I think they're in the process of abandoning their engine. They said that they wouldn't be using it for FF7 back in August and they're not using it for the new Kingdom Hearts either. They've probably either realized its crap or its more trouble than its worth when there are perfectly good alternatives.
I feel that it's one of those deals they use to fund the remake.
Final Fantasy VII remake is overall going to be probably the most expens… moreive non-MMO game they have developed so far. This is just a guess but rather plausible one.
So they do deals like "We use your engine to do this if you give us cash!" and naturally timed-exclusivity fits to that idea too of making deals for money.
Considering how big thing "Final Fantasy VII" is to gaming world, it's plausible that the owners of Unreal Engline 4 would like to show its "real power" with a potential mega hit title.
I have hard time to find many other plausible explanations considering they have in-house engine that is pretty much toe to toe with Unreal Engine 4.
Of course this is just mere speculation from my part.

As usual. The companies reveal stuff well ahead of time so that the less rational reactions are replaced with more rational ones.
Combat system never was fully turn-based but rather about waiting gauge to fill up so that the character can attack. In Final Fantasy XIII they changed that concept to allow simulateous attacks. If you started to idle during combat, the enemies kept attacking as their gauges filled up in a meantime.
We still don't know if characters can be moved directly or if they just follow the commands.
To be honest, I was fucking livid when they first announced it was episodic. But after hearing two things (each ep will be the size of a ful… morel game, and their reasoning as to WHY it's episodic), I am now completely and 100% confident that this will be the best game of all time.
I like the idea of it being episodic since it'll make the experience last longer instead of being over and done with in a few sittings, something that I like about episodic games because it gives you time to talk with other fans and look forward to what's coming next. Even I'm interested to give this FF7 remake a shot and I've never really been a fan of FF7. I did play some of the earlier game, but the graphics were so dated I couldn't get into it. I've got no excuses now lol.

Episodic is a really dirty word to be using for this, note how Square have never actually said "Episodic" at all. I was originally completely against this idea to be fair, but Kitase wrote this article recently:
"One thing that we wanted to be clear about during this weekend to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you’d share our vision for what we want to deliver. The biggest reason why we haven’t done a remake until now is because it’s a massive undertaking to reconstruct FINAL FANTASY VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of FINAL FANTASY VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldn’t possibly fit into one instalment.
We’ve seen everyone’s comments and reactions to the news that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be a multi-part series and many have speculated correctly as to the reason why we have made this decision. If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake instalment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that."
You know the weird part? I believe him entirely. It's impossible to contain THAT much with full voice acting, better visuals and a complete overhaul of the game's mechanics. I originally was completely against this idea. But when I do look back, I did think it was actually impossible to remake Final Fantasy VII without removing some portions or lower the density of some things.
So I actually think this might be a good move now, if we get a trilogy out of this (think Back to the Future Part II & Part III and compare it with Final Fantasy VII Remake Part II & Part III) I'd be on the side of YES for this for that matter, but only if each installment his a large density and each entry is a full game (I heard that each one will be). If it goes like that, hell yes. I'm up for it.
Note: The article doesn't mean that the game is ready to have it's first "part" out.
Anyway, seems that they want to expand this whole AVALANCE thing before they kill those characters off.
It seems that they want to include almost everything plus more. It's like their pride/honor is at stage to deliver.
As absurd it might sound, this game's quality has a huge impact how well the company does. If the game turns out to be abysmal crap then it would scare away the investors and people would eject their stock.
This game is their proving grounds that they still got it as a company.

Although Square Enix is more creative when it comes to naming their engines.

I wouldn't be surprised if episodic games that are deemed generally good also profit more than single releases.
Speculation is like free advertisement and people want to hop in instead of wait for a sale.
Not that console sales usually are that impressive but you get what I mean.

Can we please use spoiler tags I know the game is old and everybody should know now but please
Sure, with fresh story details I can do that.
This stuff is almost twenty years old, you know.
Okay.
