What choices/dialogue options do you *always* pick?

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since my last discussion here. I think my most recent was the gunfight theory I created before S2E5 dropped. Man, time flies!

Anyway, I recently did a playthrough of Seasons 1 & 2 for the first time in forever and it got me thinking...

Part of the allure in playing the game multiple times is watching what happens when you make different choices. However, in my experience, there are certain choices that I couldn't help but pick on every single playthrough. They basically became canon for me. Some options I always choose.

Season 1

  • I always take Kenny's side vs. Larry and never shame him for ditching Shawn.

  • I always make sure Clem and Duck eat, but never feed Lee.

  • I always shoot Duck.

  • i always tell Clem she needs to learn how to pull the trigger

  • I always take Clementine to Crawford

  • I always say "don't be afraid" at the end and tell Clementine to keep her hair short.

Season 2

  • I always distract the scavengers.

  • I always accept the apology

  • I always let Alvin take the food for Rebecca and listen to the baby.

  • I never agree with Carver.

  • I always try to help Kenny

  • I always go into the ticket booth.

So, what are your mandatory choices?

  • I always say "shut the fuck up" to Andy, ahahaha. I love how Lee says it.

  • Personally, I've always found Kenny to be a more interesting character if you disagree with him, at least a few times.

    * Always save Duck * Always side with Kenny #KennyIsLoveKennyIsLife * Never kill Ben

  • It's so casual; I always expect him to be like SHUT THE FUCK UP! but Lee just sounds slightly annoyed when he says it.

    • Always save Ben (incompetence should not be punished with death imo)

    • Always stayed on pretty good terms with Kenny in both season 1 and 2

    • Always have Clementine tell Carlos that he is not her dad

    • Always kill Larry (just don't understand why anyone would save him after he TRIED TO KILL LEE earlier on. Bet if Lee had died down there people would be like "fuck Larry")

    • Always save Sarah

    • Always watch Carver die

  • But maybe then in the end he will not help you finding Clementine?

    I just dislike Duck :P.

Edit: I guess I oughta give the reasons why

    • Always save Duck over Shawn (why would I save a grown ass man over a child)
    • Always save Carley over Doug (nothing personal, I just like Carley better. Also, with Carley, I get the option of telling people I trust about Lee's past)
    • Always help kill Larry (Larry was NO DOUBT gonna die in that situation)
    • Always leave Lily on the side of the road (after killing Carley there was no way she was getting back on that RV)
    • Always save Ben in Crawford (I know what he did was wrong, and I can't stand him for it, but I can't just drop someone to their death)
    • Always cut off Lee's arm (his health starts to deteriorate a lot faster if you don't and I don't like that)
    • Always kill the Stranger (I told him I was gonna do it and I did)
    • Always accept Nick's apology (I actually like Nick and there would be no other chance to accept it)
    • Always agree to be Sarah's friend
    • Always convince Walter to forgive Nick
    • Always stay to watch Carver die (I don't like how if you choose to save Alvin at the lodge, Carver keeps him up in his office basically beating him to death)
    • Always save Sarah at the trailer park
    • Always shoot Rebecca

    Season 1:

Always try to save Shawn. (I feel Kenny's story is best told with some tension between him and Lee, especially early on).

Always get combative with Larry. (too satisfying calling him an old fuck).

Always try to save Larry. (again, it helps Kenny's story in the long run, while also helping Lilly's in the short run).

Always kill the St. John brothers. (more dramatic for me).

Always steal the food. (make the conflict with the Stranger more personal).

Always shoot the woman in the street. (because fuck letting her suffer).

Always banish Lilly. (bringing her along with the story I tend to choose (being on friendly terms with her) results in poor writing).

Always remain silent during Duck discussion, but always do the deed myself when the time comes. (adds more to the scene).

Always threaten Vernon. (because it's hilarious, Lee is badass, and because fuck those people).

Always let Ben fall. (one of the most powerful scenes; any guilt I feel is also alleviated in a weird way by Lee getting bitten directly after; I don't believe Lee is a "bad guy" for doing it, but I find it fitting in a cosmically cruel way that granting a death sentence for another person is immediately followed by a death sentence being visited upon you).

Always have Clementine leave Lee behind. (far more emotional to me, seeing Clementine off making her way to the outside world, looking back on Lee passing away).

    400 Days:

Always shoot Justin. (because his voice actor delivers the pain way better than Danny's).

Always leave the car. If I lose, I go right back and do it again until I win. (because the scene is better than the alternative).

Always walk out on Nate. (because Nate can go take a long fuck-off off a short pier).

Always escape Roman's camp. (because Shel would never hurt her girlfriend... it's canon, damn it).

Always tell the truth about Dee's death. (because... well, might as well, really... there's no interesting scene to be had either way).

    Season 2:

Always put the dog out of his misery.

Always go to Pete's side. (we at least get part of Nick's monologue even then, and I feel Pete's scene is too good to lose entirely).

Always tell Walter Nick is a good guy. (Walter shows how cool he is before getting unceremoniously killed off).

Always save Alvin. (so he can get the one scene where he actually does something).

Always watch Carver die. (in the words of Pat from the Two Best Friends, because it was awesome and it kicked ass).

Always cut off Sarita's arm. (more intense afterwards).

Always leave Sarah behind. (because her second death is the epitome of absolute dumbshit writing; I'd let Nick die his first death too if Walter wasn't involved).

Always cover Luke. (because Bonnie is an idiot in that scene).

Always kill Kenny and tell Jane to screw off. (because by that point, I've had enough of Kenny and Jane is a moron; my Clem goes it alone, no matter how suicidal it is. No regrets).

Edit: God, this site has some idiotic spacing issues...

  • Great list! I see you also prefer a tense relationship with Kenny. I think it adds a lot to the story and makes scenes where he's actually reasonable/kind really shine.

    • Season 1:
    • Always try to save Larry. I hate Larry but unless we know for sure he's going to turn, I'll save him everytime. Lily and Clem shouldn't have to see him die like that.
    • Always choose to save Carley over Doug
    • Always banish Lilly. I just cannot forgive her for shooting Carley when she was no threat to the group especially as I tried to play the peacemaker.
    • Always save Ben. Yeah he's useless but I'm pretty sure alot of people would be in his position.
    • Always tell Clem to find Christa and Omid.
    • Always have Clem shoot Lee. The scene is so emotional but Lee doesn't want to turn and I feel Clem shoting Lee prepares her better for Season 2.

    • 400 Days:

    • Always walk out on Nate. I like Nate but he's no good for Russell.
    • Always escape Roman's camp. I liked Steph so I'm not going to kill her! I'd much rather of got Stephs story than Shel and Beccas tbh.
    • Always tell the truth about Dee's death. My Bonnie is...was honest all the way...

    • Season 2:

    • Always put the dog out of his misery. As an animal lover I absolutely HATE having to play this scene/this choice but having the dog suffer is so much worse!
    • Always go to Pete's side. I had high hopes for Pete. I really thought he'd live as an amputee for a while like the preview suggested!
    • Always tell Walter Nick is a good guy.
    • Always save Alvin. He may not do much but at least he goes out as a hero.
    • Always leave Carver to die. Clem does not need to see his brutal death.
    • Always save Sarah. Another character I had high hopes for. She had potential and I wanted her to follow in Clems footsteps but telltale doomed her from the start.
    • Always try to save Luke because I like Luke and he should never have died leaving me stuck with characters I don't care for!
    • Always ask Mike to let me go with them! Seriously Luke, Bonnie and Mike where my crew! Lukes gone! Don't abadon her! Take her with you!
    • Always kill Kenny because his season 1 "death" was fitting and he should have never been bought back. "Real lucky" will NEVER cut it for me.
  • My Clementine always gets slapped by Carver at the beginning of Episode 3.

  • I always leave Lee to turn at the end of S1

I always let Bonnie drown, that way you only see Mike and Arvo with one bag of supplies so they're not complete assholes.

  • Always try to save Shawn. (I feel Kenny's story is best told with some tension between him and Lee, especially early on).

A little too bad that you get a rather poorly voice acted and kind of cheesy scene of Shawn talking to Hershel while he dies, it's really the voice acting from Shawn that always puts me off.

I kinda felt the opposite actually. Felt that forming a friendship and clique with him at first and kinda going against the rest of the group and especially agreeing with some of the morally controversial descions that Kenny made, but starting to fall out with him a little and disagreeing with him later on in the game made for the most interesting storyline. All in all I felt I was still on pretty good terms with him at the end.

However what I don't get is that season 2 basically makes no sense if Lee and Kenny hate each throughout (which is possible in some peoples games right) How the hell is Clementine going to like him or even respect him then?

    • Always stand up to Larry in the drugstore (Lee just completely unloading on him the way he does is fantastic, and the moment when Lee cemented himself as one of my favorite characters ever)

    • Always refuse to go to the dairy (because of the Larry line you get when you do it. It's pretty much his best goddamn line)

    • Always talk to Larry in the meat locker (because of the additional irony of him saying all of that)

    • Always steal from the Stranger/Arvo (didn't do either of these the first time through, but for the sake of both the Stranger/Arvo being more justified in their actions, I prefer to steal)

    • Always defend/stick up for Ben (I just like the idea of Lee having a soft spot for Ben, even in spite of everything that happens)

    • Always tell Clementine about your parents when you're in the RV (because Lee has this completely ridiculous story about his mom playing the tuba)

    • Always tell Kenny or Katjaa to take care of Duck (because the scene is even more heartbreaking that way. Especially when you're trying to explain the situation to Clementine and get cut off by the gunshot, and you get the additional option of trying to explain to her that it had to be done/that it won't happen to her. And if you stay silent at that part, she lets out this completely heartbreaking little cry)

    • Always leave Clementine at the house (I mainly like it because I think it makes the scene when everyone's voting to throw Ben out even more powerful. In that moment, you end up being the only person there that sticks up and vouches for Ben, which I find kind of heartwarming)

    • Always save Ben (I love the additional scenes you get with him, and I find the Ben version of Kenny's sacrifice to be a lot better and more fulfilling than the Christa version)

    • Always have Clementine hit the Stranger with the lamp (because it's the most ridiculous and hilarious object to use)

    • Always get out of the car in Wyatt's story (because I really like the sequence that follows when you try to drag the cop back to the car. One of the best action sequences of the entire game, I'd say)

    • Always have Alvin help me find supplies (a nice little bonding scene with him. And of course, the juice box)

    • Always go with Pete (because it's Pete, what other explanation is needed here)

    • Always promise Pete that I'd look after Nick (I can't deny a man his dying wishes)

    • Always tell Nick that Pete was bitten and scared (because I find Nick's reaction to you saying that pretty sad/tragic)

    • Always pick "You're not my dad, Carlos" (one of the best sassy Clem moments)

    • Always take the watch and give it to Nick (a small gesture that I really like. On that note, they should have updated his model to wear the watch for the rest of the season)

    • Always convince Walter to forgive Nick (because I promised Pete that I'd look after him)

    • Always save Alvin (because his episode 3 scene is worth it)

    • Always watch Kenny kill Carver (just an overall great, gruesome scene. Carver also gets the last laugh in a sense when you choose to stay, which also adds to the scene)

    • Always leave Sarah at the trailer park (again, didn't do this in my first playthrough, but her death in the trailer park is 100 times better than her second death. Sarah is the first (and hopefully the last) character in the game where letting them die is better than letting them live, in just about every single way)

    • Always have Bonnie reach through the ticket booth (Bonnie gets a bruise for the rest of the season, you get an extra line that alludes to Bonnie's drug problems, and finally being able to effectively tell someone "Hell no, do it yourself for once")

    • Always choose "That you won't leave me" during the Lee flashback (because why wouldn't I choose the most masochistic option for that scene)

    • Always hug people when given the option to (Clem hugs are the best hugs)

  • Great list! I'm try the duck one and the dairy refusal next time I play through. (I'm trying to get two playthrough soldiers on my XB1, so I can transfer them).

  • However what I don't get is that season 2 basically makes no sense if Lee and Kenny hate each throughout (which is possible in some peoples games right) How the hell is Clementine going to like him or even respect him then?

Well, remember that she has the options to say she never liked Kenny and can disagree with him. It's just that, thanks to inconsistent writing, the game keeps steering her back to Kenny in some way, and there are numerous scenes and dialogues that don't match up with each other because we can't change the way the story flows. Granted, it's possible to end the game where you outright murder Kenny, but it still runs completely contrary to many things that came before, as well as driving Clem a little too far over the edge.

Plus, Clementine and Kenny had very little interaction in season 1, so automatically liking him doesn't make a ton of sense either. It only feels more "canon" than hating him because season 2 puts so much focus on the idea that Clementine is the only one who can keep Kenny from going over the edge, and Kenny, while faltering every now and again, genuinely cares about Clementine all the way through, so being against him doesn't feel as even as it did with Lee and Kenny.

  • There's no decision that I never make, I always like to mix it up. But of all the decisions I make, the one decision that I always hate choosing is leaving the dog.

  • True, it's all preference in that regard.

The way I usually do it.. (at least when I'm not playing through with Kenny bromance)

    • Be a good friend to him and side with him until the meat locker.
    • Have a falling out over the meat locker.
    • Let Kenny beat on Lee until he stops the train on his own (you get a rather touching, dramatic scene this way)
    • Help him find the strength to kill the attic boy.
    • Convince him to help you look and/or make amends in the attic.

I never really change my decisions when I go back and play, I always stick to the same choices (I hate change, what can I say). So technically, all the choices I have made are decisions I always make. So that's

    Season 1:

    • Lie to Hershel
    • Save Duck
    • Defend Duck and side with Kenny
    • Give Irene the gun
    • Save Carley
    • Chop David's leg off
    • Don't shoot Jolene
    • Kill Larry (love this choice)
    • Don't kill St. John's brothers
    • Don't steal food
    • Don't shoot girl in the street
    • Leave Lilly behind
    • Fight Kenny
    • Shoot Duck
    • Help Omid
    • Killed boy in the attic
    • Honest and rational with Vernon
    • Brought Clementine to Crawford
    • Saved Ben
    • Revealed bite
    • Don't cut the arm off
    • Lost my temper with Kenny
    • Gave up my weapons
    • Killed The Stranger (I mashed the hell out of the A button for this)
    • Had Clem shoot Lee

    Season 2:

    • Distract Scavengers
    • Kill Sam
    • Accept Nick's apology
    • Refuse to give water
    • Go with Pete
    • Took blame for photograph
    • Sat with Kenny
    • Told Walter the truth
    • Told Walter Nick is a good guy
    • Go to find Kenny
    • Help Sarah with chores
    • Told Bonnie about Luke
    • Admitted to stealing radio
    • Watched Carver die (gladly)
    • Cut Sarita's arm off
    • Save Sarah
    • Crawl through ticket booth
    • Don't rob Arvo
    • Held AJ
    • Didn't shoot Rebecca
    • Protected AJ
    • Tried to help Luke
    • Called for help
    • Didn't shoot Kenny (originally looked away, now I just don't pick up the gun so I can watch her die)
    • Am with Kenny and AJ outside Wellington
  • couldn't tell u what i chosen in S1 and S2 cuz most of the time the dang timer runs out b4 i could read my options let alone choose 1 of them. >:( thanks for that Tell Tale. I really fracking hate that blasted timer. moves way to dang fast for me most of the time. Like a zero to 60 in a blink of an eye. er.....!

However what I don't get is that season 2 basically makes no sense if Lee and Kenny hate each throughout (which is possible in some peoples games right) How the hell is Clementine going to like him or even respect him then?

I think a fair amount of that can be justified in that Lee and Kenny usually had their scenes alone/separate from Clementine. Clementine isn't in the room when he doesn't save him from Danny, or when he leaves him under a door, or yells at him/beats him up on the train, or gets pissy with him down at the river, or when he refuses to help you at the end of episode 4, or when you argue in the attic.

She probably knows there's some bad blood between the two of them, but she never really saw all the major instances of Kenny being a dick that we as the player did. At most, she probably only sees him as being a bit of a jerk. And I doubt Lee openly told her about what Kenny's done. I don't think that "Today, Kenny left me under a door to die, what an asshole" is the kind of conversation he'd want to be having with her.

Then there's the fact that Clementine is shown to be all around nice/accepting of people, at least in S1. Larry was about the only person she didn't really like. Even after Ben leaves her out on the streets, she still considers him a friend and vouches for him in Crawford. If she can forgive Ben for that, I imagine she wouldn't have much trouble forgiving Kenny for not wanting to look for her, provided that Christa actually did tell her about that (since she's the only one that would have told her about that)
