God I hate this country sometimes.
Our friends on Capitol Hill just attached CISA to the Omnibus Budget Deal (the one keeping the government from shutting down...again). This basically means that CISA (Cybersecurity Information Sharing and Protection Act) is guaranteed to pass and be signed into law by President Obama. The bill probably wouldn't have passed on its own, so the snakes pushing it had to attach it as a rider to a bill they knew would pass.
Among other things, this law will allow private corporations to pass on your private information and such to the Feds and local cops **on the mere suspicion that you may be a threat to cybersecurity. So yeah, we're deputizing the goddamn private sector to fight cyber crime. One large step towards complete corporate dominance of the Internet.
America, your democracy in action! I'm really not sure how we as Americans should be reacting against this, or if we can even react at all.

Yep and unfortunately, there's literally no way it won't happen. Obama has to sign that bill into law, no matter how many earmarks and bullshit riders are attached to it.
He doesn't have to do anything, but that doesn't mean he isn't going to.

Well I think there should be some debate about the necessity/legality/wisdom of attaching things to bills in order to get them to pass when they otherwise couldn't, prior to passing such bills. Of course it's going to get passed, I acknowledged that, but I think that this practice needs to come to an end. Taking everything that gets voted down and attaching it to other things to slip it through is complete bullshit. You know, I know it, they know it. It's why they do it.
Absolutely, but the Senate is an old-boy's club and this is their legal sanctioned way of siphoning resources to their state and getting their undemocratic, sore-loser way. Short of mass revolt, I don't see that changing.

Because that's how you go to prison. The only real option is electing new representatives, but in today's government I don't see that really improving things either. Greed is too strong. Maybe I'm too cynical.
Considering they just keep finding new ways to passive aggressively shoehorn it in via underhanded techniques (such as Trans Pacific Partnership), they seem hellbent enough on this to where protesting wouldn't work. It shouldn't be that way, but alas, crony capitalism prevails yet again.

Eh, I've managed to evade capture once or twice, though not for anything quite so dramatic. But the point of direct actions is getting enough people whipped into a frenzy that "you can arrest all of us" kicks in. The question is how, or if you can get people mad enough to risk getting beaten/tear-gassed.
Unfortunately, electing new legislators is a non-solution. Thanks to widespread gerrymandering, incumbents tend to be dug in like ticks. Urban representatives may get the boot occasionally, but the fine folks in Bumfuck, Arkansas probably won't be deposing their representative until he/she has the good grace to retire or die.
Shocker, these people don't like to just let this stuff die, but prefer to keep pushing the issue. Methinks they fail to understand that we aren't just nerds behind a computer screen. People who use the internet are still the majority in the country, after all.
I actually have joked, not here but if Trump somehow not only wins nomination but also the presidency (we don't have that many mentally defficient people in America, right?), but this video works for whenever shit like this happens

Things like these are more complex than it first appears.
Typical law abiding citizen would just ask "Why does it matter unless you break the law?" or more like "What does it matter if you have nothing to hide?"
Basically what this means, why you should care if you don't plan to break the law? Sure these things are theoretically intended to protect you. Then again, we all know that this will lead to more abuse than actual protection.
Still, some take their privacy way too far to the point that nobody should not even know their favorite food.
The whole 'only criminals need be worried' argument implies that everyone involved is completely righteous and uncorruptable. Because we're talking about humans running this, it's a false assumption.

Actually Paul Ryan had to give up Rand, or at least pretend to. The Catholic Church apparently sent him a not-so-nice letter about it when he wrote that his "balanced" budget that would slash open the social safety net.
After the archdiocese of whothefuckknows called him out on it, he back pedaled and dismissed Rand as an "atheist philosopher". At least he got the atheist part right.
