Is Rick even the same guy anymore?
It seems to me that Rick has become Shane +.
Whatever Shane would've done, Rick seems willing to do, that and more.
Does anyone else really even see the difference between Rick and Shane any longer?
I think the only major difference is that Rick has never gone out of control, not to the point that Shane did.
I think the only thing that's kept Rick from going completely over to the dark side is Carl and Judith. They seem to be the main thing that keep him grounded in reality!
That and Daryl. Of the the members in the group, Daryl seems to have the most influence on Rick, and seems to be his "voice of reason",
I wonder what Season 1 Rick would've said about the actions of Season 6 Rick?
Here's a video that details the Journey that Rick has been on since Season 1.

I believe Rick has become more like Shane but not fully. Rick even unintentionally quoted Shane "You either fight or you die."Shane didn't say that word for word but he said something similar.
I hate when people compare him to Shane moslty because I despise Shane. But other than that, I dont think theyre that alike. Shane had a very pragmatic view of the world where it was he willing to sell out anyone to protect himself. Rick does everything with the protection of the entire group in mind. He started off being this guy who believed in law, order, fairness, compromise and his ideals are getting slowly twisted as he experiences more and more trauma. Shane was one way and pretty much stayed the same way, only getting more extreme toward the end. I still believe Rick is trying to do whats right, thats why I stick with him in spite of some of his more questionable behavior.
He isn't the same guy. He's grown a lot, and become a completely different character than how he started. And I think that's for the better. He is nowhere near as compassionate as he was before, yet he can be compassionate in his own way, and a lot more merciless, but he cares about his inner circle, and he's willing to make reasonable changes and strides for the people of the group at the cost of even his own life. Rick has become an amazing character, and a realistic one akin to someone who understands that the world is cruel.
And as much as I love Shane, Shane was a psychopathic bastard who would have killed anybody who wasn't Carl or Lori. His view on the world was negative, it was that there was no good left and everyone had gone to shit. He had his moments where he tried, but that was drowned out by the world that consumed him in the end. What you have to understand is, Rick does this only when he has good reason. He has never once killed anybody, tortured anybody or threatened anybody who didn't deserve it, or didn't seem innocent. He did that for the group, Shane did it for himself and he did it when it was nowhere near necessary.
Rick will take matters into his own hands, and he's not afraid to. He knows who needs to die, he knows when people can be saved, and he knows when somebody isn't telling the truth. And that's honestly what I wanted Carol and Morgan to be like this season, but instead they're both stuck up pieces of shit with awful views of everything that need to be killed off pronto. Rick is... well, the perfect survivor. And whether people want to accept it or not, the people around him are growing as characters from his decisions and world views.
Daryl, Carl, Glenn, Aaron, Even fucking Gabriel are growing as characters, and people who can survive because of who Rick has become. Rick has left a positive influence on them, he's shown them what the world is, what it could be, and a way to remain human and compassionate. And now even Daryl, an unbearable, bland, boring character, is becoming like Rick in a way, and he's just awesome now. And I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty sweet to see such amazing character development being pulled in by 1 character, making the writing awesome. Even 6 seasons into the show, which is highly impressive.
But you know, that's just my opinion.
Of course he isnt the same hes spent two years in utter mayhem. No one is the same. Hes saner than shane was in season 2 but hes been worse than that at times
In the comics he admitted about this point that he only ever really cared about his wife and kids. Everything he did was with them in mind, not so much anyone else. I like Rick way more now than season 1, 2,3 and 4. his character was a bit dull or frustrating then
