Anyone else not happy with Bloody Mary in the comic
Okay, first off I adore and still adore Bloody Mary, she is my favourite character from The wolf among us video game. I was extremely looking forward to seeing her in a comic, seeing how they would portray her, what lines would be changed and what lines would be kept.
Of course this did have me worry a bit, I love seeing fanart of Mary because it's cool to see her in different art styles. But the thing that kept me worried what that they would pull a "Carmelita Fox" on me.
What do I mean when I say "Pull a Carmelita fox"? Allow me to explain.
Carmelita Fox is a video game character from "Sly Cooper". A game series that mainly revolves around a thieving raccoon named, well you guessed it Sly Cooper. Carmelita Fox is well, a Fox and plays a large role in the series as a cop and Sly's love interest. Throughout the first three games she dawned a pair of pants and boots, although she was already deemed "sexy" and "attractive" given that her top was strapless and showed off her stomach, she still had a somewhat realistic body as far as video game cartoon standards go. Now when the fourth game came out it was created by a new company who gave her a complete makeover that bugged me. The had her wear a mini skirt, a shorter top, high heel boots, and what annoyed me the most what her body. They made her dramatically thin to the point where I swear I could see her rib cage.
Now that I seen bits and Pieces of Bloody Mary in The wolf among us comic I lost all my hype I had for the comic.
Take a look at Bloody Mary in her true form in the game

Notice she has narrow hips, most likely an A or B cup?
Now let's compare that to the upcoming comic cover, please note this is not my Tumblr blog, my blog is elsewhere.

I am really disgusted with this, one of the reasons I adore Bloody Mary was that she was a kickass female villain who wasn't sexualized, didn't use flirting as a way to do her job, wasn't clad in some leather bondage bikini getup. I loved how cruel and ruthless she was just for the sake of it. Sadly the comic let me down, Bloody Mary is meant to be a terrifying, cruel, ruthless, lanky and small chested killer. The whole "sexy demon fan service" just isn't sitting right with me.
Not to mention in her glamour/human form in the comic I get the feeling they were just like "short hair, got it." Since she had no freckles, seemed to have a lighter skin tone (This could possible be up for debate since her origin is tinted in yellow, but somehow I doubt it), and her face shape. Forgive me for not having links to her origin story, I did not like or reblog any on my tumblr.
Thankfully I saved my money and had not gone out to purchase a comic, one of the times I'm thankful for being broke.
Anyone else feeling the same way?
Comments
Women have be overly sexualised in comic books for ages. The Walking Dead is the only one I've read that hasn't done so, and the only one I give my money to.
It sucks, and it laughs in the face of those who claim that sexism doesn't exist in the western world.
Not at all, sorry. I couldnt care less about her cup size. Im enjoying reading her slow transformation the the ruthless killer we're going to see in the game. They sexied Bigby up, why not Mary, although her bigger breasts dont make her less terrifying to me.
Well for a start, the comic artists have a 'creative license' and can make some adjustments to the characters that they draw, nothing is going to be perfect compared to the video game.
Now look at characters in TWAU that are depicted in Fables. Bigby looks different ALL THE TIME in the Fables comics, I'm surprised they found a solid rendition to use in TWAU that would not only show off that Bigby has rugged looks and appears to be in his 30's, but also that he always looks on edge and 'dark'.
Snow has a varying body shape in Fables as well, sometimes she has B cups and other times she has D cups (and I'm talking way after she gives birth to the Cubs) her ass changes in shape and roundness as well. The covers of the comics are not accurate depictions of a characters body shape either!
The cover for Fables 148 depicts Rose Red and Bigby Wolf. Well they're both much slimmer than usual and Bigby looks younger. I think you just need to trust in the personality. TWAU comic uses different artists for each issue (I recall) and they aren't going to do everything the same way
No offense, but are you seriously complaining about how a demonic serial killer looks? I, personally, don't give a damn about that. Let the creators do their work, they know what they're doing.
Just because she has a bigger boob size doesn't mean she's going to be over sexualized, nor is it something valid to get upset about in my honest opinion.
Bloody Mary is a female villain that is wearing partial clothing and has a body type that isn't for sex appeal in the game, she has a large fan base and is very much adored. That is so freaking rare to find nowadays, occasionally there's the "She's a bitch" comment but that's rather rare. And just because the creators of the comic can produce comics doesn't mean I'm not allow to give criticism.
I didn't say you can't give criticism, I'm just saying that IMO it's not very reasonable.
After all, in a universe where there are girls like Snow, Nerissa, Beauty and lots of others, I don't think someone will over-sexualize BM
Did you go onto the links? They clearly altered her body type for fan service, so yeah they sexualized BM. So no other way to put it, altering a lanky small chested woman for a body type that has a larger bust and wider hips is sexualizing.
Well her chest certain didn't look as big in the games as the comic book cover.
Her chest wasn't that small imo, Beauty didn't have big curves like Mary either...
I meant the fans won't do it. The creators can draw her however they want - if the fans don't to see her sexualized, it will not happen.
Giving a lanky character with a small chest, wider hips. = sexualized.
"Draw her however you want"
There's a fine line between getting creative and erasing body types besides the "perfect" ones.
Drawing Mary in a different outfit and hairstyle is okay, but erasing diverse body types isn't.
Yes but it's a cover! The Fables comic covers RARELY mimic what is inside!!
And that makes it a valid reason to sexualized a character because
Does it really matter that much?
You know one of the issue covers for Fables Volume 3 depicts Snow as a stick thin woman, I hate that cover because Snow is not a stick thin woman. I don't think giving Mary bigger hips or a bigger bust for an issue cover is a big deal...
Yeah, it does matter in fact.
Body disversity matters a shit ton!
in gaming and comics women are oftern portrayed with one body type, the skinny with large breasts and wide hips, how oftern do we see a fat woman in gaming that isn't just for fatphobic jokes, how oftern do we see women who are muscluar that the creators don't hold back to keep her feminin, how oftern do we see characters that actually show the downside of having large breasts (Because let's face it, if Bloody Mary was going to fight with the way she was drawn on the cover and be a expected to fight like she did in Cry wolf, her chest would hurt like hell) , Where are the women with body hair? Women with Stretch marks? Women with uneven size breasts? Lanky women? Where are the women with port wine stains? Scars? Fat rolls? Muffin tops? Breasts that actually fallow physics?
The answers.... Surprise, surprise, RARELY!
So yeah it matters.
Umm I don't think you understand what I meant to say. I meant that if fans WON'T see it as a sexualized Mary, it won't be one. It all depends on a perspective. If you're going to see BM sexualized, you're going to see her like that. If you don't want that, you won't. Simple as that.
For example, I don't see her sexualized at all. Changed body form, hip size, breasts - I don't care. All I see is a scary demonic assassin, which is what she is.
I agree, certainly nothing to quit the comic over.
You only read The Walking Dead?
i don't think they gave her bigger boobs, they just gave her hips and a bit of extra weight (not in a fat way, in a healthier way) maybe that might slightly give a visually different perception, but calling these small changes overly sexualied is abserd to the point of nit picking where no matter how it was done it would never be right.
That's even worse sorta, because it's using sex appeal to sell.
[removed]
How is using sex appeal to sell bad? If something has an attractive cover, the customer is usually going to be more inclined to buy it, and at the end of the day that's what a business wants, to sell.
When did sex become bad?
Sex isn't bad, I'm very sex positive and against sex shaming (I prefer that over slut shaming).
I'm just sick of women having to be over sexualized so some company can make money.
Do you really think people are reading this comic, just because it has 'over-sexualized' women in it?
Game of Thrones has over-sexualized women in it, but we watch it for the story and the huge cast of characters, just like Fables. The over-sexualization is just content!
I'm not sure if the cover artist for this one is the same for the regular comic. Might explain a few things if they arent.
Ill just play devil's advocate for a sec and say this. Fables, human men or women mind, are supposed to look handsome/pretty. So for Mary to look "hot" in a messed up kinda way makes sense.
I get where you are coming from though and I believe for a industry that's been around for 80 or so years you would think it would learn.
Ok first off I'm a women, judging by the fact you have man in your username and on your profile you call address yourself as guy it's safe to say you aren't.
You have no right tell me what is sexualizing women and what isn't.
Sexualizing women and body shaming them sells, doesn't that sound fucked up to you?
I'm a woman, and I'm so damn tired of all those women who see discriminantion and sexual objectification everywhere. Do you really feel he need of arguing on some comic book charactets' breast size? Are you really so insecure you can't accept that a fictional character is drew as a idealized beauty? And tell me, isn't Bigby, in the videogame, portraied much younger and defeanetly more attractive than in he comics? Anyway, I believe that no one could care less about Bloody Mary's phisique. Bloody Mary was admired because of her creepy personality, not becaise of her small boobs. Actually, the fact that you give so much importance to her look, while everyone else was just trilled with her story, makes you the one who overvalues sex and looks.
... Except they overly sexualise a ton of male characters in comics too. It has nothing to do with sexism, people will be more inclined to buy something if it has attractive men/women in it.
Actually, there were times in the comics where Bigby looked younger than in TWAU (depends on whether he shaved or not lol) and times where he did look quite rugged imo
Well... no. And yes I am a guy.
Over-sexualisation is used everywhere these days for games, comics, movies, modelling... It's normal to me
In my opinion, having bigger or smaller boobs doesn't automatically translate into someone being more or less sexy - it's all a matter of perception, and in some cases, preference. I can almost guarantee that breast/hip/butt size won't matter to the vast majority of people. It was Mary's attitude and personality which made everyone admire her in the first place NOT her figure, so I'd imagine people will love her regardless of what she looks like.
Okay, first off the majority of you clearly have no idea what body shaming, sexualizing is, or how important body diversity is. And the fact you guys are defending sexualization gross...
Few links to explain why body diversity matter

( Rape is talked about on here, and yes, their really is a game that's a rape simulator)

Granted since I am on my iPod I cannot link videos but I would suggest looking up Laci Green and her videos "Bikini body", on her channel called "mtv braless"
They make men who fight very muscular, yes. Doesn't men who fight being muscular make total sense?
That's not really the same as sexualisation; men run around with way more clothes on that women, and theyy have more muscles because they're meant to be strong.
I don't see what Mary could have done to gain rounder and more prominent breasts.
And why not? Because he has a penis instead of a vagina in between his legs? Seriously that logic doesn't make any sense, your genitals don't define your ability to understand what sexualizing is and isn't.
Clearly you don't have any idea of what body shaming or sexualizing is. Any person who ever experienced such things first hand would have a good laugh reading your futil arguments. Maybe you find it difficult to separate fiction from reality, but let me tell you that, if you really are so interested in the subject of sexual discrimination, there are way less silly battles to engage in the real world, and you might actually do something helpful instead of uselessy whine.
*Arent, damn auto correct
first off the whole penis= a man or Vagina= a women is cissexist and transphobic.
A man can understand sexualizing to a woman to an extent, but he can never truly knows what it feels like.
Think of it this way, a straight person will never truly understand homophobia because they are lgbtq+, they don't know what it's like to have people saying they can fix you, your change your mind, etc, etc.
