What are the positive things about being a gamer?

edited June 2015 in General Chat

I'm sick of all the negative media around gamers some even stupid enough to think GAMES causes serial killers remember Angry birds caused the extinct of birds? neither did I

As for media this year gamers are sexist and racist blah blah blah to much to get into tbh

http://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2015/04/10/new-study-finds-no-link-between-gaming-and-sexist-attitudes/

I want to read something positive about gamers for a change

Anyway back to the point why are you a gamer? what are the positive things about being a gamer?

This made me make this thread when I saw it ^ even thinking about this last game I played Arkham Knight

Just walking through the police station I heard all the officers say to me

We believe in you Batman we know you can save this city we are all counting on you

We are here anytime you need us to help

You can do it(insert shia labeouf video)

No one here is as equipped or trained to fight this problem here but you we need you

Well done Batman we knew you could do it

etc

I won't lie hearing all this stuff walking through the police station as batman did hit me in the feels :'D

Reasons

I play games because they've got a better story than my own life does at this point.

I play games because sometimes I want to see and do things I can't see and do.

I play games because I want to experience things from perspectives other than my own.

I play games because they draw emotion out of me, be it happy or otherwise.

I play games because I get to meet fantastic characters while playing them.

I play games because I'd rather interact with my entertainment than idly watch it happen.

I play games because I have some degree of a choice of how things happen in them.

http://www.ocmodshop.com/10-benefits-of-video-games/

plus you get a great knowledge about history and other stuff I'll be honest one year I did awesome in my history test about the renaissance and that was just all AC which helped me

I seen this comment and I agree I'll do my reasons later :)

Anyway

Why do you play games? What are the positives for you?

i do that because i have fun,i play a lot of story oriented games (i still play cod and i am good at it,but it isn't as fun) and i have a lot of friends who play games so i can talk with them about news,e3.

  • You learn languages efficiently, I can say that I learned 80% of my English from video games. It also improves hand-eye coordination and it can educate you on tons of stuff. It improves your ability to make decisions (big or small) under a small time frame (especially Telltale).

  • I remember when i was a kid, we played Math Blaster.

  • I hate that picture. but there are some people that do play it for that reason so i cant really be a dick specially since there are those cases that are really bad and they need to coping of games so is so good (quick explanation why i hate that pic and its "meaning". i seen it on facebook and 9 shared by people that say "this is why we game" or something like " gamers can relate" or some shit like that. dont paint all people that like to game to be like that.)

    but i gamebecause:

    • for entertainment
    • distraction/escapism

well the entertainment can be really broken down into different subcategories and shit.

    Hand eye coordination,
    Creative thinking,
Discover new interests (a certain culture, music, languages, politics etc) and encourages you to learn more,
    logical thinking,
The escapism can be good for dealing with stress,
Despite it being bad a lot of the time, online gaming can help develop social skills,
Encourages the idea of if you work hard at something, you'll be rewarded and plenty more, but I just can't think of them all right now.

Now, if you've been inspired to work in multimedia such as films, games etc, you also have the benefits in games of studying:

Level design, colour theory, character design, animation, audio, programming, visual communication and so on.

The list of good things is pretty much endless, but like anything in life, too much of one thing can be bad for you. It's all about balance. Oh, and don't let people get you (or anyone else reading this) down about it. Some people can't help but focus on the bad things in life. That, seems to be one of the bad things about the internet.

  • haven't media pretty much shunned gaming since the dawn of times?

everytime mainstream media started covering games it was either because GTA was 2 lines from having a sex minigame in it or because someone in america killed a fuckton of people and it was obviously because of games/marilyn manson

only change i've seen in the past year is that mainstream gaming media started doing that

i play games because i've started playing games when i was a kid and am too lazy to find a new hobby, it does have positive pseudo physical repercussions (like hand eye coordination, reflexes and other genre related stuff) but that's not why i do it, i do it cus it's fun, same reason why i play DnD when work isn't being such a bitch

  • Yeah, games are an easy target for the media as a lot of people who don't play them don't understand them. This gives the media a free pass sadly to write whatever they feel like.

Now, if you don't mind, I've played a lot of Sonic and feel like jumping on people's heads...:)

  • As cheesy as it sounds, after being shit on and dealing with all the crap in your life I love the feeling of just escaping into a game where you're in control in a sense.

  • Good stories is the first thing that comes to mind since I am always on a really tight budget thus ending up just wathing a bunch of games on YT, so a good story means a lot to me, which of course goes along with good characters. And for one, being a huge horror fan being able to play a Horror RPG for example can be one the most terriffing things believe it or not, so I guess I just think that games do horror better than movies. It has also helped me meet a bunch of awesome people, many of which I view as family at this point. Now back to the games, accomplising something after many tries is an amazing feeling, the music in many games is simply amazing and let's not forget that games are a great way to actually acomplise something in your free time, despite common belief (meaning parents of course).

  • I'm the same :)

  • What are the positive things about any story?

Gaming to me is just a story I get to participate in.

Even Pac-Man. Well, OK, maybe that story is a little repetitive, but it's still a story.

  • Video games helped me develop writing skills, both professional and creative.

  • Games are and always will be my favorite thing in the world!

  • Meeting so many people is a great one. Some people will just say "There just people on the internet dude" but when I talk with people, GOOD people for not even a week, its amazing. Especially since these people are playing the same game as you, which means they have a similar interest already creates a play space in which you can all enjoy. Who knows, they might even live close to you, and BAM another real life friend that you can hang out with almost anytime. There are so many positives, but their are still negatives, but I think positives out weighs negatives here.

  • Escaping to a world where I am not me...Depending on that being a world where I can be a hero and feel special and important or...A world where I'm a bad guy or just someone else (like a soldier in a shooter) and get my anger and emotions out without looking like a sociopath or a violent person.

If you look back far enough, almost all forms of new entertainment were shunned by society. I can remember this case were the matrix was blamed for a shooting, just because two guys were wearing trenchcoats while commiting the act.
Even novels where a target when they first came around, people thought it would be major problem beeing put into someone elses perspective by a author.

Basically, I play video games to escape the real world (where I am just "one more" in the great mass of people and nothingness), to create new friendships and to be entertainment.

What's positive about video games? Well, video games increase the efficiency of target tracking and task switching, decreases the reaction time and improve visual attention. The entorhinal cortex increases with the amount of time that you play logic games and platforms, people who play "shooters" are more efficient in the collection of information and they react more quickly and, people who play video games in general, have better view (although their eyesight does not improve).

Obviously, video games have negative effects, too. Everything has a good and a bad in them.

Another benefit I forgot to mention. Music!

i was a pretty standard Pop/Alt Rock/R&B guy before I started playing video games. If I never played Fallout or Bioshock I would've never been exposed to much Swing, Doo Wop or Rockabilly music.

If I never played Skate or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, I never would've acquired a taste for Sublime, Bad Religion or Public Enemy.

I only started bumping Rakim Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill after playing San Andreas. Likewise, GTA IV and V inspired me to dive into my parents' collection of Motown, Funk and Jazz records. I even developed a grudging respect for 80's rock.

In short, video games are great for finding awesome new music and expanding your horizons in general.

  • Music is a great point I listen to crash bandicoot and tlou themes everyday :)

  • Yeah, I wish GTA had more Wu. I know GTA V is supposed to be about the West Coast flavor, but C.R.E.A.M. would've been a PERFECT fit. And I was really disappointed there was only one measly Wu (I think it was Ghostface) song in IV...and it wasn't even one of his good ones!

  • Many things. For me I've been given mass amounts of inspiration over the years, and it feels good to act like a badass/hero/villain since you can role play and really submerse yourself into the playable character and their world. And I absolutely love the music, the choreography is upbeat. I have dozens of BGM that I listen to. Not only that, but gaming formed a community and now we have forums where we can make friends we wouldn't otherwise get to meet. Without games and the internet a lot of us wouldn't even have met. For example, I wouldn't have even know the friends I have here without the gaming world and Walking Dead. My interest in games and zombies are what brought me here like many others. Gaming has changed everything around us as it evolved, influencing virtually everything. It's one piece of the puzzle board that makes the world go round.

  • yeah, i mean i still liked it though. i never played the chinatown stories but i know that Ghostface did a song for that game so i think there must have been more there. but yeah more Wu the better!

  • Lots of things.

For me, it provided an escape from life. Seeing all these amazing worlds and stories, It's something that you'd never be able to experience in real life. It also helps you forge new friendships. I met my best friend, whom I have known for over 6 years now, because of video games.

  • there's a lot of things. main ones for me though is that it boosts your imagination and helps your social skills and team work
