When people are displaced from their homeland, and/or don't have much, religion is a constant they they can rely on. The Somali kid might feel kind of isolated or lost, so it's perhaps unsurprising that he clings to Islam as something that gives him a sense of identity and belonging.
It becomes a problem when immigrants completely isolate themselves in their communities and don't integrate into their new home.
