It is a shame, but I only realized the blue color of eyes has the same origin as the blue color of the sky (Rayleigh scattering) only a couple of years ago. And I'm a biologist!
I live in Ukraine and I often use the subway to travel around and I'm always astounded by the amount of blue/gray/green-eyed people I see, because I was led to believe that we Ukrainians are largely dark-haired and dark-eyed (I'm among them). Maybe that's true, but damn if I'm not sure anymore. And yeah, important thing to note - 50% of Russians. They aren't the only demographic in Russia.
