing it to be "unreadable."
I'm left handed and I don't get bullied for it. If people notice I'm left handed they ask me if I am, because they're blind. I don't see why it matters what hand you use #_#
Well no offense, but I have never heard of someone being bullied about be left handed
Bullies just look for something that's a little different, then pick it out, bold it out and make a huge mess out of something that has no significance. They probably didn't find anything, so they picked on the kid who wrote neatly. Like Tyrion Lannister said, if you are proud of who you are and wear it like armor, no one will be able to use it against you.
There was a rule against writing with your left hand and many more things we see as trivial now.
It was not pleasant being caught by your teacher/nun in a catholic shool writing with your left hand, my grandmother can atest to that.
The only time I ever heard someone being admonished for being left-handed was by a substitute teacher in first grade to one of my classmates, saying that it's a sign of the devil. She was elderly and pretty old-fashioned, and I still don't know if she meant it as a joke. This was from a public school, and nothing came of it though I'm sure it would cause a stir nowadays.
I've considered learning to use my right hand more, since it's been a pain in the ass using my left so much. When I played soccer it was difficult to kick with my right, and during archery practice I had to swap around with other lefties since there was only one bow designed for left-handed people. My dad used to play football (our version) when he was a teenager, and he told me that even though he was right-footed, he learnt to kick with his left foot to the point where it was his better foot to kick with.
It was actually believed to be a sign of the devil in some catholic schools during a certain period of time. True story.
Lesson to learn: Religion should stay out of education.
This was several decades ago keep in mind.
In world war 2 when my country (maybe in others too) was occupated by the soviets, being left handed was strictly forbidden. If they saw you in school using your left hand they would just smack your hand or punish you and make you learn to use your right hand. Yet my dad is still left handed so I don't know how he got through.
I know, but it's still best for them to remain separate.
Touche.
It was across the Soviet Union, its occupied countries, the United States and the British Empire/Commonwealth that this rule was applied (Pretty much everywhere but none-christian Africa and Asia).
My Grandmother is left handed and she says that she simply wrote with her left hand when the teacher/nun was not looking.
If you do not mind telling me, what country is it you speak of?
Lithuania. Occupied by Russia 2 times (I think). Attacked by Russia tons of times. After WW2 they had the audacity to roll up in tanks to our country and tried to take over our TV tower. 13 people lost their lives to drive them off. People just made a wall with their own bodies and the Russians drove through a few people
but after seeing what they done drove away (At least that's the story). It only happened somewhere in the 90's. As you can see we don't have the best history with Russia. Course now they could just nuke us and were dead. Just so it happens I live in the first city that would be nuked if they decided they're bored of us
Who in the hell bullies people for using a pencil in the other hand? lmao
Lithuania, ah yes.
The Soviet Union had it in for much of eastern Europe.
It matters to some people because of religion, the muslim faith vilifies anyone that uses their left hand as a sign of being from the "devil."
And yet the greek word for 'better' is the same as its word for 'left'..hm.
Sorry for being off topic but I love your Gravatar.
GOTTA GET A GRIP
Lol wut?
People discriminating others for being left handed is a thing? This ad can't be serious about that right? Why would they choose something so minor as an example? They could have used homosexuality as one. Is it saying, no matter how different you are, you shouldn't be discriminated for it? If that's the reason, I guess I understand it.
I mean, I'm left handed, and I don't get shit for being that way. People's reactions 100% of the time are: "omg you're left handed I didn't know!" It's funny because after all these years in school, they never realized it until now. I know in some cultures using your left hand for things such as shaking hands is offensive. I forgot the reason why, but I remember reading that. It might be used as a good way to deter people from discriminating others for being different, but it most likely won't be enough if it's in their culture. People will always hold on to that no matter what.
The point was to compare homosexuality and left-handedness as both being incredibly stupid things to discriminate for. It's meant to get people to feel sorry to people who are discriminated against, no matter who they are.
Oh I see. Ok, I understand what the video is trying to say now. Thx.

Just over a left hand
I felt the ad was silly using that issue it should of been a issue everyone can relate to I know no one who gets criticism over being left handed so the concept confused me
I'd show before and after
Of real victims of depression and other issues their struggles how hard it was how impossible it all seemed in a dark manner mini stories
then after an injection of bright colours when they say how great there life is now that they fought through and beat that challenge
You could have a range of different issues for the mini stories with different people they will also speak with passionate and can relate to the issue and end with an uplifting quote to each
From having dyslexia I do know that feel even a teacher picked up my copy held it up in the air and said look how messy his writing is i front of the whole class, but my fellow students actually felt bad for me and said she was wrong
