What happened to the Call of Duty franchise?

edited August 2015 in General Chat

I used to love Call of Duty. I used to be a fan of Call of Duty but it doesn't seem fun anymore. It doesn't seem to progress in any area whatsoever. The Story mode has not seemed to improve at all. It seems to be getting worse with one liners, bad writing, bad climax and removed options including cheats. In World at War they had cheats as well as four player story mode. Then in the next game they removed it. Black ops 2 had an option to pause and create your own personal class including perks which was removed in the next game as well and its just GO GO GO without any stopping points. The Characters are disappointing because they were not written well enough. The villains in Call of Duty are disappointing as well because of how they use them in certain scenes including the endings. For example in one of their games the villain was shot right through the chest and he was drowning underwater but then randomly he shows up out of nowhere and kidnaps the playable character. I also think that Call of Duty needs an interactive story mode where you choose what you do and where you go. For example a choice on whether or not to kill or capture a villain, attack point A or defend point B. They had it in Black Ops 2 but they chose not to have it in Ghosts. Now zombies is what keeps people (mostly the kids) buying Call of Duty. Personally I think buying Call of Duty just for the zombies isn't worth the price. Aside from zombies, multiplayer hasn't been fun at all. It's not well improved. First the killstreaks are out of order such as the UAV which has been an annoying spam for me and my friends whenever we play. Maps are big but the amount of team plays needs to change. It should be 9v9 and 12v12 especially with the killstreaks going up to 25 kills. Other then that I hope they improve in all areas of multiplayer and storymode. It seems that they tried, but it still isn't what the fans really want. And now we have Black Ops 3 which is basically another future game but just ten years ahead of the last Call of Duty. What do you guys think happened to this franchise?

  • They got lazy i guess

  • I don't think they're lazy I just think that they're not headed in the right direction.

Me too. I love the older COD games better. But Black ops is a good game too.

"What happened to this franchise?" Maybe kids happened. :P

  • Yea I dont know why the parents buy it for their kids. By now they might as well rate it "everyone 4 and up."

  • What happened to the Call of Duty franchise?

What happens to many other franchises unfortunately.....

  • That was a large wall of text. I skipped most of it... (sorry).

All I have to say is that the new CoD multiplayer was really fun for the day I got to play it.

  • Its fine that you skipped most of it. I didn't play the Beta for Black Ops 3 because I didn't pre order it. Seemed alot like the cod before though.

  • I didn't preorder either. It was a free download on PS4.

I played AW a couple of times and it was no fun. I went into the beta with a lot of skepticism, but it didn't disappoint. They still have a jet pack mechanic of sorts, but it isn't nearly as decisive in combat as AW's. It seems more like a positioning tool than a combat technique. Most all shooting still took place on your feet, and a height advantage was actually an advantage (unlike AW). The maps seemed a bit more cramped than I would have expected, and the ones that weren't had, in my opinion, average-at-best layouts. There were some interesting "short cuts" that you could take using the wall running mechanic, but I tended to find a way to just fall of the side of the map.

All in all it's the first CoD that I've actually been excited to see release since MW2.

  • Yea I heard the story was bad in AW. But I might just get Black Ops 3 because I dont have anything better to do then.

  • Nothing happened to it. You got older. The older you get and see the same things, the more the novelty wears off. This is the same thing that happens for each generation.

  • Is kinda sad that parents don't even care about what their kids are playing. I bet they even let kids play games with nudity.

  • To some players it gets better, to others it gets worse or shows little to no improvement anymore.

  • Believe me, most of the guys making the decisions at Activision only care about COD because it makes money.

Activision is mostly driven by money with no other apparent goals in sight, and so pushes for yearly releases of a tried and true formula. This lack of care for their products leaves the door open to many issues. For instance, they grant three studios three years each to create a game within a specific timeframe that leaves little room for negotiations. The time needed to actually put effort into these games to try and make them a standout is simply nonexistent. Another thing is that gamers continue to buy these products, despite the actual quality going down gradually with each release. The fact that the franchise still generates profits like it does tells Activision that they needn't do anything else but continue to push out games that are, more or less, reskins of the same formula. I will grant that Advanced Warfare tried some new things, that did work. Alas, without the proper time and resources, Sledgehammer Games, it seems, could not capitalise on such.

That is my personal analysis, anyway.

  • The same dilemma as any other successful media. The development teams are trapped between two competing demands.

1.) Squeezing as much money as possible from a wildly successful formula.

2.) Changing the formula enough with each installment to prevent diminishing margainal returns.

  • Yes, parents do this even games with profound sexual content like GTA V, and also with complete knowledge of such in a case I witnessed (The child in question is only eight years old, too).

  • The same exact games were pushed out and rushed every year and now it's been forgotten in the dark, smelly anus of obscurity

  • I've never understood the problem with this. Is there any peer reviewed information that links playing these types of games (young or otherwise) with an increased likelyhood of negative actions?

I played halo. I shot my teammates with tanks. I was an extremely timid child. Should "violent anything" = bad?

  • Nothing happened to it. That's why it sucks.

  • Liked for the colorful wordplay.
