Anime: subbed or dubbed?

Do you perfer your anime with subtitles or do you prefer it to be dubbed?

  • I prefer anime with subs, I can't stand most English voice actors - too cringey.

  • Both. Sometimes the English voice acting is amazing, and better than the sub version. Sometimes it's also the other way around.

I do both if I ever watch, I just kind of do it randomly.

  • Beck's dub is SO GOOD compared to the original.

  • Subbed, but I love certain dubs (Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Fruits Basket).

    I prefer both.

Dubbed isn't as bad as people say it is, I think cringey voiceacting actually increases and anime's charm.

Dubbed. I prefer not listening to what basically sounds like gibberish to me.(no offense to any Japanese speakers here. I just don't like listening to things I don't understand.)

  • Subbed, I like to actually see the animation instead of focusing on words 1/3 of the time.

There was a time when I really preferred dubs depending on studio (Funimation and ADV productions usually had pretty great acting), but as I've gotten older I tend to lean towards subtitled shows, mainly because I really appreciate how pretty the Japanese language is.

If every dub were as good as Cowboy Bebop's there'd be no contest.

  • On a totally unrelated note has anyone heard of the anime: assassination classroom?

That's the latest 'crazy anime deathmurder drama about a bunch of teens forced to kill each other', yes?

  • Both, it all depends on the anime you're watching. In some rare cases, like DBZ, the dub voices can actually be a step up. If the voices are good and not terrible you could go either way depending on which ones you like more. While it's rarer to find a dub better than the original voices, sometimes the subtitles can distract from what is going on in the moment depending on what kind of show it is.

That being said I don't really watch anime. XD

  • I recently watched Cowbow Bebop with dub and when I watched a few scenes with sub, I instantly prefer dub better.

Also, I think dub allow us to appreciate the animation better.

  • I don't watch much anime, but I usually watch it dubbed. Partly so I can have it on as background, but also because it's a cartoon, you don't get the awkward mouth-sync fail like you do with live action. Live action movies, I'll watch subs almost exclusively.

Actually, I've really been meaning to get into Ego Proxy, but only having subs has been a problem, as I don't have the time to sit and pay attention to it.

I can't come up of one instance when the dubbed anime was shit (save Death Note, the dubbed VAs were amazing, but I still believe the Japanese VAs were better).

Then again, I didn't watch too many animes. I can only speak of those I've seen.

  • Subbed.

  • This just in from the White House :O

  • I prefer my hentai muted.

  • Depends which anime. You cannot apply the sub dub argument to every anime equally.

  • Close, you were correct about everything except the students killing each other. The students have to kill their teacher ( who is an alien that can travel at speeds of mach 20 ) before the end of the year when he will destroy the Earth. That's the basic gist of it, watch the show to answer your questions.

  • I wouldn't recommend watching dubbed anime for anyone. It's just not good. I know it might be difficult in the beginning to get used to the japanese language but original VA-s are so much better. Subs all the way!
