So what is PS4 Pro?

Can somebody explain.
Why is it better?
Do games need more time now?

  • A PS4 Pro is an upgraded PS4 with better hardware, so you can play games in 4K, watch videos in 4K etc,.

  • Is nothing to get to excited about. It just makes games look slightly better. No need to rush out to buy one if you already have a ps4, but if you haven't bought a regular ps4 then the ps4 pro may be for you.

  • Upscale 4K

  • Not really. Devs can still push the PC sliders up for a 1080p mode. Like what CD/Nixxes is doing for Rise Of The Tomb Raider. They've announced 3 rendering modes for it. 4K30FPS (likely using checkerboard rendering, so more likely 1620p - 1800p upscaled to 2160p), 1080p60FPS, probably around high settings on PC, and 1080p30FPS, using the max settings of the PC game. So any of these modes is superior to what you'll get on the regular PS4, which will liely just be the XBone version with mre stable framerate and maybe slightly better graphics.

And then you have Epic's Paragon, where they can push the assets much further at 1080p60, or Middle Earth SoM, which will use supersampling at 1080p. And supposedly TLOU is running at native 4K. Not to mention the fact Sony doesn't allow sub-1080p on the Pro, so no more 900p. And compared to previous footage, FF XV looks way better on the Pro, especially since it runs with a dynamic res on the OG PS4 (900p-1080p) with ugly AA and bad LoD. It's even worse on the Bone where settings are pared back even further, and it runs at 736p-900p, but hey at least it's still better than ARK or TT's Batman, both of which are sub-720p (Batman running so poorly is an absolute joke).

It's more likely that all AAA games will use checkerboard rendering, seeing as it's both free and built into the hardware, according to Mark Cerny, so we'll probably be looking at 1620p or 1800p upscaled to 2160p (look up the pdf Ubisoft made public regarding the use of this technique in Rainbow 6 Siege). Remasters, Indie titles and less demanding games could probably run at native 4K. And of course there is the bennefit of HDR. What I'd give for Gravity Rush 2 or Tekken 7 to run at native 4K.

  • If a game can be made to support 60 FPS while keeping the resolution the same as on a vanilla PS4, then an upgrade is worth every single penny if you ask me.

  • The problem that no one asked for it and it's unnecessary and If I want 60fps and more graphics I will just buy a PC.Now there is no point of a buying a console if every year there is a new one coming.
    PC MASTER RACE!

  • I've seen plenty of people online craving for better image quality in console (exclusive) games, and the Pro seems to do just that, based on footage we have so far, and based on impressions from people like Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry, the Pro seems to do just that, and he had some pretty positive stuff to say about the checkerboard rendering technique in place. Plus, over the last few months, I've seen so many people saying "Save us Neo" in FF XV threads, because of the shitty IQ and LoD in the PS4 version, and even shittier IQ and LoD in the Bone version, and the footage we have of it supposedly running on the Pro looks far better.

  • Yeah, it should be able to. That's one of Rise Of The Tomb Raider's rendering modes on the Pro. It's also worth noting that sub-1080p aren't allowed on the Pro. The only games that can't get a better framerate on it are MP games, seeing as that'd just end up causing problems for those on the OG PS4.

I don't think internet speed has anything to do with it.

No its conformed by Sony that Ps4 pro doesn't have a 4k blue ray reader, while the xbox one s does has it!!!

  • By default all games released after the end of October are required to have a Pro mode on disc, so it should. I can still see it using a dynamic res to maintain 60FPS, which is more important when it comes to a fighting game.

  • Would you pay another 400$ for a new console for a slightly better graphic and frame rate? I wouldnt

Right, and it'll also have VR support on the PS4 too. I'd guess it'll probably 900p60 on the Xbox, or maybe it'll use a dynamic res, and vary between 900p and 1080p. Tekken would probablybe more demmanding on the GPU, no?

Well, the new PS4 2000/Slim added 5GHz wi-fi, which should be better than on the current PS4. Pro will likely have it as well.

better internet download I don't think internet speed has anything to do with it.

  • Oh sorry

  • Ah, I see what you mean. So in versus games that are primarily running at 30fps on the vanilla device, a developer will not be allowed to add 60fps option if you are using the Pro? I can obviously see the disadvantage for vanilla users, so it makes perfectly sense to restrict this :)

However, shouldn't all versus games be made 60fps in the first place?
