Opinions Needed: Is a Wii U worth buying?

Is a Wii U worth buying? I've been playing Nintendo Games since the Nintendo 64. So I've always loved Legend of Zelda games, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Star Fox. Thankfully, all of those titles have games on the Wii U. But now with news of a new system slated for a 2016 release, I'm really torn if I should skip the Wii U or if I should spring for it and enjoy the games I've always loved. I mean, I still have my Wii from 2007, and I still play it and will always keep it. So it has massive value as far as just keeping it. Will the Wii U be the same?

Sadly as I've been growing up and having less and less time for games, I really have to love a game to want to waste my time playing it. I know it sounds bad, but I beat myself up for playing video games anymore so if I do get the Wii U I just want to know it's really worth it. I don't know if a lot of people on here have it, and I don't want the whole PS4 vs. Xbox One vs. Wii U fighting. I'm not looking for the 'best' system, just a system that will really cater to the inner gamer in me. I have such fond memories of all those games I listed above on the N64, Game Cube, and Wii. But I'm not entirely sure if I should make the jump to Wii U or just skip this particular generation of Nintendo System.

Please keep things nice, and like I said, NO CONSOLE WARS/FLAMING.

  • Can you elaborate on that opinion?

    No.

  • No, I don't think it's worth the money. So far, one of the only great game on that system is Smash Bros. Good games rarely come out on it and any games rarely come out on it.

Can you elaborate on that opinion?

  • Not really, unless you're really in love with Nintendo franchises. SSB and Splatoon are the only truly great Wii U games, in my opinion.

  • Like I said, I've been playing my Wii games for about 6-8 years now. So, I can also play Wii games on the Wii U. Combining them together on the Wii U won't require the non backwards compatible issue. And TBH I just played Splatoon tonight and it made my head hurt. It's cute and looks fun, but it's controls are really strange.

I'm struggling to skip playing Star Fox Zero, Mario Kart 8, and Hyrule Warriors and just deal with playing Super Smash Bros on the 3ds. And since I play the crap out of SSB, it's like go big or go home. I can't do SSB much honor in playing it on the 3DS IMO.

    Thank you though.

Sadly I think that all the 'good games' came out waaaaaaay to long after the system launched. I think if they had launched SSB, Mario Kart and Star Fox Zero closer to the launch of the system I would feel more justified in buying it. But buying it so long after release and on the heels of rumors of a new system, I'm having a huge crisis to make a decision.

  • What games do you play on it other than Smash Bros? Or is Smash Bros just that good it's well worth buying the system just for that?

Shit, doesn't Smash Bros have online? I COULD FIGHT OTHER PEOPLE?

  • Ah, clears it up, I was confused at first.

  • MEHHHHHH it's too hard. I am a Nintendo lover, my first gaming system was a GameBoy and then a N64. So it has a special place in my heart...

LOL yes, I'm on here more sporadically than before. But good to see you're still around. :)

  • Depends on the type of games you like, and the money you have. I have a PS4 and a Wii. I play the hell out of Nintendo franchises, so Wii is great for me. But, I get to livestream lets plays from PS4 with games like Life is Strange.

Yes it has online . And you can fight other people online. And also the DLCs are dirt cheap . Some are 0.75 cent each.

    I have :

    Child of Light

The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker HD

    Mario Bros U

    and Smash Bros

  • TBH I am a Xbox girl myself, and although there are tons of games I'd like to play on the PS4, I simply can't afford all three this year. But I can do at least the Wii U right now, and then a Xbox One in November.

And yeah, that's the thing. Nintendo game's have quite possibly the best retail value. I mean, I am still playing Mario Sunshine to this day. And Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros are all I could pick up as a kid when I needed to chill out and have a good day off. So, yes I agree Nintendo franchises are great.

But to clarify, do you have a Wii or a Wii U?

  • HNGHHH I am just having issues with justifying that at the moment. XD I mean, can you imagine skipping the Xbox One or PS4? (depending on your personal preferences). Nintendo is what I grew up with, so it hits me in the feels and makes me nostalgic. It reminds me of a simpler time in my life, just playing Nintendo games make me feel like I can still have fun.

  • I had a Wii but upgraded to a Xbox360 and then I upgraded to a PS4. I have learned to skip over a few systems despite the exclusives.

  • MMM I like Cheap DLC. :)

And I've heard of all of those. Did you give Hyrule Warriors a look? I'm interested in it.

  • Damn son, you skipped all over the place. lol Just curious, but what games do you like on the PS4? Or what games/system differences made you want a PS4 over Xbox One?

  • Yeah . Traded it a week ago . It was fun . But after finishing the main story I lost interest.

  • I thought PS4 was the nicer system, less blocky, had more games I liked.

  • Yes. There's many great games on it, and much better exclusives than on the other consoles.

  • If you're a Nintendo lover then it really depends on how much you love their games, for example Bayonetta 2, Super Smash 4, Mario Kart 8, Kirby's Epic Yarn and the upcoming Zelda game are enough to convince me, while on the other hand unlike GoldenPaladin here besides Bloodborne and The Last Guardian I can't think of a single PS4 exclusive I care about.

I'd recommend thinking through which games you want to play the most and making a decision based on that, since after all we all have different tastes.

  • Do we know when the NXT (or whatever) is suppose to come out? I guess it's worth getting if you primarily want those types of games. One thing to think about if you're a online type player is how long will the WiiU be supported. But maybe it does not matter.

  • They are already talking about their next platform. Personally, I think it's too late to jump into the Wii U. They'll be really cheap in a few years.

  • Well i was gonna buy the Wii U when i travel back to USA, but then i started reading reviews for the Wii U and it was getting a lot of hate and the Wii U does not have that much games (Nintendo is finally giving it games so thats good) and also Nintendo themselves admitted the Wii U is a failure and is working on their next platform. Then i changed my mind about getting the Wii U and gonna get a PS4 instead. When i heard Telltale games are not on the Wii U, that made me change my mind.

But if you are a nintendo fan then i do recommend the Wii U, but for me, is time for me to move on to Sony.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. This is the reason why I haven't jumped on any of the Xbox One, PS4, or Wii U systems yet because it wasn't until this years E3 that I was totally psyched to get the Xbox One and then the Wii U for all the new games coming out.

As for me, the games I know for sure I'll be playing will be Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Star Fox Zero, Bayonetta, and then I'd really like to try Hyrule Warriors. But I can only afford two games when I buy it at the end of this month.

  • FE Awakening is a great game IMO, it's super addicting if you like Strategy and RPG games, it also has a huge aspect of relationships between characters and you basically pair people off in the 'buddy system' which brings out super cool pay offs later. I recommend it, but it's only for the 3DS right now. A new one is coming out next year in the US too.
