A clean shave works in all scenarios, because it is, well, clean. The facial hair needs to be kempt and bear a semblance of order, much like the hair on one's scalp. in fact, It also needs to work in conjunction with your hairstyle. For instance, one could have a full beard or a stubble but it would look ridiculous combined with a pompadour hairstyle (with which a trimmed moustache could work in my opinion).

Full beard, hands down. However, preferably trimmed and kept trimmed. No need to look like a hermit.
