  • A lot of the math and science. Schools should really be more specialized. Someone who is naturally bad at advanced math shouldn't be forced to take several years of it.

What USSR stands for, even in school. We were told at the beginning of the year that we would get a guaranteed 2 points on the final exam if we knew what it stood for, so I memorized it. Then the Soviet Union was dissolved, and after Christmas break, my teacher told us that it wouldn't be on the final exam anymore. >_<

    1. Cursive
    2. How to play hot cross buns on a recorder
    3. Reciting the 51 states in the united states
    4. Reacting those States capitals
    5. Potato battery
    6. How to make Paper snow flakes
  • And everything else in school! :-)

Wow, I have never met someone who has seen the days of the USSR. May I ask, what was it like?

EDIT: Rereading your comment made me realize how stupid I am.

On the other side of things, there's lots of shit kids should learn how to do but don't because standardized test scores > everything.

    Every child should...

    • Learn to doing basic cooking and laundry.

    • Learn how to do basic repairs / building.

    • Learn personal finances / basic economics.

    • Learn how the government / civil society works.

    • Be enriched by art and culture.

  • So very true!

  • People need to learn geography too. No one knows where shit is. The person above talked about how it was pointless and they didn't need to know where the States are, but I think it's a good thing. A general aspect of education should be knowing where things are on the Earth.

  • Most of the examples are good things to learn. Especially algebra. If you don't know basic algebra, you're going to look like a real idiot among friends and co-workers.

  • A lot really, but the two major things are:

    • Agriculture: A subject that has no effects on our final grades, is so damn boring and teaches us nothing new, yet still forced on us.
    • Religion: I can't even comprehend why Religion is being taught in schools, everything you know about your religion was either taught to you by your parents or you learned it from your priests, why do they bother teaching us about it then? It just says up our time.
  • Agree completely. Knowledge of basic geography is important. Problem is most kids don't take well to rote memorization, so it's more difficult.

  • Depends entirely on the field.

  • Pre-Calculus or any high level math that doesn't benefit most of the population.

  • I am learning to distribute negative exponents arcross a problems in a equation. I don't see how it's important to life skills, but it's interesting.

Yes, but this ain't statistics. (12 • 56)-8 but the eight is the 8th power, not distribution of 8. Well it's the distribution of the eight power not the number eight.

  • a lot of what has been listed can be quite useful in everyday life, and more importantly not knowing these "useless" skills or pieces of knowledge could really limit your future opportunities, imagine the first time you ever learned the concept of algebra was in your twenties because you figured out that you wanted to work in (or just have a hobby in) a field that needed some form of abstract math, that would be really hard compared to learning it in school.

one thing that is/was useless is cursive, it is actively discouraged from being taught nowadays because with the same amount of practice print handwriting is just as quick and is far more legible

  • Was, but all that is holy and thankfuly What Soviet Union was...

So I can tell you it was crap, like tottal crap. Don't ever belive that socialist democracy is the way, ever

    • Religion.
    • Chemistry.
    • Physics.
    • Biology.
    • Ancient Greek (no one talks Ancient Greek anymore, why do children even have to learn it, what the fuck).

That's pretty much it. I just wish those subjects were optional, at least for Middle School (or Junior High School, I dunno). :\
