So many games, hard to think of a list. Septerra Core, Venetica and the Imperium Galactica/Haegemony: Legions of Iron series on top of the list though.
I dunno why people say it was a disappointing, I actually enjoyed it and it is better than Uncharted 1 IMO. Sullivan had the best development out of all the uncharted games.
I might get lynched for saying this, but I think that Homefront The Revolution is underrated. People are way too harsh on that game, and I personally enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than the first Homefront.
I have no clue how popular this game actually is but considering that the recommended system to play it with back in the day was barely made, it's one of those RPG games that really should get re-released as some kind of retro title.
I think Octodad on Steam is fairly underrated, as it's a funny game to play but a lot of people are turned on by the short 3-4 hour length versus $15 price. The Deadpool game is also kinda underrated for feeling generic and repetitive, but I thought it was an interesting game to play (although I never did completely beat it due to a difficulty spike towards the end).
On a broader note, I also think that a lot of Telltale's older games prior to Walking Dead are underrated. I don't want to make this too focused on the Telltale games since I think the thread would be more interesting to discuss other underrated games, but even so, I just wanted to add my two cents and say that a lot of people overlook stuff like Sam and Max, Monkey Island, Puzzle Agent, Poker Night, etc, which is unfortunate as Telltale has some hidden gems even in their older library.

NieR (2010), by Cavia, for the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
Such a shame the game was never as popular as it deserved to be. Sure the graphics may be outdated even for 2010, but the art direction and design of the world, story and characters more than make up for it. Gameplay is pretty fun too, with having the ability to boost Nier's stats/weapon and magic stats by using "words" which you obtain by defeating shades. It's also a mix of different genres. For the most part it plays like a 3D ARPG, but there are times it becomes like a 2D sidescroller, or a top-down twin stick shooter and some of the enemies and bosses' attacks look like they came from a bullet hell shooter.
Just wanted to bring this back for a sec. Felt like mentioning this recently.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for the Nintendo DS (2011) and iOS (released 2012)
It's a game where you play as someone who wakes up, find himself dead and with cool new ghostly powers, and must find the truth by following the one person who saw him die. It's got really good puzzles, the story is delivered in sort of episodic format, with each chapter having a nice text scroll to fill you in on what happens now and what has happened before. The music is really memorable, especially the intro/end themes of each chapter. The characters are really unique, and the animations are suuuuper smooth. And it has a really great, engaging story that makes you keep guessing "why is all this happening?". Plus, plot twists galore. It's a really well made game that I don't think got enough attention, and we need more of this. hey a trailer!
Hmm...I'd say Defiance was underrated when it came out. Solid game, better show both underated. I also thought 1vs 100 hundred was great, for what it was interactive live game show on xbla. Just a great concept, thats underused today, I bought so many Indy games with my winnings on there. Oh 2009, I miss you(sometimes):)

Not to many people are familiar with this game. Even some of the Star Fox fans. It bothers me that they say that Star Fox 64 is the best Star Fox game out there. I personally loved this game's story and co-op multiplayer. And the co-op multiplayer. Ahhh those were good times. Me and my cousins would join me and we would just play continuously for this multiplayer. It had on foot, tank, and aircraft gaming mechanics. Also had really good maps with pickups. I think this game is the best Star Fox game in it's series.
Edit: I forgot to mention I was able to download the game on my gaming pc so I still play this game with my cousins.

Indeed, the game was probably one of the most original games I played last gen, and possibly that I've ever played. The story, imo, has to be one of the best in gaming. NieR also made me a big fan of its director/scenario writer, Yoko Taro. I will follow this glorious man wherever he goes.
Can't wait for NieR Automata, Yoko Taro and other key staff behind NieR/Drakengard 1 and 3 working together with Platinum Games for it has me pretty freaking excited. Finally Taro and co. aren't being paid by their publisher with a bunch of cheeseburgers.

I would call it overrated. It had a decent story but it was praised to the skies and already gets a sequel of sort.

Praised by who? Most critics and players gave it average score.

At this moment I cannot think of any.
So give me your choices.

If there is, feel free to "bump" it so I can merge the two threads together.

Octodad has been sitting in my library for a long time. It was a gift, too. I feel kinda bad for not playing it.
This is the best King Kong game I've ever played and it seems very underrated. It even seems better than movie itself.
Agree to the max! (except imo, Uncharted 4 managed to top this so... it's the second best for me.)
Telltale's Game of Thrones.

Freaking loved this game! Everything about it!
Yeah, the story and its aftermath with the Shadow language are pretty amazing. Not many storys have such a smart outcome.

Glad i'm not the only person who enjoyed it.
I find dragon age origins bulletstorm and vanquish to be underrated the ending to vanquish was quite shit though
