Good advice thread.

edited October 2015 in General Chat

I decided to create this thread, due to the fact the world is full of danger.
Everyday, there are people out there who prey on the weak, and the innocent and naive.
In order to survive this, and to develop their "street skills" people need to learn to exercise their power of perception, and common sense.

So I wish to share with some things that I have read recently, that I hope will be of benefit to you.

"Perceptive – Having or showing keenness of insight, understanding, or intuition. Possessing the powers of perception.Perception – The act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.

Insight – An instance of apprehending the true nature of a thing, especially through intuitive understanding. Faculty of seeing into inner character or underlying truth.

Understanding – Mental process of a person who comprehends; comprehension. Superior power of discernment. Enlightened intelligence.

Intuition – Direct perception of truth, fact, etc., independent of any reasoning process. A keen and quick insight.

5 Changes You Can Make To Be More Perceptive

1) Opening Your EyesIt’s Marvelous What You Can See When You Open Your Eyes. (Author Unknown)This is step #1 on Being More Perceptive.Open your eyes. Pay attention to what’s going on around you. After all, how can you perceive anything if you’re not looking.

2) Pay AttentionChoice Of Attention – To Pay Attention To This And Ignore That – Is To The Inner Life What Choice Of Action Is To The Outer. In Both Cases, A Man Is Responsible For His Choice And Must Accept The Consequences, Whatever They May Be. (W. H. Auden). This quote sums it all up. Tell me what a person pays attention to and I give you a pretty good idea as to how their life will turn out. If you pay attention to mind-numbing things, you and your mind will become numb. If you pay attention to great things, you and your mind will become great. So I ask you, what do you pay attention to? Do you pay attention to your work; to your family; to your community?

3) Develop And Trust Your IntuitionIntuition Comes Very Close To Clairvoyance; It Appears To Be The Extrasensory Perception Of Reality. - (Alexis Carrel). Clairvoyance – The supernatural power of seeing objects or actions removed in space or time from natural viewing. Quick, intuitive knowledge of things and people.Trusting yourself – that is possibly one of the most important skills a person needs to learn during their life. I also think it’s one of the most important skills a parent can teach their children. Trust Yourself, that’s what intuition is all about. If you get a sense of something; if you get a feeling about something, do NOT ignore it. Instead, pay attention to it. It’s probably trying to tell you something. I’ve always been pretty good at trusting my intuition (my initial sense of things), but I’ve found that as I grow more experienced (and hopefully wiser) I’m having to rely upon my intuition even more.If you smell a rat; it’s probably a rat.If something looks good to you; it probably is.If something looks suspicious to you; it probably is. Learn to trust yourself.

4) Shut Out DistractionsOnly In Quiet Waters Do Things Mirror Themselves Undistorted. Only In A Quiet Mind Is Adequate Perception Of The World. - (Hans Margolius). We have to take time each day to shut things down. We have to take a little bit of time off each day (even if it’s only 5 minutes). It’s only when our minds are quiet that we can begin to pay FULL attention to what is going on around us. It’s only when our minds are quiet that we can get the TOTAL PICTURE. Human beings love routine. I encourage you to develop a routine that gives you a few minutes ALONE each day (preferably at least an hour – but less is okay if that’s all you can do).Take time to shut off the rest of the world. Take time to pay attention to yourself AND ONLY yourself. That’s when your perceptions will speak to you the loudest.

5) Realize That Just Because Someone Else Hasn’t Perceived Something Doesn’t Mean What You Perceive Is Not True Do Not Allow Other Persons Limited Perceptions Of Us To Define Us. (Virginia Satir) Just because other people “don’t get it”, doesn’t mean you’re not supposed to get it.True believers, true leaders, OFTEN perceive things before others do.That’s your job. Don’t run away from it, embrace it.Until next time, may you find your path by walking it . . .Stanley F. Bronstein."

The man who wrote the article, Stanley F. Bronstein, is not me.
But the reason I share his article, is because obviously he has some sound counsel.
The part I found particularly interesting, is second portion of the article.
"Tell me what a man pays attention to, and I will give you a pretty good idea of how his life will turn out."
In other words, what he is saying is: if you don't spend your time gaining new knowledge, and I'm not just talking book smarts, you will never grow as a person.
"Knowledge is power."

Also, I have included a video that talks a bit more about common sense, and that reinforces the article I just included.
The man in the video is not me, to be clear.

"When I disagree with a rational man, I let reality be the final arbiter. If I am right, he will learn; if I am wrong, I will. One of us will win, but both will profit" - Ayn Rand.

Say what you shall about Ayn Rand and her philosophy, but THIS is most certainly true.

  • Don't be yourself, be who you wish you could be. Don't let someone ever tell you your worth because only you are allowed to do that. People will tell you the best advice is just being yourself, then turn around and spit on you once you do because you aren't the version of yourself that they like. So think of the best thing you could be, and be it. Be that famous actor. Be the main role in that play or the leader of the cheer team. Be a CIA agent, be fit as fuck or super smart. Never feel stuck as who you think you are destined to be. You're in charge of you.

  • Don't give in to peer pressure or ridiculous fads just to feel accepted. Doing things out of your comfort zone for the approval of others is incredibly stupid.

  • I need to start receiving my tithes first. Once the Catholic world starts sending me 10% of their annual income I'll be able to afford it.

This is a part of a wikipedia article:

Generally, rape is still thought to be a crime against women specifically (and historically was defined this way), although many cases of male rape have become subject of public discussion recently. Dr. Maeve Eogan and Deirdra Richardson, respectively the medical director of the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit (SATU) of Rotunda Hospital and a sexual assault forensic examiner, said that male rape is still taboo to be spoken about and has a negative connotation among both heterosexual and homosexual men.

Community and service providers often react to the sexual orientation of male victims and the gender of his perpetrator. Mostly, male victims try to hide, and deny their victimization, unlike the female victims, unless they have serious physical injuries. Eventually, the male victims may be very vague in explaining their injuries when they're seeking medical or mental health services. It is difficult for a male victim, heterosexual or homosexual, to report the sexual assault that was experienced by him, especially in a society with a strong masculine custom. An Indian counselor named Ajay Sathyan said "They don't have a platform to speak out. Even families don't want to acknowledge it publicly." They are afraid that people will doubt their sexual orientation and label them as homosexuals. A perception of being homosexual is also alleged to be the motive in many cases.

Male rape is less commonly known, because the victims are too afraid to speak out. And I quote: It is difficult for a male victim, heterosexual or homosexual, to report the sexual assault that was experienced by him, especially in a society with a strong masculine custom. That doesn't make it non existant, and just straight up saying that it doesn't exist is just ignorant!

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

  • Men don't get raped.

That is quite possibly the most ignorant thing I've ever seen anyone say. It is possible for men to be raped, and it's pretty frequent in prison systems. Saying that men don't get raped is like saying women don't murder. The only reason male rape isn't heard about is because victims are too afraid to speak out because they are expected to be the predators.

Women should be able to defend themselves against any harm that targets both genders. Denying them that right is denying equality.

Women shouldn't need to defend themselves, and they wouldn't need to if we could get rid of this rape culture (especially on college campuses). This all starts by notifying men that rape is indeed wrong.

Men CAN be raped, the definition of rape is sex where one of the parties do not consent, in this case if the male doesn't agree it's rape.

Men can be raped by another man or a woman, doesn't matter, as long as the man doesn't consent and it still goes through, he's raped.

I've already told you why we don't have much examples of this.
