Are there any good pre-Walking Dead Telltale Games out there worth buying?

I've been a Telltale fan since 2013 and today I thought to myself: "I don't wanna play just Telltale choice-based games. I wanna be a classic kinda person too."

So, are there any good Telltale games worth buying that were made before The Walking Dead Season 1?

Here are some good games I recommend:

    • Poker Night 1
    • Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse (Season 3 - but it's a good starting place for new people)
    • Tales of Monkey Island
    • Puzzle Agent 1 and 2
  • I second Poker Night. I too would like to try Devil's Playhouse, though.

Here are some good games I recommend: * Poker Night 1 * Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse (Season 3 - but it's a good starting place for new people) * Tales of Monkey Island * Puzzle Agent 1 and 2

  • The only other two I've played are Back to the Future and Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park is a total piece of contrived and poorly constructed shit. Back to the Future is my second favorite Telltale game of all time. So obviously I highly recommend that one.

    • Back to the future was fun, its even better if you've watched the trilogy
    • Jurassic Park I think is at least worth trying (if you get it on sale).
    • Everything Blind has said
    • Wallace and gromit was great (from the one episode I played), but its practically gone unless you buy a physical copy on amazon or something.
  • Obviously, Bone: The great cow race is a masterpiece.

No, but to be serious, the games the guys mentioned above are worth a play.

  • Well the great cow race is at least not boring drivel like the first game. Ooooooooooo.

  • You're absolutely right there, aren't you.

Who doesn't love a great cow race once in a while, am i right?

  • I loved Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People.

  • Yeah, I was gonna recommend Wallace and Gromit too, but as you said - they don't sell the game anymore, which is unfortunate. :/

  • Back to the Future is definitely one to check out especially if you're a fan of the movies. Tales of Monkey Island was quite fun also.

  • Poker Night 1 is great, but the lack of PC controller support might be a turn off. It's really not hard to map it though. A little buyer beware there since everyone just expects it these days.

I didn't really enjoy Poker Night and I've never played Jurassic Park or Back to the Future, however I can recommend the Tales of Monkey island and Sam and Max series, those were fun.

  • Although I didn't finish it, I enjoyed Back To The Future. It was fun.

(A little difficult sometimes with puzzles, but that's only because I'm stupid.)

  • All of the Sam and Max games.

  • Can you still buy it digitally?

Yeah, I was gonna recommend Wallace and Gromit too, but as you said - they don't sell the game anymore, which is unfortunate.

  • I bought Jurassic Park. I kept dying over and over because of the poorly-made QTEs that wouldn't work, so I refunded it. :p

  • I''m gonna buy Back to the Future and all of the Sam and Max games.

  • Two things to note:

    1. Older Telltale games (I do not know the cut off point) don't work on Windows 10. If you can, buy them on other platforms.
    2. If you are getting all three Sam and Max games, start with Season 3. Then, play Season 1 and 2 after in the regular order.

I''m gonna buy Back to the Future and all of the Sam and Max games.

    1. Good thing I play my games on Windows 7.
    2. Is that the chronological order?

  • I personally loved the first and second seasons of Sam & Max way more, I'd recommend playing all 3 in chronological order.

i'm so glared the people in the forums are stall untel SAM & max or they classics games. (Sometimes i thick the people in this community hits they older games.
every sense the walking dead they umm will t just hope they do more in the future.
persenillw Sam & Max are my favorites. expaelly season 2 when they had this time travel theme. that you mit bosic's mom. that joke of finding an husband but she changed her mind. for max's bad adited on woman. the good old times.

my advised for you is to get poker night 1 or back to the future for 1st timers. because SAM & max can be really hard as hack. now i do not under stand why bland sniper sied that they order games don't work on windows 10. now it is true that 10.0.10240 did not work however starting in build 10.0.14393 even 10.0.10586 works with all updates installed. so that info is inaccite but again. i am running Intel hd graphics so how shold i knew.

  • Fair enough, its definitely not for everyone. The only qte's that are impossible are button mashing with a controller, that's when I switch to the keyboard.

I bought Jurassic Park. I kept dying over and over because of the poorly-made QTEs that wouldn't work, so I refunded it.

Its' not, but I guess Blind wants you to start off with a bang (the updated gameplay style and control scheme) since the older seasons might scare you off. Dunno

    * Good thing I play my games on Windows 7. * Is that the chronological order?

  • Season 3 (Devil's Playhouse) is more in line with Telltale's modern games in terms of production qualities/cinematics and also has puzzles that would make more sense for newcomers. Seasons 1 and 2 are from Telltale's earlier days, and the production qualities are lower because those are some of Telltale's first games.

The chronological order is what you would expect (Season 1 to Season 2 to Season 3/aka Devil's Playhouse), but like Walking Dead: A New Frontier, Devil's Playhouse is designed to be both an entry point for new fans and a continuation for older fans.

Basically, for newer Telltale fans, Devil's Playhouse (aka Season 3) will leave the best first impression, as Seasons 1/2 run on an older version of Telltale's engine and have puzzles that are more abstract in logic since they were aimed for older point and click adventure fans/production qualities that are lower, since Telltale was still getting into the groove of things.

    * Good thing I play my games on Windows 7. * Is that the chronological order?

So the older Telltale series now work on Windows 10? That is fantastic news to hear! I'll have to look into this later, as there were some older Telltale titles I was wanting to replay or try for the first time at some point. Thank you for the heads up Micah! :)

  • Season 1 Episode 4 is worth checking out as a free download, but the puzzles are more abstract as I said, whereas Season 3 has more logical (well, "logical" -but you get the idea) puzzles with the Toys of Power having consistent rules behind them. Newer Telltale fans might be turned off by some of the more abstract puzzles in Seasons 1/2 if they don't get what they are doing. Even the puzzles in Season 3 that don't use the Toys of Power seem to make more sense at times.

As I said, I think it would leave the best first impression in my personal opinion.

  • Can you still buy it digitally?

It's the opposite - their license to sell the game digitally expired, but if you can find a physical copy to buy, you should be good to go! Telltale was more niche before the days of Walking Dead, so they do not have a lot of physical copies for their older games like they do for their newer stuff after Walking Dead.

  • No love for Strong Bad? Sigh try Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People, it's amazing.

I will say Sam & Max plays out in one off seasons with no real immediate connection with the plot until the finale, there's a theme within each of the first two seasons that the episodes follow, but season 3 changes that with an ongoing plot that ends with some kind of cliffhanger within the end of each episode(similar to recent Telltale series). Just something to keep in mind. If you're cool with all that go ahead and start with season 1 (I recommend playing the free episode "Able Lincoln must die" to decide if you want to start with the classic seasons).

Download link to episode 4 - http://download.cnet.com/Sam-Max-Abe-Lincoln-Must-Die/3000-2097_4-10780139.html (it should be on steam, but I can't find it anywhere for free, but I tested the download)

a reason why your not seeing the free episode of season 1 episode 4 is because 3 mouths ago. telltale made a stupid Business divisional to make it pied again. man more push back of they order games.
