Ghost in the Shell (2017) - Official Trailer

Comments

  • I really want to see this ;.;

  • Uncanny Valley here we come!

It looks like it's going to be an originalish story (different take on the Puppet Master?), but looking at the staff I'm not going to hold my breath. I'll still probably see it though.

  • It actually looks damn promising, and different. Different hasn't always worked right, but it looks like they set the right tone. Crossing my fingers it doesn't end up sucking and if it does, at least it will be good eye candy.

Looks like a regular US remake of Japanese film.

  • So many people criticizing this movie for casting a white actress for a character that was originally Asian. I'm willing to bet that if it was the other way around, nobody would be making a big fuss about it.

In terms of my thoughts on the trailer, it looks promising, but I'm not putting a ton of faith into it.

  • Any basset hounds? No? Then get lost.

  • Despite the lack of Japanese actors and nudity, this looks like a decent homage to the original anime. The atmosphere is on point.

  • The Major is a lesbian? Shock! Shock! Shock!

I honestly don't see the point in the film. Ghost in the Shell was praised because of what they were able to do at that time with an animated film, and how absolutely amazing it was, how few films really feel as raw/real in an animated form as Ghost in the Shell. Problem is, it's hailed because it's an animated film that blew away live action films. Making it into a live action film kind of mutes what made it great to begin with.

  • I'm confused if your first sentence was sarcastic or not. She's definitely a lesbian in the anime (although it's only a short scene in one of the series).

  • shrugs The 2nd TV series kind of implies otherwise if I recall. I honestly must of missed that scene. lol

  • Personally I wasn't a fan of the Ghost in the Shell anime film, but this still looks interesting. I hope it succeeds so that more things like this can happen and work.

  • Ironically, out of all the anime I've ever bought. Ghost in the Shell, and Gundam Wing (TV Box Set) are the only ones I ever sold, because I just didn't actually like them that much. I did like the Ghost in the Shell TV series though. The first film was just meh.

Being totally new to Ghost in the Shell (I know, I know) this movie looks pretty good. I'll see anything ScarJo is in, though :D

I'm a big fan of the original film (and to a degree, the TV series). This looks so insanely faithful to the source material, it has me so excited!

  • Whats that... @kenjisalk you are saying look for Ghost In The Shell: A TellTale game? ;) And yes it looks amazing.

  • Love the first film. The tank fight and musical score alone make it worth watching.

  • This looks better than I anticipated.

  • Because Americans whitewash films all the time, and even Hispanics get better screen time than Asians. I actually think Scarlett looks good in the role, but I do think the part should have gone to an Asian actress. Even though the creator of the animated film stated it was never implied that the major was Asian, they are not often represented well or at all in American films. I wouldn't care one way or the other if we were more diverse with movie casting in general.

  • Neither the author or publisher imagined Kusanagi as a Japanese woman. Her design doesn't resemble one either (as do a lot of anime characters.) So I think all these white washing accusations are unwarranted. And even if she was intended to be Asian, how is casting a white person any different than casting someone of a different race for a role intended for a caucasian person. Nobody threw a fit when Will Smith was cast as Deadshot or when Michael B. Jordan was cast as the Human Torch.

asians are not often represented well or at all in American films.

Sandra Oh, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Mako, Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu, James Hong, Daniel Dae Kim, Yunkin Kim, and Jay Chou. Just to name a few.

I'm not gonna act like white washing doesn't exist. We have Micky Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's and like half the cast of Cloud Atlas, but I feel like in this case, people are just searching for it where it doesn't exist.

  • I will see it but it's made me more hyped to watch the anime again tonight! haha

  • Just finished watching :)

Here's some things you might not know

  • Well, that was excellent... Hollywood has made me super paranoid like I'm a 4th grader they're trying to give candy to in front of a white van, but that looked super awesome - faithful to the source (which I care the least about), but visually pleasing and meaningful in itself. Here, have my $9.
