Thoughts on Kickstarter

Hey there! I'm not sure if someone has covered this in the past, but I might as well make a new thread considering the recent happening on Kickstarter with a certain robot creator.

What are your thoughts on Kickstarter and the who thing with Inafune as whole?

Personally, I think because of Inafune, people are thinking ill of kickstarters. I think Kickstarter is a great idea, but I can't back anything unless a see a demo is available or the game from what the description provides, has enough to earn my money. (i.e. Tokyo Dark, which snagged $150 from me.)

Basically, I'm sure you might know this bit, Inafune launched Mighty No.9. Everyone backed it who was a huge fan of Megaman basically. However, over time, it seems like the quality of the game has slowly declined ever since then. Along with the fact the man has delayed not only the full game, but the team he's working with has delayed the demo they were suppose to release as a "sorry" about the full game getting delayed the day it was suppose to come out. No prior knowledge was shown and it seems like the team was ready to release it.

He also seeked for more funding for an anime and such. I'm not too keen on what else he asked for.

There's also the part where he started up a project called Red Ash. Many were wondering and upset that he launched this when he was suppose to be finishing up MN9. Not only that, but Red Ash had a second kickstarter dedicated to an anime release. Red Ash also got picked up by a publisher, so while the kickstarter or even before it went up, it seems like Inafune was already in talks with them. They said "any funding this kickstarter gets will be used for stretch goals."

The game for Red Ash didn't get funded because fans were angry by what I just stated, but hey, it got picked up so WHO CARES.

  • Gosh, that is a downer.

I have to admit, I love Kickstarter and I think it is a great tool for people who wants to create something special and fulfill the backer's wishes. I backed three games on Kickstarter and I keep getting updates about the development. But just like most things in life, things can get misused. I have this thought on the back of my mind, what will prevent the creator from not doing the project? What if the project has been fake and a sham? We will never know for certain and these kind of things can easily make a lot of people doubting and distrusting Kickstarter.

There will always be people who will misuse something and I hope Kickstarter creates a system so people can get their money back in case something like this happens or an insurance that the projects gets created.

  • That's the thing, Kickstarter does not protect backers from scams. There's literally no way of telling, unless you do some hardcore research beforehand. They can promise a product but can just run away with your money and you can't do anything about it. This has happened a lot of times with projects in the past, but it seems like people are starting to catch on because reports and dirt surface.

If you want an example, here's a MLP project:

Project, because it's worth to check out for a laugh.

    Extensive Article on the project

  • Well, this is just damn scary that Kickstarter can't protect the backers. But most of the time, you have to make your own judgement. I mean, once saw a project about a backing a card game and they used a photo with a bunch of girls in revealing clothes as the photo.

But if the backing site was like the Mighty No.9, then I could easily have been fooled to back it.

  • I don't use it, there is zero accountability.

MY opinion on kickstarter is it was awesome for small companies to get funding for games they don't have

But after Shenmue 3,incident where it came out the whole kckstarter was just to check the interest of the customers for the game I never go near it

    http://www.gamesradar.com/sony-now-admitting-partnering-shenmue-3-kickstarter-leaves-bad-taste-my-mouth/

Big companies are using it to get even more money for games robbing customers when they have the money to make it for extra profit

Plus the fact your never guaranteed they will actually make the game meaning you might as well burn your money then fund a game be exact same

As for Inafune incident wasn't the first and certainly won't be the last

  • Did that project happen to be this? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662858658/barbarossa-anime-card-game-from-japan

Yeah, Jim Sterling did a wonderful video covering Inafune and how older/well known devs are going to Kickstarter.

  • Ah, the Shenmune 3 one. To me, it seems like whenever people bring back an older series to revive it or an older dev like Inafune or Igarashi have an idea and throw it up on Kickstarter, people forget about the consequences of backing a kickstarter and throw their money blindly at them. Not to say Igarashi won't deliver, it seems like him and his team are very keen on Bloodstained releasing with the utmost quality. I can't say the same for Shenmune 3 however, because there's been very little to show ever since it got funded. Literally, the most backers got was an outline on the development. They need to show GAMEPLAY OR CONCEPT ART. SOMETHING!

As for Inafune incident wasn't the first and certainly won't be the last

Certainly, but it seemed to be the first that a well known dev would take advantage of it and just seemingly produce nothing in the end, or at least crap in return.

I've backed well over $1500 on over 100 Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Fig campaigns. I haven't been disappointed with what I got so far since I'm just interested in helping creators with projects that I find interesting make their dream to make a project come true.

I'm a creator myself, so it probably has something to do with my feelings on the matter, since I have insight into the process, but I don't care if the development takes four to six times as long as originally stated on the campaign, or if it has gone through multiple different iterations throughout the design or multiple developers, or experiences any other kind of setback along the way. As long as they're able to eventually make their dream a reality, and successfully give me something for the money that I spent to back it, then personally I'm happy with the result.

  • What game ended up being the best of the games you backed in your opinion?

  • From what I know, that only seems to be the case when the creator offers refunds.

  • But if a guy offers 150 dollars or something insane he has no choice to get that refunded if it falls through?

The creator gets the keep all the money then why would companies even bother make the games if they can keep all the profits and do nothing

They can set an insane amount to get which never gets reached and they can keep all the profit even if it is reached they can make a terrible cheap game

My favorite is The Book of Unwritten Tales 2. The game is excellent from start to finish, and really has an epic feel (the cinematic soundtrack and excellent voice acting melds with the fantastic story, which has the right blend of humor and drama).

On top of that, I pledged at a level to get the classic big box, and the Book of Unwritten Tales 2 box is the greatest of the big boxes I've gotten so far. It's in the shape and style of a big book, and includes a fantastic art book, making of the game, and soundtrack..
