The only reason someone had to grind for materia exp was to beat ruby/emerald. Two optional bosses that are pointless to fight from a reward standpoint. The entire rest of the game, the materia that you actually use is going to level up with you.
Look, I played Star Ocean 4. The combat is action/rpg and painfully repetative. Whether its turn-based or action, it's an rpg so there is going to be a need to grind. It's just a matter of what combat system a person prefers. I don't have a problem with the way they're handling the remake. It seems like most people these days like the actionrpg combat, and that's just about all square has been doing for the last 10 years anyway. I can always go back and play the original, this in no way takes away from that experience.
I didn't think the complaints were that the materia system was too complex to understand but rather that it compelled the player to grind wi… moreth sub-optimal set-ups in order to get the most out of the system. And with the battles being what they were, that made for a great story experience that was watered down with long stretches of dull, repetitive gameplay. By making combat more action-intensive and varied (from the gameplay footage, it seems like they're going to allow us to swap freely between party members in battle, which would help immensely) and perhaps making materia growth less of a grindfest, they could alleviate that problem.
See I was hoping that was the case too, but earlier today I read an article on gameinformer(i think) where they asked a developer a few questions, and the dev said they were moving away from the turn based system for the remake.
The system might be surprisingly similar.
There is "defend" command listed. Making me think that maybe you just give them orders during a… more fight.
FFVII combat system was already semi-realtime without characters moving around. It's not that huge leap if it doesn't pause during accessing the sub-menus. Also if you play it in "active" time battle format, it doesn't pause in any of the menus (outside of pause command of course.)
They might be trying to make combat look more like Advent Children Complete and not give you direct control over the actual movement part during them.
Fair enough. I see your points, I just dislike fans of turn-based combat being shafted once again and the genre being cast further into obscurity.
However, if Square Enix feels like they have truly done everything under the sun in terms of turn-based combat, yet there are many requesting a change in combat style as you say as the previous systems have been unbalanced and are archaic in some peoples minds, then surely SE know they haven't really gone as far as they can with turn-based combat? Not saying that may be truth, but I just find it interesting.
Oh for sure there would be. There were articles coming out the day of the announcement discussing the possibility of a new battle system, wi… moreth many of them concluding that, yes, that would be likely the way to go (there were of course also articles concluding the opposite).
And Square Enix has had experience in producing both styles of gameplay as well as everything in between. It's not a lack of experience in turn-based combat that's driving this decision. In fact, it's probably just the opposite. They probably feel like they've done just about everything under the sun when it comes to turn-based games and see new avenues of creativity in action combat.
Ugh. I hate this mentality.
One of the games most widely known for turn-based combat is now ditching it, which is seen as the modern way … moreof doing things by many. It's killing genres and styles of gameplay by the dozen; turn-based ones now including FF and Fallout have ditched it in favor of more generic looking gameplay and fans of it like me are stuck watching it slowly fade into obscurity.
"Fans of the original version". That's exactly your problem, mate. This isn't the original version. This is a complete remake of the game from the ground up. If you don't like the new combat, then play the original version you love so much.
Then maybe they could have IMPROVED the turn-based system, not REMOVE it entirely to completely shaft the many fans of the original version … morewho appreciated the system despite its flaws (which I agree were present). It just reeks of streamlining to appeal to the modern gaming audience for the sake of raking in a little extra $$$.
Final Fantasy has come such a long way. I wish I knew more about making video games. I have a nearly complete idea for an RPG. An epic adventure like Dragon Quest 3, but with qualities of Golden Sun and modern 3D graphics. It's a coming of age story about a teen who goes on an adventure to find something for his grandpa and manages to take down an evil empire. It would be a beautiful, sad, funny, and fun game.
Huh... well that's...unexpected. I mean the original game was divided into 4 discs, but that was just a technological limitations thing. This is just...huh. Eh, screw it, we'll just have to wait and see.
Episodic seems pretty cool if episodes are at least 5-6 hours long and focus on different characters and possible even different game styles to break away from any repetition. It could be complete shit as well, but I'm leaning on the more hopeful side. I've always liked the idea of an episodic RPG...That's just me of course...

If they're skilled they could make it work. Its just a lot easier to make absurdity feel natural in a cartoon. I don't have a ton of faith in them after cringing through every line of Wedge's dialogue in the trailer.
Oh no I'm triggered because Cloud is in a dress for a small brief moment in the game oh boo hoo hoo. That's such a weird concern.
Just to… more clarify I know you don't care too much about the idea that he's in a dress, but I don't see how more realistic graphics could make the scene turn out creepy if their playing for laughs.

But I find it cool if we get insane polish in return. Imagine how much more impactful they can make those iconic scenes by having spent a lot of time to tune them.
Backstabbing Aerith has never looked as realistic or dare I say... vivid!
Yeah but the original system wasn't fully turn based on a first place.
If you were sluggish, enemies got to attack even if you didn't do… more anything. It didn't really stop for you outside of during attack animations etc.
It's kind of like FFXIII's combat system without movement in that regard. Expect they don't have to wait one's attack to finish have others to attack.

Thanks for this. In light of the episodic nature, the line about trying to keep the original's "density" is reassuring. As is the confirmation that we will indeed get to switch between characters in battle. Should make for plenty of variation in combat. The presence of an ATB bar is also interesting. I'm betting it's something like a special skill system with cooldown.
All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Here's an interview the developers of the remake did with Famitsu that some people might find interesting. It addresses some pretty cool points,

I feel that it's one of those deals they use to fund the remake.
Final Fantasy VII remake is overall going to be probably the most expensive non-MMO game they have developed so far. This is just a guess but rather plausible one.
So they do deals like "We use your engine to do this if you give us cash!" and naturally timed-exclusivity fits to that idea too of making deals for money.
Considering how big thing "Final Fantasy VII" is to gaming world, it's plausible that the owners of Unreal Engline 4 would like to show its "real power" with a potential mega hit title.
I have hard time to find many other plausible explanations considering they have in-house engine that is pretty much toe to toe with Unreal Engine 4.
Of course this is just mere speculation from my part.
I love how negative people are about it being episodic........on a telltale forum.
Sry i just love that irony. But to be honest as long as its true to the spirit of the original and it doesn't end up being one of 'those' remakes i don't care and willing to have hope for it.
To be honest, I was fucking livid when they first announced it was episodic. But after hearing two things (each ep will be the size of a full game, and their reasoning as to WHY it's episodic), I am now completely and 100% confident that this will be the best game of all time.

You hate the mentality that turn-based combat isn't what makes final fantasy an amazing series?
Also, the combat looks just like Kingdom Hearts, and that game has one of the best combat systems ever. I'm confident they can handle it.

Maybe I can finally finish that game. If the redid FF8, i would be in hog heaven.
i hope this episodic shit turns out all right instead of a cut down 2hr game and a 3-6 month wait in between wait for each.

So, the game is going to be episodic. All the hopes I had for the game are now crushed.
Ugh, episodic... Gross.

Already looks like shit.
I mean, whatever. I don't need FF7, the far better RPG, Undertale, is still boggling my mind.
Love the new look. Can't wait to play this!

Let's hope that "multi-part" series turns out to be just their way of saying that they will do sequels.
As long the entire story gets remaked I'm fine with both ways but I would prefer to have my 30+ hours long game "marathon" as one chunk.
Can't wait to start it on the PS4 and then finish it on the PS6 or 7.
If they're skilled they could make it work. Its just a lot easier to make absurdity feel natural in a cartoon. I don't have a ton of faith in them after cringing through every line of Wedge's dialogue in the trailer.
Fat chance
You ain't kidding

I believe there is an option to have 'time stop' while you're selecting an action.
*I'm wrong. Which is strange, because I'm certain in FF6 attacks would stop while you are selecting an action.
Well, it is being made by the guy who did Kingdom Hearts so...get ready for FFVII: Birth by Mako Final Mix exclusively on the Vita 2.0.
Do you think it was a good decision to make it episodic? I know the game isn't out yet, but what do you guys think now?
Impact is not accomplished by graphics.
It's shit.
Just the worst.

Thank you for posting this!:)
That edition of the game will also come with RE: Crisis Core. Only available in Japan too.
Polish compasses a lot more than the graphics.
It's to make motion capture scene to look good and more.
I'm too tired to deal with this crap right now, you know.

Tetsuya took his gameplay with him lol
I'm happy Versus XIII gameplay will live on.
