Thoughts on current YouTube Situations?

edited January 2016 in General Chat

Hey guys, I just wanted to know your thoughts on two of the current YouTube situations - one of which is how Channels are being terminated, getting copyright strikes and even their monetization(ability to get money for making videos on YouTube) - Here's a video from one of the Channels I enjoy mostly due to the Nostalgia Critic videos -

enter link description here

He explains the problem that's happening to YouTubers big and small and how they haven't been getting answers for a while from YouTube, pretty much explaining the power YouTube has on all the Channels and how they're currently abusing it on some YouTubers. There's a Part 2 to his video, his YouTube Channel is called Channel Awesome.

Another situation on Youtube is that The Fine Brothers are planning on trademarking the term 'React', the situation is that many YouTubers are afraid at how this will impact Reaction videos and anything with the word React on a video on YouTube, they state that it's to protect their own series of Reaction videos. YouTube videos can be used on Social Media such as Facebook without any credit given to the original content creator and they can end up getting more Views on social media than on YouTube itself, this happened to a YouTube Channel called JacksFilms, part of their reasoning for trying to Trademark 'React' is to protect their Channel from infringements. Here is the video The Fine Brothers made -

enter link description here

They also made an Update video that explains this more on their YouTube Channel Fine Brothers Entertainment. These videos have become infamous and they've been losing Subscribers - www.livecount.x10host.com

What are your thoughts on these two big situations occurring in YouTube right now? Do you think YouTube should do something about the random and unexpected things happening to different Channels? Do you support The Fine Brothers in their efforts to Trademark 'React'?

Does anybody remember 5-10 years ago when Google was being hailed as the progressive company taking on the powers to be and protecting consumers and their privacy rights?

"Cruel leaders are replaced only to have new leaders turn cruel."

I think The Fine Brothers have a very smart strategy. After all, remember when Trump tried to copyright the phrase "You're fired!" - now he has a good shot at becoming President, as we'll likely see in a few hours.

  • Welp, I don't want that guy to be president...

You can keep your proto-Fascist. I'll take Bernie.

  • YouTube has devolved into a corporate hellhole with as many ads squeezed into videos as possible. You can try to ignore them, but people are much more susceptible to advertising than they'd like to think.

Now advertisers are doing this really insidious thing where they put an annotation on top of the skip button, so if you try to skip, you end up hitting a link that redirects you to the product page.

  • I admit I don't get this strategy. All those adds do is make me pissed at whatever is interrupting my entertainment time, and that makes me less likely to buy whatever product is being advertised.

And I just use adblock at home anyway.

Why haven't the FineBros been reprimanded by YouTube yet? They violate copyright laws all the time. Reacting to a video is not a parody nor does it provide any necessary commentary or a critique on whatever they're reacting to? Channels like Channel Awesome and I Hate Everything are being attacked because they include copyrighted material, but they provide a critique on whatever copyrighted material they're referring to, so it constitutes as fair use. But no YouTube, by all means. Leave react videos and illegal prank videos online. I mean, whatever brings in the big bucks, right?

    Mod Edit: Removed offensive term.

  • Other people might be, but I never buy anything based on advertisements. I mainly just purchase food and not too much unnecessary items anyways, so when I see ads I generally tend to purposefully avoid the products in them due to the inconvenience.

  • I don't use youtube much for anything just for simple video things out of my own amusement, but this is still scary to me. Even with that FineBros thing, if the word React was really enough for a video or account to be endangered, then I'm glad I deleted my react trailer videos months ago if there was any chance of me getting hit by this. I heard people got strikes and their accounts closed is that true?

And here's a new video update:

  • And we can't expect a good presidency from Trump at all.

  • A government puppet?

Do you want to provide evidence for these labels or are you just throwing them around?

Despite all it's problems it is still better than any other video service I've come across. Speed/Performance and lack of ads is just far superior to anything else that exist. People complain about ads, but go to other websites it's often far worse. About Copy Right and Protecting Content, well that is just what happens when something like youtube becomes popular. It's easier to combat and ignore the user than it is to combat million to billion dollar Lawyers. They're too afraid of the possibility of a lawsuit that it is just easier to abuse their own rules than try to protect it's users from false claims.

  • The Fine Brothers are now officially bigger money hungry sellouts than DarkSydePhil

  • YouTube makes millions of all the Ads across all their Videos, thanks for the warning by the way, that's why I like to turn Annotations off :x

  • I wonder how much money these companies lose for all these Ads used on YouTube that probably have a small chance of people just checking the products out?

  • It's true, a Channel called I Hate Everything was shut down with no explanation, luckily it was opened again... still with no explanation, 'smaller' YouTubers are pretty much at risk and many have pointed out how flawed this system is, I hope nothing happens to my favorite YouTubers :c

  • In the end, YouTube's bad treatment towards it's user could end up making it less and less popular over time, some YouTubers have already began to mostly upload videos to Vimeo, I believe it was called. If YouTube doesn't treat it's own moneymakers with respect, they're not going to get much back.

  • I dunno it is such an internet icon, available on everything from a iPhone, Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Portable, that I don't see that happening. It is likely why they've been able to do what they've been doing without serious repercussions. Kind of like Microsoft, everyone complains about Microsoft, but darn, doesn't seem to stop Microsoft from doing stuff to make people complain about Microsoft and doesn't stop people from buying Windows, when there are things like Mac and Linux Around. Until people do most games/software will be Windows Oriented because that is where the money is. Cycle of I hate Microsoft continues. hehe

Think of video services as an OS, most popular one will get the most attention and take the biggest beating before it falls because it's just so embedded into the psyche of the internet.

I Hate Everything's channel was terminated as well not so long ago. Thank God it's back, because now I'm more angry at Youtube than ever! I wish there was an alternative video site as big as Youtube. :(

And fuck the FIne Bros plea to trademark the term "React." That means other channels like h3h3productions will be demolished by them. If that happens, I'm going to be fucking pissed.

Should be Illegal to trade mark a "Word." Personally. It isn't a name, or a company Name, it's a bloody word. It would be like Trade marking "The."

I think that if YouTube's big money makers, say PewDiePie, Smosh, Nigahiga ,etc. would start to campaign or at least start talking to YouTube about all the shit going down, we'd at least get some answers.

Apparently, the Fine Bros got their shit together and are cancelling "React World."

  • It is without a doubt ridiculous.

  • My thoughts on it are that YouTube is a broken, disgusting, awful mess. It's hard for anybody to become a content creator, and it's hard to try as well. Further more, it's made me worried sick because I, and 5 other friends just started a new YouTube collab channel, and we just want to have fun. It's fucking awful and sickens me, and if I didn't have fun making videos, My channel would be long gone by now. Copyright is shit, Uploading is shit, Sharing, Monetization, everything under the sun on YouTube is broken and shit, and I can only hope it gets better.

Update: Not really anything new about the YouTube situation, as far as I know, they have not addressed the issue thus fur.

As for The Fine Brothers attempting to trademark the word 'React', the backlash has made them decide to stop the trademark attempt, discontinued their 'React World' program and release all past content ID Claims - The Fine Brothers Apology - I got this link and heard the news from a YouTuber who spoke her mind about the current situation whose named ˗ˏˋ It's Becky Boop ˎˊ˗

The sticks have been extracted! I repeat. The sticks have been extracted!

You gotta love how they basically admit they were doing content ID Claims to "react" videos that are not "stolen" (or whoever works for them, like a lawyer potentially.)

  • Aside from backlash, they probably did it as well because they were losing subscribers by the dozen every ten seconds. I think they've lost nearly a million.

I believe it's at least 280,000 Subscribers, at least that was the last time I checked which was quite a few hours ago lol but it's ideal to also take note of how the amount of subscribers they gain per second/minute is pretty much now 0 in comparison to their usual amount, so add that to the amount they lost and it's significantly larger, at least in my perspective :p Also, I believe that The Fine Brothers may still have trademark 'Kids React', 'Teens React' and 'Elders React' etc. according to some Users on YouTube.

Edit: that's an extremely facile vision of American politics. The whole 'all politicians suck' line, which is only the product of a disabused but underinformed public.

Umm he's been pushing progressive polices since the 60s - while Hillary was working in Barry Goldwater's office against integration, Sanders was walking in MLKs march. Hillary's man who accused him of having the policy 'black lives don't matter' was in staunch opposition to Anita Hill durng Clarence Thomas's confirmation. Sanders has been pushing progressive legislation for years, favoring gay marriage far before it was even a common issue and, while I've only been following him since the 2000s, he's constantly stayed on point for years when it comes to protecting the middle class and reeling in the abuses of Wall Street. If you've been watching progressive media for years, he is Warren without the apprehensions of alienating the party and Grayson with the neccessary clout and maturity. Unlike Obama he hasn't taken any money from super pacs or Wall Street and has consistenty worked to fight against corporations in favor of the middle and working classes. I am an unabashed supporter of Bernie Sanders and the idea that 'some politciain saysing they're change America,' therefore the current politican is doing the same is frankly myopic and facile. Yes, if you want a third Obama term, vote Hillary, but if you want to shift the dialogue to economically progressive politices, you're only choices are Sanders and Stein, and Sanders is the candidate for major party.

    SANDERS 2016!

  • Sarangholic got everything pretty much.
