  • I have a lot of favourites. At the top would have to be Super Mario RPG, but other games worth mentioning are Shadow of the Colossus and Riven. I'll leave it that so I don't end up with this huge list.

The original Metal Gear Solid. One of my most favorite games.

  • Before DLC there were expansion packs, and DLC often functions the same way. Which is why I don't complain about DLC unless it's really stupid, like Oblivion's Horse Armor. lol

  • I like nowadays Gaming system and their DLCs

  • I don't see much to like about very obviously cutting content out of a game and placing it behind an extra paywall.

Just like today, there have been plenty of good games in the past. A lot of my top favorites are still on-going franchises or still around in general, but I have to say that the original Spyro franchise is among my top favorite "classics".

  • Super Mario 64 is still one of my favorite games of all time. I swear, it's a game I never get tired of because of how creative, innovative, and revolutionary it is.

  • Banjo-Kazooie is one of my favorite games of all time.

People seem to forget that these days, games(on average) are substantially longer and have way more content than they used to. Yet they still cost roughly the same amount of money(which is actually less after inflation).

Developers and publishers don't owe you jack shit and have the right to DLC, pay walls, micro-transactions, etc. Now, I do not like story DLC that has been obviously cut out of a game for the sake of DLC, but they still have the right to do it. If people stop buying it, they'll stop doing it. But neither will and that's life. Folks seem to be confusing what I consider proper DLC and "cut out" DLC. There are actually very few cases of them. The DLC has to have a large impact on the overall story and tone of the game.

I think the last actual case of this(and as much as I love Bioware, they're guilty) was Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you played the main game and not the final DLC, you unfortunately did not get the whole story nor the ending(which had a greatly different outcome and tone than the main game). This stuff is just dirty pool. Though, again, they have the right to do it. Sales have told them it's okay.

Games which have micros and obvious paywalls, I just flat out avoid and don't care how good the actual game is.
This is the way the industry has progressed and with the amount of content that we can now expect, I believe things are much better for gamers now than they have ever been.
I don't have a narrow view of it either. I've been playing games since Atari. I don't miss paying $100 for a game you could beat in an hour. Not at all.

The game I feel I have the most nostalgia for is probably Batman on NES. Fuck that game's difficulty. Kids like Batman too, damn-it.

Personally people who hate video games today are either buying the wrong video games, or never knew what a good video game was even before today. Also the issue with DLC some people forget, before DLC it was either an expansion pack of a cheap sequel that would of been made instead of the DLC. Good examples are just about every RTS on PC, including Command and Conquer, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, etc etc etc. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time saw the Mask of Majora which was originally meant to be a Dungeon expansion for Ocarina of Time but they turned it into a new game entire it nearly 100% completely recycled assets of OoT but has proven to be one of the best Zelda games of all time.

God for bid the Army Men World War Franchise, which the first game sold very well so 3DO just made a bunch of sequels I think 2-3 of them with complete recycled assets, they were not bad, but you can tell they were cheap. If that game existed today they would of just made some DLC instead of those crap cheap sequels.

I remember when Extreme Legends for Samurai Warriors came out, it was an expansion pack but in all respects is exactly like what DLC people hate is today. It added a few new characters, and 2 new story lines, as well as a few tweaks and improvements in gameplay. Sold for like $10 cheaper than a brand new game. But personally I can not play Samurai Warriors on my PS2 without it.

I think the issue is with DLC is it's a new "Branding" of something that has already existed, and it's something that people seem to LOVE more than hate so companies know they can milk it more than ever. Prior to DLC, expansions were not a sure win, or a sure profit.

But all I can say to that, if you don't like the DLC, don't buy it. If you don't like the practice avoid games or companies that have a trend of shoving it down your throat. Problem solves. if they start losing profits, and enough people get angry about it, they will change their ways. I've not bought an EA game for example for like 6 years.

  • DLC is fine with me as long as it's made post release and not taken out just to make further profits. I'm okay with majority of DLC's.
Companies like Rockstar have proven that DLC is a very effective way to keep players entertained for years post release. If done right, DLC is possibly the best thing that ever happened to gaming. I don't understand why the thought of more content for games you love...is bad. Just doesn't make sense to me.

  • Tekken was the shit for me back in the day, still have my PS1 although it doesn't seem to work now.

With DLC and expansion packs in mind, I'll have Mortal Kombat X as the main subject of my little rant.

You see, when the game was being hyped up, you see Goro said to be a "pre-order" only bonus character only for him to be a character already in the game just locked behind a paywall. He's fully functional and you can fight against him in a Klassic tower. Also, there's Rain, Baraka and Sindel being complete with movesets but still unable to play as them since... ? ? ?

There's been a couple of skin packs coming up, and some being included into other packs like the XL pack for example; it has the 8 DLC characters with other skin packs included which is a total rip-off to those who bought the skin packs seperately. Now I found this to be really dick-ish move on the devs' part.

If you buy all the DLC separately, you'll probably end up to about $60 - $80+ in price range, but alternatively, you can buy a single (emphasis on single) pack that grants you access to basically every DLC ever for the price of $25.

The fact that this kind of practice exists absolutely disgusts me, like, this is so wrong and just a plain middle finger to those new customers (myself included) and this is just one of those occasions where being loyal means that you'll get fucked later on. It's truly disheartening.

I'm happy that the people that made Tekken do not do paid DLC (except for Tekken Revolution which has micro-transactions).

  • Tekken was amazing. I remember I had a PSP when I was a kid, a lot of the kids in my school did as well, and both me and this kid had tekken. We'd play together locally, it was hella fun.

Good DLC are in a very small minority. It CAN be a great way to expand a game, sadly most devs seem to see it as a way to milk as much money out of a consumer as possible.

I might be able to dig up mine.

Edit: Found it, it was a white one from America, pretty poor choice of color I'd say. Still has Sonic Rivals 2, that game was my life.

  • There was this one game my sister and I used to play a lot when we were younger. We had one of those little kiddie consoles that you stuck game cartridges into. I can't remember what the game was called , but it was kind of like being in the national monster Olympics. (All the people looked like they were from Monsters Inc.)

  • Mine is silver, still working to this very point in time. It's like, 10 years old already and still functioning well.

I don't really use it now since I have an emulator on my laptop. Though, in several rare occasions I bring it with me whenever I fly via airplane and play while I wait for the stewardesses to bring me food or to wait for the plane to land.

If I don't feel like bringing it, I just make a back-up plan and download movies and watch them or just sleep.

  • Mines not 10 years old but it's pretty close to it probably. I usually take it with me when I travel somewhere or am stuck somewhere (I.e the hospital). My favorite PSP game would definitely have to be "Daxter". The platforming was superb, the boss battles were magnificent and the pop culture parody dream sequences you needed to unlock new moves were funny as hell.

  • These games from the early 2000's that are brought back up again are familiar to me, as if I've played them before.

  • God this forum makes me feel old and im only mid twenties :( people talking about psps and ps1s like they're retro, I need a nap. The bottom line is old games suck nostalgia makes you think things were better when in reality they sucked harder then you allow yourself to imagine because it was traumatisingly bad, I played original lara croft recently shudder

  • I just hate it when people let nostalgia cloud their opinion. Like people lick old games asses, they put down new games saying "The original Lara Croft was way better than this shit that's coming out now", uh no, have you played the original Lara Croft recently? The game makes my eyes hurt looking at it and makes me want to commit suicide with it's horrible controls, don't even compare it to anything made today. Same goes for everything else, stop letting nostalgia fuck you up the ass.

  • Pity that franchise as literally gone to Heck. Harvest Moon on the SNES, Harvest Moon 64 and Harvest Moon Back to nature were just awesome games. If you look at Harvest Moon games now, they're absolutely nothing at all like they used to be. In fact they feel more like My Sims (not The Sims) than Harvest Moon now. Irony aside if you want a good Harvest moon game you should picked up Stardew Valley. It is like Harvest Moon Back To Nature, Meets Harvest Moon SNES. In short it's automatically awesome. It's as serious as Harvest Moon 64, which HM 64 had more serious themes in it than BTN. I mean there is a scene in SDV that has you finding the Mayor's shorts inside one of the older lady's bedrooms coughs and ya he does coughs in his dialogue when you talk to him about it. I miss that sense of humor in HM games now they're like ultra ultra children's games.

When I played Stardew Valley I was literally blown away by the time I hit summer. It was everything an old school Harvest Moon fan could absolutely and utterly hope for. I almost cry thinking about it. I hope Marvelous Interactive gets their hands out of their Rumps and realizes that they screwed up their entire franchise so badly that some indie developer on his own made a vastly superior product which emulates their older games and made it considerably better.

Funny being a lot of youtubers I watch have also gotten into the game. When I mean youtubers I mean like War Thunder, Airplanes Tanks, Firearms/weapons fanatics kind. All these macho men grew up on Harvest Moon from the late 90s. Stardew came out and it's funny seeing a guy who's channel is dedicated to historical arms from swords, fire arms, and what not posting a gameplay video of Stardew Valley. Just brings that special smile when watching. Knowing it's touching the hearts of a lot of people.

  • Counts really. some games make all their money off the DLC. Rise of Flight is a FTP Single and Multiplayer game. They sell airplanes, campaigns, upgrade kits, customization kits, but not actually the game itself. For the quality of the product it's well worth it as well. As it isn't like say a MMO which they often insanely over price everything. Since they spend months per aircraft they add it's well worth it.

  • That was a good time to be alive. There are games that still have the quality that the oldies had, but not very many. Stardew Valley is a good example.
