Favorite writings?

edited April 2015 in General Chat

Since today is the 23rd of April, where I live we have a grand celebration for the Day of the Book. Why do we celebrate it? Basically because 3 well-known authors died on the same date (but not on the same day): Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. There's even a saint for today, Saint Jorge. How do we celebrate it? Males give roses to females and females give books to males.

So, which are your favorite writings (books, novels, plays, etc.)?

Mine are:

  1. No Word from Gurb (Sin Noticias de Gurb) by Eduardo Mendoza
  2. Sakamura, Corrales and the smiling dead (Sakamura, Corrales y los muertos rientes) by Pablo Tusset
  3. World War Z by Max Brooks
  4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
  5. The Walking Dead Comics by Robert Kirkman

By the way, were I live, they do competitions in writing short stories and, without bragging, this year is the third year I won in the writing competition in English. Did you win in any writing competitions?

  • Why do you still keep promoting that thread of yours?

    Because it's a...

    massive project in school and I need your help

    But, okay, if you don't want me to promote it, I won't.

  • Do whatever you wish, I was simply wondering why you were still doing that.

  • Hmmm.

    -- All's Quiet On The Western Front
    -- To Kill A Mockingbird
    -- A Modest Proposal

    As for writing contests, I've won a couple. I won a $750 scholarship off a motivational piece and an award for a piece of satire.

  • World War Z and Fallen Angels are some favorite books of mine. Also the Republic Commando novels by Karen Traviss and the Wraith Squadron books by Aaron Allston from Star Wars (I'm a huuuuuuuge Star Wars nerd).

    As for writing contests, I just recently won a small one on Steam. The prize was a free copy of GTA V.

  • That's amazing, you must be pretty talented.

  • Who hold those writing competitions, and how am I to enter one if I wanted? I'm curious, and it seems fun :P

  • Nice. When it comes to writing, I usually read poetry and short stories so I don't have a lot of novels (or novellas) I would champion.

    I'm currently enjoying Staples's and Vaughn's Saga comics and intrigued by Sex Criminals.

    As far as books are concerned, John Steinback's Tortilla Flat is highly ridiculous and humorous.

    Can this be how dating works? Except give me a book too pls kthxbye

    • World War Z (Max Brooks)
    • Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin)
    • Alex Rider (Anthony Horowitz)
    • War Horse (Michael Morpurgo)

    I also recall enjoying a handful of Roald Dahl's writings when I was younger.

  • I think hands down the best book I've ever read was To Kill A Mockingbird. That court room scene was perfect.

    I read some World War Z excerpts from the Zombie Survival Guide, which in itself pretty good.

  • A pretty awesome dude I met a month or two back named Bill the Gifter.

    That's his group where he runs the writing contests from. I'm not too sure about the frequency of his contests, but there's one happening right now that ends April 30.

  • All the books from A Song if Ice and Fire, Fight Club... uh... yeah, I don't read much. When I was in grade school our teacher made everyone write a letter into a newspaper, and they put my letter in. I believe it was about my dislike of the home shopping network and my sister's obsession with it.

  • Wow, that's amazing! Thank you so much, I'll look into it :D

  • I read World War Z today, and I realized how much it makes the movie look like shit.

  • Perks of Being a Wallflower

  • Hmm, I don't have a favourite genre, however I enjoy and value a lot of books.

    • "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky, J. Steinbeck's "The Winter of Our Discontent", "The Trial" by Franz Kafka;

    • Agatha Christie and some Scandinavian crime fiction;

    • McCarthy's "The Road", "Earth Abides" by G.R Stewart and many other apocaliptic novels;

    • I like reading through Norse, Slavic and Greek Mythology;

    • shitload of fantasy, for example A Song of Ice and Fire and The Witcher Series;

    • couple other stuff that don't have an english translation.

    I've won a writing competition when I was in high school. And I pretty much wasted the money on stuff and thangs.

    • Walking Dead comics

    • The Hobbit

    • Game of Thrones

    • Jude the Obscure

    • The Time Machine

  • I really like Discworld.

  • Really loving Game of Thrones right now. Only a little bit into the first book, but I'm already enjoying it.

  • Tuesdays With Morrie - It made me question the world around me, other people and most importantly myself, it made me think at the end of each day if this was my last day would it be one where I truly lived? It made me re-evaluate my life, what I knew, what I was thought and made me a more insightful person :)
