King's Quest & Space Quest - Where to start?

Aside from Leisure Suit Larry, I've never played a Sierra adventure before but after playing the new King's Quest and loving it I decided to buy the collections of the old KQ and Space Quest games.

Now... I'm not sure where to start. Do you need to play the games in order to appreciate them? Or is there a more accessible jumping on point later in the series? I guess I'm looking to know which the best games are, but only if they make sense without playing the others.

All opinions are welcome. Any way, I'm super excited to finally try these out...

  • Play Kings Quest 2015. It'll catch you up on everything.

  • I already did. Looking for recommendations on the retro series...

  • Oh, you could always play the original 3 Kings Quest remakes.

They're pretty good. Really archaic design, but fun.

  • Space Quest has this habit of killing you every 15 seconds. :) So I would go with King's Quest first.

You can start with the original King's Quest, but be aware it goes way back into ancient times (the 1980s), and the interface is completely different (it's sort of a graphics/text adventure mix). Then, in King's Quest II, the interface changes completely again. And so on.

In my opinion, you don't have to play the games in order, though King's Quest 2015 has some spoilers for earlier games. As long as you keep in mind that certain things haven't happened yet when you go back in time, you should be fine starting with some of the later episodes that act at least a little more modern.

  • I've only played bits and pieces of the old KQ games, but I'd recommend starting from the beginning. And if you get tired of the 2-D style, you can jump straight to KQ8 (if you have it) since it's more of a spin off than a main entry.

  • In the original KQ series, the story is chronological (i.e. one episode follows the next). I think the best way to experience the series is to play them in order. Be warned, they are some fiendishly hard puzzles in them (by today's standards), so you may need a walkthrough.

  • That new kings quest is so good I cant wait till chapter 2

  • Whatever you do, make sure you save constantly. They didn't have autosaves or checkpoints, so if you die without a save, you start again. Also, there are some dead ends. Like, if you miss a key item, you can't progress the story.
