Some people have points about them (people being disrespectful about a culture), and some people are just looking for something to complain … moreabout.
My mom used to have a friend who was the second one. She criticized my mom for speaking Japanese and me for having owning a wagasa, a type of paper umbrella that is common in several Asian countries. We used to live in Okinawa (a small, Japanese city/island). We're white. Those two don't go hand-in-hand.
However, if you're doing something like dressing up like a stereotypical Mexican or something to be racist (or even if you're just trying to be "funny" or whatever), that's completely disrespectful and disgusting, and you deserve to be made fun of (in my opinion).
Fucking white Americans. They can rap, wear dreadlocks, and wear baggy pants, and still get mislabeled as growing up or just troubled. Black… more Americans that do the same get labelled as thugs and criminals. So if you can't see why using style typified by other cultures - AND BEING ACCEPTED FOR IT- while other cultures get labelled as outsiders and not real Americans, then sod off.

Yeah, that's my point. Some people are literally looking for something to be offended by, which is why I have a hard time taking the phrase seriously these days. Like, even if you grew up in a certain culture (Japanese/Japan in my case), if you're not the "right" race in some people's eyes, and you do something with that culture they deem wrong, you're automatically the devil.
I'd loved to say cultural appropriation is awful let everyone do what they want
But unfortunately my honest opinion is different I think you should be allowed do what you want or wear from other cultures etc as long as your not hurting anyone, being offensive, illegal or doing something really strange or disturbing that has a negative affect on people around you or in the area
Like if I saw over 40 year old white weeaboo men running around in little anime school girl outfits and posting perverted hentai every where I wouldn't think HELL YEAH I hate cultural appropriation this is awesome XD
Like some cultures for example islam oppress woman and covers them completely up in turbans and control them with corrupt laws in some areas would I be for all woman in my country to adopt this approach no I would think it would be negative
I think within reason do what you want but take into account the culture of the area your are in make sure it affects no one negatively around you and doesn't insult the culture you are using make sure you do a lot of research beforehand and respect it then do what you want imo
I don't agree with how they express their opinion, there were much better ways as shown in this very thread. I also don't agree with the opinion as stated earlier in the thread.

cultural appropriation is part of english culture and always has been, even before england/UK was called england or UK.
personally i think it is a ridiculous thing to find offencive, but i would point out that there is a difference between cultural appropriation and racism towards a culture, one is based on appreciation and one is based on hate.

Cultural appropriation, trigger warnings, and microaggressions. Are we supposed to be terrified of doing something incorrect every time we talk to someone, look at someone, or just walk outside? Isn't the progressive movement suppose to be bringing people, and cultures, closer together or something?
I'll appropriate anything I want from a culture. There are few things I would ever want to, but rest assured I will if I want, because you don't own a cultural fashion.
P.S. I really have no idea what cultural appropriation is, but I suspect it's taking something from a culture without being a part of that culture.

My suspicions were close enough to make my point no less valid. Like telling someone to open their eyes when throwing the d'art after they just got a bullseye with their eyes closed.

you can be influenced by another culture and make a piece of art (for example) because of that influence, but the culture still remains with whoever influenced you
objects yes, culture no.

Cultural appropriation is a good example of the PC liberal crowd trying to one-up one another when it comes to finding potential racism anywhere (and everywhere). If you are white and do X from another culture, it's cultural appropriation. When you show somebody of that culture doing X, you're perpetuating stereotypes or 'orieintalizing the 'Other''. If you say 'fine, we just won't do X' then you're committing (_______ culture) Erasure. If you show that culture not doing X, then you're Whitewashing. No matter what you do, it's racist.
Oh, and this only applies to white people. When other cultures take up parts of European culture, that's just part of Europe's history of 'Cultural Imperialism' and/or a 'native internalization of white supremacy as propagated by the media.'
In reality, whenever you have two culture meet they're going to begin exchanging culture, and the flow of that exchange is largely dependent on the power relations between those two cultures. If it's a true exchange, then great. If it's a matter of domination (which I'm certainly not denying exists), it's tragic. But that's how most of history has worked.
A lot of people who are talking about cultural appropriation are people who wanted to be something else growing up. Now they're older and want to stop hating themselves and be who they are. So when they see people stealing what they feel is their identity it hurts. I'm one of those people so I understand.

well that's fine you're just white in an asian culture.
I see you're using the age old argument of "If you don't agree with me then fuck off".
I can see you don't agree

I had a Japanese language teacher who was mixed (black and white) and grew up in Japan her whole life pretty much.
Well what does cultural appropriation mean to you?

Well should people be allowed to steal from other cultures and call it their own?
i don't think it is possible to steal culture

It's taking it and claiming it as your own.
Maybe look up what something is before having an opinion?
No?
My suspicions were close enough to make my point no less valid. Like telling someone to open their eyes when throwing the d'art after they just got a bullseye with their eyes closed.
how is it possible?
You can't steal something and say "I made this it's mine."
OK ok. I mean they're certain things that cultures kinda own. Mostly anything traditional.
No. A culture cannot own something. Something can originate from a culture, but that's it.
objects yes, culture no.

So I could take day of the dead and make it an American holiday?
OK sure

Of course, and I could use another Halloween in my life.
enter link description here
Día de Muertos!
Best part it goes from October 31-November 2. Right along with Halloween.
Eh...I can respect the day but unless someone invites I'm not doing it.
That's funny because Louis ck's dad is Mexican.
Just look at what I said earlier in this thread.

So when they see people stealing what they feel is their identity it hurts. I'm one of those people so I understand.
I'm assuming you're white so you just don't get it.
White Privilege is funny to me, i love to say it to my white friends, just to troll them. Though seriously though, you white people owe me money.
True
You owe me money for the ride over, plus interest.
And what for exactly, I wonder?
What do you think they stole from you/your identity? I don't know what's your race or anything, so I was just wondering.
Man they've taken so much from black people.
