misophonia?

Misophonia is a hatred of sounds to an extent where you can have panic attacks. There's certain trigger sounds that set you off. So what do you think - is it a real disorder or not?

I fucking hate whistling so much it makes me wanna rip the persons head off.

    The struggle is real.

  • I would assume so, especially for people with very sensitive hearing or combat-related PTSD

  • With whistling or with ripping peoples heads off?

  • Me, if it invades my little bubble called home. The last place I lived, I could literally hear my neighbor's phone conversations or people using the bathroom down the hall. I literally had an anxious reaction.

  • That actually doesn't bother me lol. It's when it's just someone whistling in a store or something in real life.

  • I'll let the professionals decide whether it's real or not.

  • Let me punch someone.

No, phobia would imply that it causes terror and/or crippling anxiety, not mere annoyance.

    Seriously though, fuck crying kids!

  • Hatred of sounds, huh?

Then I could just imagine the look on their face when something like grindcore is playing.

  • Eh thats not too bad. I'm more triggered by sounds that humans make or when people scrape their plate or a chalkboard shudders

  • Oh, I feel you on this one, man. I got two nieces and a nephew, and when they start crying I want to kick them through a wall.

  • I believe that it is a real disorder. I feel bad for the people that have it, because some people will tell them they're pretending, and that's just sad. You can't tell people they don't have a disorder/phobia just because you don't have it and don't understand it.

Anyway, I don't have misophonia, but I cannot stand certain sounds (mouth sounds, nails on chalkboard, any loud scraping noise, etc.)

I watched an episode of Good Mythical Morning that focused on this. However, I recommend not watching this if you really do have misophonia. Your own safety/health first, always.

  • Yeah I watched that one too and I was ready to kill that guy by the end of it.

  • I always get super annoyed and pissed when i hear someone biting on their fork or spoon.

  • Oh, Link, you mean? Ugh, same. Normally I love GMM and Rhett and Link, but I kind of wanted to strangle him after that one. -.- I feel your pain.

  • YES

I always get super annoyed and pissed when i hear someone biting on their fork or spoon.

  • Same. It's like, first off, the noise is stupid, and secondly, why would you bite it in the first place? Doesn't it hurt? Like, you don't need to bite the utensil in order to eat what's on it.

  • Haha I give them a dirty look until they get uncomfortable and leave.

  • Yes, it is a thing that exists. Yelling, lots of people talking, the garbage truck, most power tools, loud cars, and sirens. Fuck sirens.

  • There have been a few times that common noises, and ones that don't usually even annoy me, have sent me into crazy anxious meltdowns. No idea if that's the same thing.

  • It could be the same thing. Maybe you just have to already be in a certain mindset in order for it to affect you? I don't know for certain though, I'm not an expert on this.

  • There's different degrees of misophonia, you could have a lesser degree im not sure.

  • I have this to some degree. If someone rubs styrofoam against each other, it makes me upset.

  • Ugh, gross.
