Would You Rather Save Your Pet or A Stranger?

Depressing & edgy. I know. The thing is I've seen this question on one forum and most of the people said they'd rather save their pet than some stranger in Doug vs Carley situation. A lot of people said their pets are their family so it was logical to put them before someone they don't even know.

I personally have no pets and I've never had but I'd save a stranger.

So, your loved animal life or random human's life? And why?

Obviously the pet. An animal's life shouldn't be considered lower than a human's. I obviously care more about the pet so choosing the human just for "it's a human" sake is dumb.

  • If you haven't got a pet, then you really don't know how close you can get to it. I suggest getting a pet. Dogs are great. Lovably dumb, yet smart at the same time.

  • Well, thanks for suggestion but I can't really get any kind of a pet, personal stuff.

Though admittedly it would be a hard decision, just given the fact that people become very close to their animals, I would still personally choose to save a stranger.

Because regardless of how much I love my dog, a human life is always going to be more important. And there is also the fact that I can always get another dog. But that stranger's family can never get another him/her.

  • Would you then save a goldfish, cat, dog, over a child? I'm just asking since it's the same topic.

  • A stranger everytime no edge from me. You have be a psychopath to save a fish over a human or any pet.

I'm sure if anyones family and friends were in danger here and some dude saved a fish instead I wonder would their opinions be the same

  • Goldfish? No, probably not. Cat, dog? If it's my pet then I'd save it over a random child yes. A child isn't worth more than an adult either. Arguably the adult is worth more than the child.

  • So there are obviously some 'lives', or animals rather, that are more worth than other. Thanks for answering.

  • Pet, obviously. Why a stranger? Because.... Stranger Danger.

  • Why a stranger?

There are reasons why choose a stranger though. They are a human being, highly self-aware, and just imagine if your close famiyl member, let's say mother, died because some guy chose to save his cat. There's no absolute answer for this question, it just plays with your mind.

    Stranger Danger

It's a life or death situation.

  • I honestly don't know, I believe both lives matter and are equally as important, humans are not better than animals but animals aren't superior, regardless of my decision I'd feel horrible due to the fact that I've let a living being I could've saved die. I love animals and I love people, life is precious, it doesn't matter what the justification is. The decision is especially hard without more context to the situation and the choices.

  • It's hard to get attached to a goldfish, it's not like you see it staring at you every morning you wake up, you're not going to teach it tricks, it's not cute, you don't play with it, it barely shows any signs of intelligence.

  • Before making of my decision I would have to know what kind of person it is.

If it was someone who is beating his wife or a killer etc. I would save my pet without hesitation.

If it was a loving father/mother, a doctor, good person....etc. I would save that person, even though it would be painful to lose my pet.

Without any information about that person I think I would choose a human being. It would be hell of a tough decision to make and I would feel like a shit afterwards.

  • I read your username as "Violent_Ant".

But yeah, it's a tough question because it's a stranger, it'd be much different if you were to save your parent or your pet. It doesn't matter in that situation what kind of a person they are, because it's impossible to know. You either accept all consequences that can happen by saving them or go to save your beloved pet.

  • Human probably. I'd feel better having saved someone else's life than be selfish and indirectly cause the death of a person, knowing I could have saved them.

  • That would make a pretty cool username actually :D

  • Depends how much time I spent with my pet and how much I care about it. And what kind of person is close to death.

However, I'd feel better if I saved the person, cause it'd feel like I saved someone, which is always a thing. However, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't be sad for my pet, of course.

  • And if you saved your pet you wouldn't feel like you saved "someone"?

  • I would, it just wouldn't feel the same if I saved my pet. :\

    I'd feel more guilty, actually.

  • It's hard to feel guilt over the death of a person that you knew nothing about.

I'd never forgive myself if I knew my pet was in danger and I let it die. It's not that an animals life holds superiority, it's because I'm close to the animal, this is just another person.

  • That's why there's no right answer. Stranger to you is just another person, but they most likely have their family alive, friends, partners who love them as well.

  • Yes but we don't know their family nor friends. The choice would be harder if before having to choose we would get to see the persons family and get more information about them. But we don't, which makes you feel a lot less guilt.

I think it'd be horrible either way because you'd constantly be thinking how the death of that stranger has affected others around him. Has their family completely broke down? Is their lover so heartbroken they can't ever move on? Did they have kids? How will their friends cope with this? Guilt of not beign able to (ever?) know.

For me, not knowing would be a blessing. I personally wouldn't care as long as I didn't know, just another faceless person until I'm given information about him. The guilt would only strike me when the person got a face, by which I mean I found out about their life.

  • Well, you technically had a chance to save them so I wouldn't be able to feel so indifferent.

I'm a selfish bastard and even though my pet might slow me down in a survival situation, I'd still pick them. Additionally, I know my pet. I love my pet. There's zero promise that the stranger I'll be saving is even a "good person" who won't backstab or kill me in my sleep.

  • This is kinda unfair, but the pet.

  • I will obviously save the stranger, save a human life always give much more benefits than save an animal

    My pet.

  • No way in hell I'm going to let me Japanese Peace Lily die.

  • A complete stranger I've never met, nor care about or an adorable little kitty cat with big cutesy eyes, who I've known for nearly a year? Yeah...I'm picking the pet.

  • Human life always comes first, though I'd be heartbroken.

  • Especially when that stranger looks like Sharon Stone!

  • I mean, assuming some dude just walks in my house with a shotgun, and is holding a toddler and my dog, and gives me the option to spare my dog or the kid, I'll pick the kid. I'd cry like a bitch because I've had Bingo for eight years, and probably become "Dogman" to avenge him.
