Talking during a meal, what´s your opinion?

  • I actually like talking with my family at dinner. I think it's pretty normal here, but you're supposed to talk without food in your mouth.

People yell at me because I don't talk and eat - I talk or I eat. I'm eating and I don't say anything or we're having a conversation then I get "hurry up!"

Btw, you have the completely wrong idea about Korea, the above being the example.

  • Aha ok.

Oh, and I who really thought that the asians hated conversations during a meal. atleast the japanese.

  • With my family, we are very laid-back with this.

  • I really see no problem. How is people talking while eating hurting anyone?

  • I don't care that much. But if I'm really hungry I prefer not to do it.

  • My aunt is a psychologist and therefore believes that eating together is a very important part of a family dynamic - which involves talking. Usually about our days, political opinions and so forth. I quite enjoy it, though as someone who is easily annoyed, I can see why some people may not be fond of it.

  • I'm not a very talkative person, so while I tend to not say much, I quite enjoy when the people around me are talking. I especially enjoy holiday dinners when my both sides of my family get together and everyone has a good time. I'm not one for small talk, so unless I find a conversation to be interesting I generally don't join in, but if there wasn't a mass of conversation around me I feel that dinners would be awkward and far less enjoyable. I like to enjoy myself, not sit in rigid formality. I've eaten at people's houses where everything is silent and totally formal, and I've never gone back.

  • It irritates me so much when I'm eating with friends or family and it's just complete silence. XD

It's a good chance to chat about things. Just not with your mouth full :p

  • So you really don´t get uncomfortable when people speaks with food in mouth? Or if they starts to sound like a whole bloody orchestra?

  • I tend to stuff my face like a damn caveman while I'm eating, so conversing during a meal is difficult.

  • I really enjoy the talking I don't talk much when I eat but I find the conversations interesting to listen to as I eat

  • I don't like people talking to me when they know that I am chewing my food. They even get mad when I don't answer back quick enough.

  • That's just silly on their behalf.

  • Unfortunately, it happens especially with my relatives and mom.

  • Chew slower and make them wait longer, that's what I'd do.

  • As long as they don't talk and eat the same time, cause that's uh... Growdy. Also, if I don't get a bunch of spit covered food bits onto my face, then it's fine.

  • I already have a friend that does it all the time. I've learned to cope with it. (Key word being cope. Not tolerate)

  • As long as they don't talk while they chew or say something disgusting it's fine

  • I don't do it. I eat alone while I work. Depressing, right?

  • Don't be so down. Nothing wrong with multi tasking

  • True. I was just stating that the situation was in fact depressing.

  • Uh if you mean people talking clearly with food around them that they'll occasionally bite into and proceed talking, no...I'm not bothered by that at all. That's just called a conversation. People talking with their mouth full? Yeah, I can see that being a problem with people.

  • Bruh, the only time I even see my family is lunch time. How do you want me not to talk?

  • As long as they don't demand an answer right away or expect a deep and fast paced conversation, in a few words, if they don't hinder my eating, I don't see it being a problem. If their half-chewed bites are flying my way, however, that alters the case. DRASTICALLY. Otherwise, I actually enjoy companionship and conversation over a silent meal.

  • It sounds a little boring not to talk with people if I'm eating with them...

  • Meh, I think people are allowed to talk whilst eating if they want, I have no right to tell them what to do, even if I prefer the opposite, however, it's not that great if chewed food with saliva touches my face...

  • Hello everyone, I´m sorry that I acted like a complete bābo (korean for word for idiot) but it was never my intention, it´s a part of my Aspergers diagnose. However, I´m aware that you can not act like that all the life and get forgiven but I´m telling you, sometimes it´s really hard to aviod.

However, I´m still not a fan of people talking during a meal but that´s because of bad experiences with people talking about things you really don´t talk about at the table, like if they´re going to have a visit at the gynecologist or things like that. So it´s because I associate mealtime talking with those kind of things I´m against it.

Finally, could a mod please remove this thread? It feels very pointless.
