What has life taught you about the world we live in, and people in general?

What life has taught me, is that there is not a person in this world that truly cares about you. They only really care about is what you can do for them. And once they have had their fill of you, they will kick you to the curb.

"People out there are always looking for an angle, looking to play on your weakness. They measure you by what they can take from you. By how they can use you to live." - Rick Grimes.

I thought that that dialogue was so powerful because it really does describe the world we live in - as well describing pretty much my own personal experience, everywhere I have ever been.

From everything I have ever seen and experienced, people in general are selfish, and really only looking after number 1. And when really comes down to them vs their friends, especially in a do - or - die situation, they will turn on you in a heartbeat!

And it seems to me that if you are really ever going to survive, that that's what you need to become. Nice guys, and selfless people just don't make it!

  • Life taught me that the world is both fun, wild, and amazing as well as shitty, disturbing, shameful. There are people are horrible and sick, but others are the greatest things that walk in this world.

  • Life taught me to drink.

  • I find that life is beautiful, but filled with mistakes. I tend to take approaches to life using my own life "maxims" one of which can be used to describe my general behavior and demeanor: "Be a cynical optimist." Basically, I realize that the world is a cruel, horrible place, but hey, at least my neighbor has a cute dog.

  • Maybe if you live in the world of The Walking Dead. Or, if that's what you are looking for, then that is what you will find.

Of course everyone thinks of themselves first, but that doesn't mean everyone else is there to be used and discarded. People do what they think they have to do first, and then work to maximize their happiness. For some, the "have to do" list is so long that they never get to the happiness part.

  • For a moment there you had me thinking that I had actually spelled it as "sliver." That would be an interesting and completely different meaning.

    I like dogs

  • What I've learned from this world and people in general is that not everyone is judgmental - not everyone looks at you and judges you, in fact, allot of the time when they look at you they fear of your own judgement towards them. I've come to realize that there really are people looking out for me, people that care about me - one of my friends told everyone in our little circle that he had a special love for each of us, in our circle of friends we all help one another, check up on each other and are rather defensive of one another. I used to think that no one really cared about me but I was wrong.

One of the things life has taught me is that, to me personally, my life isn't precious if I spend all of it on myself, so I try to do good and help people around me and as I've become more confident I've been helping out more and more(planning to volunteer at multiple places starting next week) and I think it's helped me become not just a better individual but a happier one too.

I've also come to understand that emotions practically dictate our own actions, there were times I felt like I was fully in control of my actions during an emotional state but I do still hold myself responsible regardless but I've learned not to beat myself up, per-say, over the feelings I have for people I know I'd likely never have a chance with.

Finally, since life and the future are full of uncertainty, there's no reason not to show the world who you are and take up every opportunity that comes your way - basically I've had an epiphany that made me realize I need to live each day to the fullest(in my way of course).

  • That though there may be a lot of shitty people on Earth, there are a lot more good people.

And there's no use letting the bad overcome the good.

  • basically I've had an epiphany that made me realize I need to live each day to the fullest(in my way of course).

    (in my way of course).

    ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I know exactly what you mean.

  • I think you are going too far now, there are nice people, but everyone has a different definition of "a nice person" so it can be a bit off.

What I've learned so far? Well, grudges aren't worth holding. Being pessimistic is a waste of time. Overthinking is useless. I can die at any given time and I should jusf accept it. People are interesting. We are like a river, just flowing and being present. Laughing is so awesome. I need to appreciate every single thing. I should. There is no mental limit, just physical and material. We are all love. Yolo.

  • Life taught me that there's no justice.

  • Life taught me that not everything is a happy story tale.

    Life taught me to drink.

    That basically says it all

Nothing is True. Things are not the way they seem. People are not the way they look like. All (or most) good things are a white lie.

Everything is permitted. People will do their utmost to have things in their favor despite how good or bad are the means.

  • Life is a beautiful thing that's sometimes tainted by mean and rude people. I just try to focus on being around sweet and friendly people and enjoy every day as much as I can. I also try to be helpful and bring laughs to people if I can. No matter who they are.

  • Life taught me the cold reality that not every story has a happy ending.

    BUT

Happy endings in life are completely possible.

  • There will be shitty people regardless of what you've proven to yourself or others.

  • "People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway." - Mother Teresa

Despite not agreeing with some other things she said. This quote has perfectly compiled everything I learned and more.

  • Being pessimistic is a waste of time.

As a pessimistic person I'm so triggered right now..

Nah but seriously, life has thought me that you shouldn't bury your feelings. Certain negativity isn't a bad thing as long as it doesn't take over your life. Melancholy can be comforting too :)

So is being optimistic. Falsely hoping for everything to get better and ignoring the negative things in life never helped anyone.

  • yeah I know but these do tend to go hand in hand. I just happen to be quite pessimistic but it's not necessarily just a bad thing. Sure it has its cons but I wouldn't say it's a waste of time. But that's just how I see it :)

  • For me its that people are less judgmental than I thought, but im lucky some people do live in snooty areas and dont have this luxury.

The world is basically one messy gulash. Some of it is just beautiful and smile making, the kind you want to protect cuz you cherish it. The other is just disgusting and ugly, the kind you want to dump in the trash.

We hear/see a lot of bad things every day, it's so easy to notice because it's more in your face. So it's easy to overlook the beautiful side of our world. That's why we fight against the bad shit, to make the world's beauty come out more.

  • I didn't say anything about being optimistic. ;)

  • Life taught me that people often treat you well when you treat them well. Those who don't are often more trouble than their worth.
