Monkey Island?

I'd hate to think this title is done for after we waited so long for Tales. Does anybody know what's going on since Disney bought Lucas and officially dumped all the old titles? I have seen 1 or 2 of their franchises crop up on steam.

Has DoubleFine got the rights, by any chance? I know it's unlikely since I'm sure everybody would have heard. If not, who?

  • It's a classic, but I think it's part of history now.

  • Well that's just negative thinking :(

Sony apparently sought the rights to all of the LucasArts adventure games. They're the ones who are partnering with Double Fine to do the remasters of Tim Schafer's LucasArts games, which is the reason why Maniac Mansion (because it's included in Day of the Tentacle), Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango were never released in their original versions on GOG.com or Steam.

If you're not aware, Grim Fandango Remastered is now available on Steam and GOG.com, Day of the Tentacle Remastered (with the original (enhanced) PC version of Maniac Mansion included) will be released on Steam and GOG.com next week, and Full Throttle will be released on Steam and GOG next year (all of these remasters also are on/are coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita).

Other than The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island, all of the other LucasArts adventure games are now available on either Steam or GOG.com (or both), with the exception of Labyrinth (which might be held up with licensing issues as it's a co-production with the Jim Henson Company, or it is deemed as too old to appeal to modern consumers, or both).

I'm not exactly sure why The Curse of Monkey Island or Escape from Monkey Island haven't been released on GOG.com or Steam though. It's possible that Sony is planning remasters of those titles too, but they just haven't been announced yet. Bill Tiller did state that he wanted to do a Curse of Monkey Island special edition. Of course, this is all just hypothetical at this point.

Unfortunately, since Sony's apparently got the license for the LucasArts adventure games, I really wouldn't expect anything related to Monkey Island from Telltale Games for the foreseeable future. Sony would require that they be console exclusive to Sony platforms, and that goes against Telltale's development strategy (as they strive to have their games released on as many platforms as possible).
