Another Telltale interview at Gamescom about Batman, Marvel, etc with Job Stauffer

Next year you plan to release a series based on a Marvel IP, what can you tell us about that, and are you conscious of there being too many similarities between your Marvel and DC series? It's a strange position for one studio to be working with both Marvel and DC licenses...

It's a strange position, but it's something we're very proud of. From a fan perspective it might seem unusual but for Telltale, we pride ourselves on partnering with the best story-tellers in entertainment – HBO with Game of Thrones, Skybound with Walking Dead, or different sides of the comic book aisle. It's nice to have these companies arrive at the same place at Telltale.

For the Marvel project, we announced it was coming for 2017. We may have announcement later this year on exactly what it is and when it'll be starting. As for if there are similarities: I don't think that's an issue. When you look at the different stories you can tell in the space of comics... obviously Walking Dead is a comic and that's an apocalyptic drama, then there's Batman which is a crime saga. Our story from the pages of Marvel will be very different.

So it basically confirms that the announcement that may or may not be at the Game Awards, is going to reveal the game and give a release date.

It sounds like it's coming out sooner than I thought.

This is a very interesting comment. Doesn't seem like it will be a MCU thing. So obviously not a apocalypse story (I wouldn't think it would be) and a crime saga, it's making me curious on what it's going to be about. Doesn't sound like it'll be a character like Daredevil though.

    Nice read.

Well, you got in InGen. It's the Game Awards then....

So, Marvel may be more comedic or light-hearted? (I really hope so because it seems like that'd be great for a Spider-man game... c'mon guys...)

  • I took that last quote as being not a necessarily a super hero game. Punisher? Jessica Jones? Who knows. I wouldn't mind a spiderman game, but there's so much potential for something more obscure. Hell maybe Howard the duck!

  • Okay, okay. I see how you would think that. Marvel would be different. Non-super hero protagonist. Maybe even an original one? Guy/girl suddenly develops powers and gets tangled in a scheme with an evil organisation, forced to make decisions that will shape him/her in the future... I mean, who knows???

  • I took that as them making a game that is tonally different from Batman and Walking Dead. Like, instead of it being a drama, it might be more light hearted?

They uploaded another part of the interview on a separate article. Here is another excerpt:

... So with TV you know it's going to be the next week, or you know when there will be a break. Something like Hitman is adhering to a loose monthly schedule, while Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was released on a strict weekly basis. Is this something Telltale wants to address?

That's a good problem to have. People are excited to play an episode and they're not sure exactly when it will go live. We know it's going to be four to six weeks, give or take, in between episodes, but the advantage for us is taking into consideration all the player feedback and player decisions. So right now, we've launched the first episode of Batman, the second episode will be early to mid-September, closer to the 13th, and we're already taking into considering things players have done in the first episode, and fine-tuning adjustments in the second and third.

To have a definitive date between episodes would kind of rule out the audience participation aspect of our series. Any time a Telltale episode is released, the next is in live development, and the last piece of the process is the player. It's not until the game is live that we want to put our final mark on an episode and respond to the audience accordingly.

Good old Job and how good he is at ignoring Telltale's tech issues (specifically Batman). Let's hope all the issues are ironed out with episode 2. Can you imagine if TWD S3 has this awful of a launch. There would be HELL
