Metal / Rock Thread
Tl;dr: Read the thread title you lazy bastard.
I saw that there was a "Rap / Hip Hop Thread," and I felt underrepresented. I was going to make a Change.org petition in order to have the thread locked, but then I decided to just make my own thread instead.
Jokes aside, this will be the thread for all things Metal and Rock. Discuss concerts, album releases, whatever.
To help get the discussion started I'll now ask you more questions than you probably feel like answering, don't think you have to answer them if you don't want to lol. What are your top 5 favorite bands, top 10 if you can think of that many? What's your favorite album? Favorite song? Favorite singer, guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, etc? Have you ever been to a concert, and if so, whose concert was it? What bands do you think are over or underrated?
Favorite bands:
- Iron Maiden
- Bruce Dickinson
- Grave Digger
- Rebellion
- Nightwish
- Motorhead
- Sabaton
- Pantera
- Alice in Chains
- Megadeth
Runners up include Metallica, Queensryche, Godsmack, Down, Alice Cooper, System of a Down, Living Colour, CCR, and more that I don't feel like naming.
As for favorite musicians, I won't include anyone from Iron Maiden because otherwise the list would only include them.
- Album - Bruce Dickinson's "The Chemical Wedding."
- Song - Iron Maiden's "The Legacy."
- Singer - Floor Jansen, previously of After Forever, currently in Nightwish.
- Guitarist - Uwe Lulis, a former member of Grave Digger and founding member of Rebellion.
- Bassist - Marco Hietala of Nightwish, great bass playing and great backup vocals; Jason Newsted is a close second for the same reasons.
- Drummer - Mikkey Dee from Motorhead.
- Keyboardist - Tuomas Holopainen, founder and songwriter of Nightwish.
I've currently been to two concerts. I saw Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper in 2012, and earlier this year I saw Nightwish, Sabaton, and Delain. In August I'll be seeing Down, Mountain of Wizard, and Child Bite. I have no idea who the last two bands are, I'm really just going to see Down. Next year my friends and I will be seeing Nightwish and Delain again, and I don't know who the third band will be, assuming there will be one. While making this thread I learned that Grave Digger and Blind Guardian are coming to the US, so I'll definitely be going to that one as well.
I think two of the most overrated bands of all time are Led Zeppelin and Queen. I think Grave Digger is underrated, because they've been around for years producing good music but I don't know too many people that have heard of them.
Comments
Some of my favorites bands/artists are System of a Down, Rob Zombie, Nightwish, Rammstein and Lordi. Honorable mentions go to Green Day, Korn and Disturbed. I don't listen to a lot of old school stuff or death metal.
My favorite song is probably "Dragula" by Rob Zombie. I don't have any specifics when it comes to albums, singers and musicians.
Haven't been to any concerts, sadly. I hope to attend at least one before I die.
I personally feel that Metallica is overrated, while Lordi and Dir En Grey are underrated.
I don't like death metal either.
The song Dragula is a good one, probably Rob Zombie's best in my opinion.
Concert tickets usually aren't outlandishly priced, especially for standing room tickets. Tickets to Nightwish were $35, and will be for the next show. Tickets for the Down show and the Grave Digger show are both $25. With that in mind, bands are around all the time, so I'm sure you'll get your shot.
My main problem with concerts is that I don't know anyone else who's into metal, and there's no way my parents would be okay with me going alone. So yeah, I'm not so optimistic.
I'm not a huge AC/DC fan, but I prefer their songs with Bon Scott.

Oh shit, lookie what we have here! An imposter!
Great thread though in all seriousness, I'm quite the fan of hip hop, but nothing comforts me like the sound of a bass guitar or a nice drum kit.

Decapitated is one hell of a death metal band and their new lineup is actually quite a powerhouse. Other than that, I'm a fan of everything from Sublime to Pig Destroyer so I have quite the range when it comes to rock and metal.
I'm gonna post this everywhere, it's awesome:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o73K3NNNJPk
Not even one person? That's crazy. Either way, things might look bleak now, but one day it won't matter if you go alone and by then you might know some more people with similar tastes in music.
Oh, so you're a big Nu-Metal fan then?
I too enjoy my share of Nu-Metal blitz. You should for sure check out Soulfly if you're into stuff like Korn or S.O.A.D. They're defiantly beast.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ul9K7VXwf4U
Their newer work is a bit more thrash / death metal, but their older material was super groove-lauded and heavy as all hell.
I'm not very open about my "real" taste in music; family members tend to judge me for it, so that's probably why. But thanks, maybe someday.
The thing about death metal for me is that I'm just not overly fond of the singing style. The instruments always sound good though.
Bass and drums are awesome. I've actually been able to find a lot of bass and drum versions of songs I like.

Underrepresented?! At least half the posts on the music thread are metal! :P
Anthrax and early Metallica are probably my favorites.
See, I've never been able to get behind some of the older thrash metal bands like Iron Maiden or Megadeth, but I love the early nineties thrash albums.
Same thing goes for death metal, there are older bands like Death or Slayer, then there are more technique death metal like Decapitated or Necrophagis, THEN we have the fucked up corner of "vile death metal" like Cannibal Corpse or Mortician. It's all about a niche I suppose.
But, for sure, the vocals of a lot of death metal isn't for everyone. Hell, even I get tired of Barnes' (Cannibal Corpse) extremely low guttural growls that after a couple tracks get really grating and annoying to me.
Judgmental family members are the worst. I personally would tell them to mind their own business/keep their opinions to themselves, but I can understand not wanting to.
It was a joke lol.
I like both bands, good selections.
Apparently I am. I don't usually pay attention to sub-genres, since the elitists are so annoying about "what is and isn't metal."
And on the subject of death metal, the only band I can say I really enjoy is Dethklok, if they even count.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbIGuLXCziU
Yeah, there's a lot of metal elitists out there unfortunately. But the genres are important from an aesthetic standpoint to differentiate them apart.
And, I can't say I enjoy Dethklok's music honestly although Metalocalypse is pretty awesome.
Well, Eddie, since you're likely to know almost every good band out there, I'm gonna bombard this thread with Russian metal bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoMX-w1rQlU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c60SjSdGTRY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i385i295svU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFVc_HLy9kU
Don't be fooled by some of them having English titles. They are as Russian as a bear with balalaika and a bottle of vodka.
There are a lot of sub genres that I don't like, but I can still at least consider them metal. They're different branches of the same family tree really, and just like with real families there's always some you aren't overly fond of.
I don't know a damned thing they're saying, but I love Aria's sound.
It's not an issue of being able to understand them for me, like most people say. Lyrics are easy enough to come by. Just not a fan. I will say that when my friends and I used to play Rock Band and Guitar Hero and my friend would be acing the vocals on some of those songs it was a great time, very funny to hear.

I want to take everyone on a little history trip back to 1981 when Why? was released by a little unknown band called Discharge. for everyone wondering where thrash originates from, Discharge is one of the leading examples of it's birth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=rFqqHYaX3Zo
This still remains one of my personal favorite albums of all time, period.
The song sounds further on the punk end of the spectrum, though I do like it well enough.
You brought it up so I found this. I had watched it a while ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAFGIsIkwWA
They're specifically classified as "Thrash-punk." But it wasn't known as that back when it was released, and a big portion of thrash artists such as Sepultura and Pantera credit Discharge as being a big motivation for their music.
Now, their second album is much more clear-cut thrash metal than their more hardcore punk sounding album Why.
Top 10 Favorite Bands:
HM: AC/DC, Pantera, Billy Joel (again, not hard rock, but a classic), Motorhead, Sabaton
Favorite Album: Metallica's Master of Puppets. (R.I.P. Cliff Burton)
Favorite singer: Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden
Favorite Guitarist: Dave Mustaine of Megadeth
Favorite Bassist: Cliff Burton, formerly of Metallica
Favorite Drummer: Dave Lombardo, formerly of Slayer
I've been to a total of 4 concerts
I really wanted to go to The Big 4 show that was at Yankee Stadium in 2011, but it had to be a school night.
Like the list, and it's really cool you've gotten to see Metallica play some iconic songs I was actually going to go to that show in Atlantic City but something came up, I can't remember what right now.
I saw Iron Maiden with Alice Cooper at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden NJ. I saw Nightwish, Sabaton, and Delain at the Electric Factory in Philly. I'll be seeing Down at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ, and then Nightwish will be there in February. Grave Digger and Blind Guardian will be at Union Transfer in Philly.
Edit: I found some goo pics from the Maiden/Cooper show. It was like 104 degrees that day.

We are very happy to announce that following his recent MRI Scan, Bruce was today officially given the all-clear by his specialists.
Bruce says,
“I would like to thank the fantastic medical team who have been treating me for the last few months, resulting in this amazing outcome. It’s been tough on my family and in many ways it was harder for them than me. I’d also like to send a heartfelt thanks to all our fans for their kind words and thoughts. I’m a firm believer in trying to maintain a positive attitude, and the encouragement from the global Maiden family meant a great deal to me. Right now, I’m feeling extremely motivated and can’t wait to get back to business as usual, as soon as I can!”
Rod Smallwood continues,
“We are of course all absolutely delighted that Bruce’s doctors have pronounced him free of cancer. Although Bruce is naturally eager to resume Maiden activities, it will take a while before he is completely back to full strength, as we explained previously. Because of this, the band will not be touring or playing any shows until next year. We know our fans will understand the situation and, like us, would prefer to wait until Bruce is back to his usual indefatigable levels of fitness before going out on the road.
For now, the focus will be on putting the finishing touches to the new Iron Maiden studio album and that is what we will be concentrating on over the coming weeks. The release however will definitely be this year. Meanwhile, I’d like to echo Bruce’s words and thank all Maiden fans. You have been incredibly patient, putting Bruce’s health and well-being first during this difficult time and the band and I appreciate all your positive support.”

My favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold, followed by Slipknot and a local Israeli hard rock band with a female and male lead singers (a married couple), both have a very powerful voice - especially the woman. Then there's Metallica and Tenacious D (I love Jack Black's singing).
Favorite Albums would be Nightmare and Hail to the King (I can't decide) and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), my favorite song is Vermillion (can't decide which part, probably 1), and my favorite singer is Matthew Sanders.
I actually just came back from a concert of that Israeli band I was speaking of, called Hayehudim (translates to The Jews, lmao). It was an amazing performance, 2 and a half hours.
Queen is really fucking overrated imo, and I think Avenged Sevenfold is a little underrated in its genre.
My favorite female singer is Floor Jansen, as stated in my OP. Would you mind posting a song from The Jews (lol)?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSm4l6yifG0
Just call them Hayehudim, it doesn't sound as weird :P They're all in Hebrew, but eh... whatever.
Here's one with the male singer:

Here's one with both (starts off slow, but gets better):

I don't care if it's in a language I can't understand. I can still enjoy the music and look the lyrics up. I'll check them out when I get a chance, thanks.
That's awesome, hopefully Maiden will tour the US soon, I would love to see them in concert.
A concert in our home state that we both missed.

Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Avenged Sevenfold, Black Sabbath, Iced Earth, Volbeat, Queensryche, Metallica, Guns n' Roses.
I have many, but I think the one that will simply always have the same exact hold on my emotions would be have to be Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche.
I'll do a top five, because that's just not fair. :P
Time- Pink Floyd. (Just a universal as fuck song and one of the greatest guitar solos ever for pure emotion behind every single note)
The Trooper- Iron Maiden. (There are songs I like better and that I think are objectively better, like Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Phantom of the Opera, but this is the song that got me into Iron Maiden and got me into metal in general. It holds a special place for me... plus, it's a badass song anyway)
Suite Sister Mary- Queensryche (The capstone and climax of Operation:Mindcrime. There is not a single solitary second of this song that isn't essential. On its own, it's fucking brilliant, but it holds even more power knowing the story of the album and the tragic, depressing events that follow its defiant theme and ending)
Heaven and Hell- Black Sabbath (Ronnie James Dio was a gem)
Spring- Rammstein/Donaukinder- Rammstein (Just two excellent and very under-appreciated songs from Rammstein, especially Spring)
The most recent concert I went to was Blaze Bayley's group "The Foundry" here in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Tiny venue, which is pretty depressing all things considered, but it meant I got to literally be right in front of him and the group put on a fantastic show. Being a big fan of Blaze since I was a teen and never thinking I'd ever speak to him, that and meeting him afterwards was a pretty surreal experience.
Saw Iron Maiden twice during their Somewhere Back in Time and Maiden England tours. Rime of the Ancient Mariner live was one of the best things ever, especially for my dad, who hadn't seen that since their original Powerslave tour.
Top 5 favorite rock bands of all time:. Man I'm gonna be honest I don't know if I can even name 5 lol. I just don't listen to too many bands. Hmm I like:
Hollywood Undead
Black Veil Brides
Avery Watts
Skillet
Nirvana
Favorite Album: Any of Hollywood Undead's albums really lol, but I guess to be specific their first album Swan Songs since it is how I got introduced to their music.
Favorite Song(s):
Undead by Hollywood Undead
How We Roll by Hollywood Undead
In Bloom by Nirvana
A Cut Above by Avery Watts
In The End by Black Veil Brides
Favorite Singer: Charlie Scene of Hollywood Undead
Favorite Guitarist: Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (R.I.P)
Favorite Drummer: Jen Ledger of Skillet
They should really play it live more often, it's such an awesome live song and this performance is fucking fantastic.
Another Queensryche fan, nice. They haven't gotten much love yet. Operation: Mindcrime is definitely a masterpiece of an album.
I'm not a fan of Rammstein or Pink Floyd, but I like the rest of this list."The Trooper" is one of their most iconic songs even if others are objectively better as you said, so it makes sense. The first Maiden song I ever heard was "Alexander the Great," and to this day I can never decide if that or "The Legacy" is my favorite. I personally prefer Sabbath with Dio.
Blaze never gets any love for his time in Maiden, but he kept the torch lit. It's cool that you're a fan of his, and it's good that he's still around. He certainly wasn't as bad as people make him out to be.
I'm so jealous. I want to hear that song live so bad. I think I may have missed my only chance by not being able to attend the Somewhere Back in Time Tour. They didn't play it during the Maiden England tour.
I wish they would, it's such a good song, and it's so awesome live. I hope we didn't miss our only chance to see it.
Their new album will be out sometime this year, and 2016 will probably see them touring again. I hope they do more US shows in our area than with Maiden England. If they came around once a year I'd go every time, but they haven't been around since 2012.
