Does a TV show or a movie ever have the opposite effect than what's intended to you?

I ask because I watched an Anime called Sound Euphonium, which is you know a typical feelgood underdog story of how a school band that's not that good rise up and win a contest, it's not like it's all happy it has it's dramatic points but it's obviously meant to be inspiring, but for me, it's kind off depressing, mostly because I can relate a lot to the protagonist, she's a cynical asshole just like me and generally she reminds me a lot of me (Pretty much everything from the way she talks and acts as to how other people see her and treat her), but just seeing her find something that she cares about and she feels really passionate for, that she's willing to do until she bleeds and then get up and do it again, well yes it's inspiring but it's also depressing because I've never felt like that for anything and it sucks, it makes me wonder if I'm even capable, probably not I'm too cynical already and I get even more cynical as time passes, which is a shame because I feel like I could do absolutely anything, no, I know I can but I don't care about anything enough to do it, instead I work on a job I hate and I barely earn enough money to pay the bills.

Anyway I'm wondering if something like that ever happened to you.

  • Happened to me. I can't recall the name of the anime (didn't finish it)but it was meant to be an entertaining and funny story of a girl who's really antisocial and doesn't have friends AT ALL. She desperately tried to befriend people in her weird and pathetic way and
well for me it was just very sad and depressing. I could relate to the anxiety and the depression thing, I'm also very empathetic so it was just downright sad for me.

  • I know which show you are talking about, it's painful to watch, I sometimes show it to my friends to torture them because that thing is pretty painful to watch, then again I binged on Arrested Development which is also so awkward it's painful so maybe I have high tolerance, it's name was "It's your fault I'm not popular" or something similar, I think it probably was longer.

I kind off get what you are talking about but that show was more cringe-worthy than funny or sad to me, still the character itself was very well written regardless of how hard it was to watch her.

well I remember my nephew when he was really young saw Spiderman and was terrified of him he wouldn't even go to the shop for ages because he said Spiderman was hiding on top of the building to kill him

this is an awesome question I'll have to come back and edit this later to add my personal answer my mind is blank rn tho for the Saw franchise I laughed way to much at the evil genius of some of the tests I found the tests concepts interesting of how they worked even tho they are mean't to scare you

  • I dunno... Beautiful? I watched it a long time ago, it's a soap opera, it's supposed to make me cry or whatever, be sad. Instead I would laugh all my way to each episode due to some ridiculous plot devices.

  • I guess the recent "evil Dead" remake was suppose to be a horror movie, but I found myself laughing most of the time.

  • That is amazing, you should show him the episode of the 90s cartoon in which Spiderman transforms into a 6 armed human Spider and loses his mind to the point that he's just a monster going on a rampage.
