Control + C

I don't know where else to post this but here, so if this is an inappropriate section feel free to move it. Not that you needed my permission.

Every time I hold control and press "c" to copy something on these forums I now get sent to the bottom of the page and have a new comment opened for me. While I understand that adding shortcuts for such things can be convenient, in this instance it's more so just infuriating. Layering the new comment shortcut onto the preexisting copy shortcut is not convenient. I often find myself being sent to the bottom of the page and having to cancel a new comment before scrolling through to get back to my place. Usually to where I was already trying to leave a reply.

In the past I've seen aspects of the site changed, such as the downvote button being removed, due to users nagging. So I'm asking anyone who has been inconvenienced by the layering of two shortcuts to post about it here. Maybe if we nag enough they can make the new comment one different than the copy one. That way we can have both without the need to cancel comments or having to scroll through walls of posts when we don't want to.

  • I second that.

  • I feel you.. it can be infuriating but I got used to it so it dosn't really bother me anymore

  • Haha seriously? Wtf does alt f4 start a new topic now? Cmon web team.

  • Alt + f4 closes open windows. Control + c copies highlighted text. I don't know if you're sarcastically agreeing or disagreeing with me, but either way, I don't think that layering hotkeys that serve two dissimilar functions is efficient or convenient.

  • He's agreeing about how counterproductive it is.

  • It gets on my nerves too. It's been like that since the forum changed to the current design. I don't know why but it doesn't happen always to me anymore, but when it does it's annoying. >_>

  • Yup.

  • THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!

  • It just started doing it for me today, and after the third time in an hour I had decided to make this thread.

  • Yeah, I really hate that.

  • Control-C is overloaded in lots of places. Try getting in the habit of using Control-Insert to copy, Shift-Insert to paste, and life will be a lot calmer.

  • I know I'm not the onlyyyy ooooooone

  • Oh thank God someone said it.

  • Would rather not, tbh.

  • No thanks. After a lifetime of using control + c, I don't think the muscle memory standard should be interfered with.

  • I've recently started posting to the forum so I don't know how it was before but I have noticed the control + C 'feature' and I have to say it is quite annoying. Especially if you are in the middle of writing a reply and you get bumped all the way to the bottom of the page to a new comment. It has caused me to post a few comment as apposed to replies already having not noticed the mistake before clicking post. I guess I need to pay closer attention, still annoying though.

  • Control + c becomes muscle memory, especially for people who use a word processing program frequently. I don't think closer attention is needed, I think that changing the new comment hotkey is needed.

  • It's just a little oversight, I'm sure now that it's been pointed out the devs will jump on it and squash this little bug soon enough.

I don't think the hotkey will actually do any good, I can press " page down" to go on button but control is mostly use to copy, my opinion is that is stupid dumping think to do, is like bind right click to go to your profile ಠ_ಠ

  • Having short cuts isn't a bad thing. Especially for people making a lot of posts. It's just the short cut combination the dev's have chosen is obviously the wrong one. They need to assign a different short cut combination for creating new posts and move forward. People don't get everything right the first time round but to have an active community that is quick to point out errors when they occur is a huge asset one that the Telltale Dev's I'm sure are glad to have helping them improve the functionality of this forum.

The hard part is finding an obvious shortcut combination that isn't already widely used for something else. Control + N is out of the question because that is already used by most browsers.

  • That's the goal, so I hope you're right.
