Diversity in the Oscars

  • It's great in a way that makes you want to cry in the fetal position for days.

I heard that that movie was great as well. :P Yeah, I heard that Jada Pinkett is the one who is starting the boycott.

  • The only movie I've seen this year that had an Oscar-worthy performance from a person of color was Samuel L. Jackson in the H8ful 8. Although, he's recieved plenty of awards.

You didn't make a mistake. This is good discussion, and it's interesting to see other peoples opinions...even though I disagree with you.
If it started a massive argument and everyone baiting each other...well, that's a different story.

I think I made a mistake making this thread.

Nope not diversity that's idiotic. The notion that among chosen have to be an asian or black guy or whatever is stupid. Only the ones who deserve it should be there. If they're all white it's ok all yellow or black that's ok too as long as they're there for their performance not skin color

  • I've sort of switched sides on this issue - since 2000 3/16 Oscar Winners have been black, which is 18% out of a 12% population (and even higher than the percent of actors - if you want to complain about that part, I'm all with you). To give an example, everybody likes to beat up on Sweden because they actually promote giving women equal rights, but even there their policy is equality in aggregate. Not every single year needs to be 50% M/F, and just because the past two years haven't had black nominees doesn't mean much when put into overall perspective. That's only best actor, but still...

If you want to track 'discrimination,' it's because the Oscars favor either really popular films, or films which point to one of Hollywood's little fetishized issues (criticizing Hollywood cough Birdman cough or telling the inspirational story of a black, transgender, HIV-Positive, mentally handicapped victim of the Holocaust) it's completely overlooked. With best animation one of the judges wanted to nominate Big Hero 6 instead of 'some Chinese garbage nobody saw,' referring to two films highly praised by critics which came from Japan and Ireland. And as to popular film, the problem is the Hollywood impression that the majority white audience can only identify with a white protagonist is bs that has been disproven for decades yet people still focus on it. If you want to combat that, then yes I am on your side.

Basically, the Oscars really are a circle-jerk that aren't worth that much....

  • Exactly. Want to bet on which film is going to win best picture? It's the one where Hollywood/thespians are the hero. Fucking Argo won best picture, people. Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love for fuck's sake. Stop taking these ego trippers seriously.

  • Definitely not. There will always be arguments and different opinions, better to embrace it.

Yep, it would be cool to see more diversity, though I don't think there should be some kind of racial quotas in the Oscars. And to be fair, I don't believe that the lack of black nominees is the Academy's fault, this has much more to do with Hollywood's racial bias. Most of the mainstream movies from last year had white protagonists, so there's not much to be done.

  • Can't believe this much of a fuss happened here.

  • This is honestly the stupidest debate I've seen in a while. I'm gonna sound like a broken record here, but you don't automatically warrant a nomination based on your race. You warrant one based on your talent. And I also seem to recall more diversity in the past. For example, there have been several black celebrities that have won Oscars, (Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Octavia Spencer, etc.) None of them were nominated based on their race. They were nominated because they are damn good actors. There have also been several films in the past like 12 Years a Slave, Selma, The Help, and The Color Purple. (All films that had black actors. Hell, 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture a couple years ago. But it won because of how well made it was.) But yeah, clearly the Academy is racist.

  • I've been seeing this thing going around for a while and seriously, it's a bit annoying. Fresh Prince actress Janet Hubert was right when she said Jada was butthurt simply because her hubby wasn't nominated. It's so dumb to demand privilege just because you're black and it's racist in itself. Leonardo DiCaprio is yet to get one and you don't hear him calling it reverse racism or whatever. Marlon Brando rejected his reward, Jennifer Lawrence won one, it's not that big of a deal but if it's that important for them, Denzel Washington won one, Lupita Nyong'o and they didn't win that because they were black. They won because they were good and they deserved it. Every now and then some actors and some productions get unfair treatment but it's only problematic when it's for POC and a joke material or not even mention worthy when it's againts a white actor. They're asking for equality and this contradicts with what they claim to be standing for. They don't demand justice in the awards system but just play the race card to make up for what they lack. Will Smith is not Oscar worthy, if he were purple or pink skinned instead of black, he still wouldn't have been good enough for an Oscar. I'm so sick of people playing the race card for every fricking thing that there is nowadays. And it's really interesting that Jada whatever woman is concerned with the racism against black people but rarely ever cares about Latinos or Asians. A bunch of ignorant rubes laying claims to things they couldn't be bothered to work hard for and be patient because they know overly sensitive SJWs are going to back them up no matter what. It was a bad call on Oscar committee's part to raise the number of nominees just because a woman nobody cares about and her average husband are boycotting it and a bunch of people joined them in it.

  • One of the few times I agree with you. Award shows are pointless.

  • Honestly, I don't see this as a debate. I was just curious about people's opinions. I didn't think that a lot of people will be angry about this. And I don't believe the Academy is racist. I don't know why you guys think that and where that is coming from.

  • Once again, when I mean people of color I mean people of other races too, not just black people. I agree with Janet Hubert also. And with Leo DiCaprio, I'm still waiting for him to get an Oscar. He is one of the best actors of the movie industry.

  • You don't have to apologize, it's totally fine! I just hate seeing people angry because of a thread I made. I really starting to believe this was a mistake. I didn't think a lot of people would get angry about it.

  • Hey, I don't it's a mistake at all! Most people get angry about the fact that minorities are testing the lines with the extreme social justice behind them. The topic itself is aggravating but asking people's opinion on it is not a mistake, we all formed our own opinions thanks to being over-exposed to this for a while now anyway.
