  • I've heard good things about The Walkking Dead comic series.

  • Harrow County. I'm really liking it. It's pretty new. First issue came out in May. #5 comes out in September. It's described as a southern gothic fairy tale. It's not quite what you described above, but it's what I'm currently reading. Here's a link if you're interested:

    Harrow County

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us. It's by far my favorite rendition of the DC universe.

  • I don't like it, thought it was boring and had no interesting characters, but a lot of people like it, anyway first issue is free (I've only read the first volume which is around 10 issues I think), so anyway if you're curious read the first issue, the first volume is also fairly inexpensive and I'd recommend that more as a sample than the first issue, so if you'd like to give it a go it's not hard, I will say that the first arc was done better in the TV show, which I also don't care for.

  • Saga, just get Saga, it's fantastic, it's a science fiction fantasy thing, much in the vein of Star Wars but it's kind of darker while still having lots of light-hearted moments, anyway I don't really want to spoil anything because it's that good, just read it, also first issue is free, it's still an ongoing series but it has stayed pretty consistent in terms of quality, definitely good stuff.

As to where can you read the first issue of it for free? I normally use Comixology.com for my comic reading.

Another one I love is Locke & Key, the story is currently done but they might do a sequel, still it's a pretty good series, it's about a house with magic keys and doors, for example there's one that opens your head and let's you look and mess with people's minds, there's another one that let's you out through any door in the world, there's one that turns you into a ghost when you pass, there's one that turns you into an animal, one that swaps your gender and so on.

The series itself has a horror feel to it but since only kids know about the keys it balances out the dark undertones really well, it's a bit gory but generally quite good but it's about ghosts and murder, it was written by Joe Hill who is a pretty damn good mystery and horror author CoughAnd Stephen King's soncough.

There's also Y: The Last Man, which is another comic written Vincent K. Vaughan (Saga's author, also created and wrote the first run Marvel's Runaways, which is also good), anyway it's a post-apocalyptic story about the end of the world via all men dying, it focuses on politics and the survival of the main character who is the last man alive(Last Y chromosome, hence the title), he is an escape artist and kind off a loser but in the end of the world all he wants is to re-unite with his fiancé who was in Australia the last time he heard about her (He is in Washington), anyway it's good stuff, Vaughan is generally a pretty damn good author, seeing his name almost certainly guarantees it'll be a good read, I only not fully endorse him because I haven't read all his works.

Alternatively, if you also like webcomics Stand Still and Stay Silent is a pretty good ongoing post-apocaliptic comic, it's about the end of the world by norse mythology, though not quite how I expected that would be, check it out at sssscomic.com, it's free so it's not like you'll lose anything and the art is actually pretty damn good.

  • I cosign reading Saga. I've heard good things about Rat Queens, Fraction's Hawkeyes & Ms. Marvel (K. Khan version).
