What's wrong with Western people when it comes to kids stories?

I dont get why people from the west thinks that kids game/story = light hearted and full of jokes. No racism here, please do not be offended.

I've never seen a serious animation from the west for kids. (There are some, but they are still full of fart jokes.) I just found it very weird and wanted to soeak my mind.

P.S. I posted this in the minecraft section because it just displays beautifully how even game developers think that kids stuff = light hearted and full of jokes.

  • There're lots of serious Western animations without eg fart jokes from what I know?

Avatar comes to mind. Adventure time can apparently also be quite serious.

  • It's not all of them, and creators are finally getting that idea. But yeah, American networks in particular think that kids can't handle much in terms of darkness or depth.

They are, of course, wrong. And stupid. But part of that is also the parents, who think coddling and sheltering there kids from the real world will somehow better prepare them for the real world. Again, wrong and stupid.

  • Other than avatar, I never seen any others. Avatar wasnt even that serious compared to Asian animation.

  • I get what your saying, but at the same time you've been requesting intense swearing in a E10+ game which is just...Dumb.

  • It's really funny game of thrones was rated R, in Asia the highest it would probably go is PG - PG13

I meant that as a joke. Also, I never requested intense swearing nor do I like intense swearing. I made a few topics on the off topic board and said TWD and TWAU sweared too much. I also mentioned before I do not like hearing the f word

  • I've found a lighthearted atmosphere to be refreshing more often than naught, though I do believe that the cruder side of humor should be put to rest more. I feel like people seek after too much "realism" or "edge" in life, so more content considered "for adults" finds itself getting spewed out from the minds of the developers who seek to please the masses. I find it telling, however, that when it came to Nintendo, they first released Wind Waker, got tons of flak from their fanbase, made a darker game, then found the fanbase preferring Wind Waker. This may not entirely be the case, but I get the feeling that most gamers (or audiences of other mediums) don't really know what they want until they find something that lasts for several years, which I've seen time and again be stuff originally intended for a younger audience.

There's the entire run of the DCAU (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Gotham Girls, Lobo, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and the films based on them: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman: Subzero, Batman: The Mystery of the Catwoman, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker). The recent Young Justice series is very much like the DCAU series in terms of mature content aimed at a younger audience as well.

  • Pretty sure it's because exposing kids to harsh realities at such a young age makes them much more vulnerable to mental illnesses or radical thinking.

  • Its not really western its more just american where its that kind of humour, Most kids shows I watched didnt have that stuff in

Which Asian animations for kids are you comparing western shows to? Are you referring to stuff made for 8-12 year olds like Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z? If so, then there are certainly western equivalents like Transformers, He-man, and Thundercats.

If you're referring to more mature programming like Samurai Champloo, Blood+, Death Note, etc, then yeah, there aren't really any comparable serious western animations. Most of the serious, "mature" programming in the west is done through live action, while animation tends to be more reserved for comedy. It isn't so much a difference in how kids are treated as it is a difference in how the medium of animation is treated.

  • Because white people think kids are stupid

    That's very offensive.

  • Well, I can tell you've never seen this

There's also this, which, while it definitely wasn't intended for kids when it was created in the 1950s, was being shown to 13 year olds in school by the time I was that age in the 1990s.

  • I say it's kids these days grabs pipe they don't shown disturbing images like we used to back in the 80's and 90's. They're too soft and coddled, and we try and spare them from every negative emotion rather than having them face it.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg...

Not to mention the Brave Little Toaster has a song about depression, made even darker when you realize the author of the book it was based on committed suicide... Then there's the clown scene...

  • Why do I feel like this is where the animators of Celebrity Deathmatch got their start?

Not so much 'scary' as a trip down the uncanny valley...

How the fuck does Batman not count?

Especially the mind rape Robin gets leading to the death of Joker?

  • If you judge Adventure Time by its art style, you're superficial and missing out on what is one of the best cartoons in current production. This is one of the most honest emotional moments of any cartoon.

  • How about this moment from the Hunchback of Notre Dame where a priest is basically praying to God for an opportunity to rape a Gypsy woman?

Is the death of a spouse not 'serious' enough? Because this three minutes in UP made everyone I know cry at the time... and that was my last year of college.
