Alright. Now that I have completed the game with each faction at least once, here is my analysis on one of them.

    BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL.

    Positives:

    • They seek to establish order throughout the wasteland as they continue their crusade to catalogue technology.

    • As a result of Maxson's leadership and their stockpile of advanced pre-war tech, they have the best chance of bringing order to the wasteland.

    • On top of this, they have a better chance at repairing infastructure

    Negatives:

    • In the words of Scribe Haylen, their methods leave a lot to be desired. They often forgo diplomacy completely in favour of brute military action. And will not bat a collective eyelid at rasing a town "for the Brotherhood".

    • They are racists, concluding that all species created by the radiation and FEV (Ghouls - feral or not, all Super Mutants, etc) are abominations that ought to be exterminated. Furthermore, their seeing synths as abominations of technology, messing with the sanctity of life that ought to be destroyed lest they try to kill all humans - while compelling - is short sighted.

    • Maxson's cult of personality is pervasive, while they do not worship him on the level of the Kim dynasty, it is still very prevalent indeed. In fact, an entry on Quinlan's terminal went so far as to call him the perfect man.

    • Maxson - while intelligent - is also rather deluded. He believed that everything the Institute is was a result of technology gone too far, While I do agree on some points, how do you take something so monumental for a post-nuclear apocalypse as sanitation, clean water and green and healthy plant life, only to then dismiss it as technology that has gone too far and then piss it away?

I will post one one the Railroad when I have the time. For now, I leave it at this.

  • Mega64 did a similar video.

  • Next one.

    THE RAILROAD.

    Positives:

    • Their goal is the emancipation of synths and the abolishment of slavery under the institute. By extension, they also seek to eliminate the institute that has for so long terrorised the Commonwealth.

    • They also seek the enfranchisement of synths in society.

    Negatives:

    • That is where their goals end. They have no mandate for humans or society at large. Their objective, while noble, lacks a broader scale or target towards which to strive. In the long run, they are there for the synths and nought else.

    • Their fanaticism is so extensive, that it has at times proven harmful. For instance, their feverous intent to free synths no matter the cost leads of large amounts of otherwise avoidable collateral damage.

Alright. Now that I have completed the game with each faction at least once, here is my analysis on one of them. BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL.

  • Another......

    MINUTEMEN.

    Positives:

    • They seek a Commonwealth united under the cause of rebuilding and mutual alliance.

    • As a means to this goal, they seek to construct a militia (modelled after the Minutemen of the U.S. War for Independence) ready and able at a minute's notice.

    • Once built up completely, the Minutemen have access to artillery guns, a massive reserve of soldiers and (depending on how you play) vertibirds salvaged from the Brotherhood of Steel.

    Negatives:

    • They are constructed entirely of volunteers. In the event that there was to be a falling out within the ranks, they could easily collapse (as in-game history has shown).

    • Preston Garvey.

  • edited February 2016

    And lastly....

    THE INSTITUTE:

    Positives:

    • They exist as community of like-minded scientists, seeking to improve humanity through the betterment of the technology designed to serve them.

    • They are the most technologically advanced faction within the Fallout universe, surpassing the Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave and Big MT, having produced genetically altered plants, artificial servants, new medicines, etc.

    Negatives (Where to begin?):

    • They are narrow-minded.

For one, they seek to only assist themselves, seeing the world above ground as a dying beast, best left to its fate.

Secondly, they refuse to accept the notion of sentient machines, dismissing constant evidence of such as a mere technical malfunction (e.g. emotive responses, self-determination, dreaming, the ability to constantly defy the three laws of robotics). They see them as tantemount to tools, regardless of how much evidence is weighed against them.

    • They toy with the world aboveground as if it were their own plaything. The replacement of humans with synths to guide politics, conduct social experiments and the kidnapping of individuals to use as test subjects (more next) are morally reprehensible.

    • They refuse to accept or consider the consequences of their actions.

Firstly, they experimented with the Forced Evolutionary Virus on test subjects extracted from the Commonwealth. Those disposed of where let loose above ground, creating a new terror for those aboveground to deal with. Furthermore, they seem to only have done this for the mere sake of it.

Secondly, their research into artificial intelligence has created the synth: a being so similar to humans that the difference is virtually non-existant (save for a syth's extended lifespan). The synths are constantly wanting to escape for the hopes of obtaining equal rights, seeing themselves as equal to humans. What happens when they create a synth so advanced and superior to a human, that they stop questioning why they should follow orders from beings that are equal to them, but rather why they are following the orders of inferior beings. In such a scenario, one could imagine an uprising resulting in the extermination or enslavement of humanity.

Don't forget: they're greedy and coercive, even toward regular humans.

They extract tribute at gunpoint from farmers who simply want nothing to do with them. Their argument that the Brotherhood protects those farmers is baloney. The brotherhood might protect them from the deep, dark existential threats like the institute, but they probably won't be sending in the Vertibirds to help deal with raiders. No potential to find tech = no interest. They also hoard already scarce resources.

Tl;dr: The Brotherhood is fascist scum.

Alright. Now that I have completed the game with each faction at least once, here is my analysis on one of them. BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL.

  • Under the right leadership and a good amount of luck, the Minutemen could create a nation in the Commonwealth. And combine that with an alliance with the Railroad, they might accomplish that.

Out of the factions in Fallout 4, the Minutemen feels like the only one capable of making the Commonwealth a better place. I can't bring myself to trust the Brotherhood of the Institute, because of the negatives you mentioned.

The Minutemen settlements are anarchist and awesome.

    • People voluntary associating with one another.

    • Collective work, no wage labor.

    • Common ownership of the farms, workshop supplies, etc.

    • No involuntary hierarchy

    • No racism or sexism. Speciesism needs some work, but eh.

    • A militia that's based on the principle of Mutual Aid. People get protected and in return they open their homes and resources to the Minutemen.

    • Free market but no huge accumulations of excess capital. Earnings from stores go into workbench for everyone to use.

Of course if the Sole Survivor is an oppressive turd and money thief this flies out the window, but still. The 19th century 'Boston Anarchists' would be proud!

  • That is a fair point. However, the people within the Brotherhood have either had obedience to the Brotherhood taught from an early age, or are enthralled by Maxson's cult of personality. Furthermore, the Railroad is made up of fanatics. And lastly, the people of the Institute are too well off to even consider changing things. The Minutemen are just a group of normal wastelanders coming together in a like-minded fashion; something that can be easily negated by disagreements within the ranks.

Then again, I could just be catastrophising.

  • (i say this only from experience. There may be other methods)

They gain vertibirds after the quest "With our Powers Combined". Following the destruction of the Prydwen via an artillery barrage, the remaining Brotherhood launch everything they have left attacking the Castle in a final, desperate move. Following the battle, the Minutemen salvage a handful of vertibirds, of which you can summon to allow fast travel even with overencumberment through utilising smoke grenades (much like if you side with the BOS).

The Minutemen can use vertibirds? Damn.

  • The last one is one of my biggest gripes with the game. It makes zero sense to let it all go to waste.

Lack of military training only applies to Nora, Nate was a soldier and therefore probably did have said training.

Technically you don't have to do side quests, but still, lol.

Everyone deals with loss in their own way. Sometimes that just happens to involve nosy reporters.

"I know, let's blow up the Institute without salvaging a single thing that they have learned."

I never understood how just killing all of them and taking over their lair wasn't a better option. It actually angered me, because the Minutemen could have used a lot of their tech to increase the quality of food in the wastes.

"I have rebuilt the minutemen into the most dominant force in the wasteland. I still have to run about the Commonwealth like a headless chicken for Garvey."

This is why I stopped playing the game, because he got on my damn nerves lol.

You need to build the Minutemen up and get at least to completing the quest Old Guns. After that, you need to become enemies with the Brotherhood (killing Maxson for his threads works well enough). After that, speak to Preston and he shall give you the quest.
