What do you guys think of Traveler's Tale's Lego Games?
This thread is more aimed at "adult" gamers, in their 20's or older. I'm pretty keen to play the new Lego Harry Potter Collection, and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. What I have trouble distancing myself from is the general target audience. I had the same experience with comics before I grew to accept my enjoyment of them, but it feels a little discomforting to know that, for example, someone might just judge me for having a Lego game on my shelf. Are there any fans of the games here and has anyone felt they had to justify their interest in any of these games, which are considered primarily for children?

I'm close to being an adult, does that count? xD
I think being interested in the game is justification enough for having it on your shelf. I know how it feels to buy a game that is more so for a younger audience, although, I feel embarrassed buying Toys To Life games as society depicts toys as being for children or childish individuals, I have no trouble buying games like Kingdom Hearts since I love it too much to care about the opinion's of others. I remind myself that these games are made by adults and that adults on the internet constantly play them, so why I should one feel discomfort in something they enjoy just because there's a specific audience they go for? I believe there are some studies that show allot of adults buy even 'childish' games, more so than children do and there's nothing wrong with that, even as a kid I thought that judging others based on what games they owned was ridiculous, still is.
Haha it counts. I shouldn't exclude anyone like that. My apologies. Thanks for the reply, and yeah that's a good point re. being made by adults. And I completely agree with you that judging others based on taste is ridiculous. Unfortunately it exists, and I'm way too self conscious to think logically when it comes to putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak.
I was a fan in my mid-20s.
I'm currently not much of a fan, but it's not due to my age. I feel the game quality has diminished since Marvel Superheroes. I was a big fan during their silent era. Star Wars 1 and 2, Indiana Jones, Batman were great, hilarious games. The charm has faded though.
Well, if you're currently uncomfortable with buying them and playing them, you do have the option of buying online and having a place to store things that you don't want people to see - after all, you have every right to choose what things you want to keep private and what things you are willing to 'share' per-say.
I loved the LEGO Star Wars games and I kind of know what you mean, those old games still catch my interests but there's something about the newer ones that don't really captivate me as much - I'm a huge Star Wars fan but the new TFA LEGO game hasn't interested me at all xD of course my opinion doesn't speak volumes but I do think that LEGO games have changed allot, maybe it's the open world? xD
Speaking of LEGOs, there is one game I'm interested in - LEGO Dimensions, I'm really interested in playing that game since it features a diverse range of all the characters I've grown up watching/reading about/playing, it's kind of like my childhood entirely captured in one game (like Disney Infinity was) but it's so damn expensive xD it's literally around 150 dollars here.
Conversely, I'm not much a digital fan. I actually like to have them on my shelf. Really, there's no win with me, as my girlfriend would say.
They're pretty good. Some of them aren't as good as others, meanwhile some of them are amazing, however despite how lacking some of the games can be, there are very few I didn't legitimately enjoy and only one of them I dislike.
Oh, I was meaning ordering the physical copies off an online shop that ships/delivers that's what I've been doing xD I like to have something physical to display on my shelf too, makes it feel less barren and nicer
That is probably the vaguest answer I've ever seen.
I'm not even making fun of it. I'm applauding how masterful it is in it's craft.
Amazing.
Oh right! That's actually what I did haha. Great minds and all that.
If you'd like me to bit a bit less vague, I didn't have much fun with Lego Star Wars III, The Lego Movie Game, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean or Lego City Undercover, and I disliked Lego Dimensions strongly. I think the rest of the games are great and fun as shit.
Lego games are the shit
I absolutely love the Lego games they are so much fun sometimes in the cutscenes they are trying to be funny but to me it wrecks the whole moment because when they are doing movie games
it gets to scary for some kids so they put something funny instead but to me when they do that it sorta wrecks the moment
The only games I've ever bought are LEGO Batman 2 and LEGO Marvel Superheroes, and I really love them so far. Are there any other ones I should buy?
I know what you mean. Some of the jokes are a bit of a let down but ahh well. Mostly, I love the hub worlds and how they redesign key locations from the films. You get a real kick out of seeing the places from your favourite films come to life, and no other games really come close to offering that kind of experience.
Really depends what you're into. If you don't like the franchise, it's likely you won't like the game. I remember enjoying Lego Lord of the Rings a while back, and if that's your thing then that and Lego The Hobbit are available (note that The Hobbit has not, and will not, included the third film's events, as it came out after the second film, and the planned DLC was cancelled a while back). Then there's Harry Potter, which just got a remaster for ps4. There are a few others around, Star Wars obviously...
I played Lego Batman, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, and part of Lego Indiana Jones at a friend's house. That's about it, though. I personally lost interest after a while. I guess I just got bored of them.
yeah the part were you said that whole experience thing well your very right there cause its true there is no other game that does that and even tho there is those funny parts they don't happen all the time and its not like they are wrecking the game or anything like that so yeah thx for agreeing with me HLeigh0109
TheAutisticGamer I know you said what games should I buy but I have a Lego game that you shouldn't buy its Lego Batman 3 its all about going to other planets and teaming up with
bad guys and there is no open world free roam thing you just travel to other planets and that's it for open world boring I know but the only earth place you can go to is the Bat-cave I'm pretty sure that's the only earth place but anyway just do not buy that game unless you are a fan of planets and that space stuff one good thing about the game is that it explores the lantern cores and brainiac so umm I don't really like those characters but if you do then go for it!
Lego games you should buy here is my list
1.Lego batman the video game
2.Lego Dimensions
3.Lego Avengers

and im sorry i know i said this twice but i forgot to make it as a reply to you
I kind of jumped on the bandwagon of LEGO Dimensions last year because they had so many franchises involved which I loved - Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Portal, Lord of the Rings etc - and I'm a sucker for a well crafted crossover experience. But I don't think I have felt the momentum as much this year, and much less fracnhises to interest me, plus the PS3 version I own had a terrible bug in the final level I could never get pass, and I'm hesitant to buy it all over again on PS4 right now. The new story packs with Nu Ghostbusters, Fantastic Beasts and LEGO Batman Movie just seem to be translating regular games to a Dimensions format for franchises which they couldn't stretch to a normal game for.
I like the standalone games too, LEGO Marvel Superheroes is still a favourite of mine, though lastly with the rights issues Marvel is bemoaning about which means that X-Men and FF characters can't appear in future games right now, we seem to be stuck with ones for the movies, which always seem a tad more limited, especially relying on the original dialogue. That being said LEGO Jurassic World is extremely well done in adapting the 4 movies. Haven't played LEGO Star Wars: Force Awakens yet, but I hear good thing about that one.
If Traveller's Tales announced a full on LEGO Doctor Who game, or a LEGO Marvel vs DC game, I'd be on those like a shot, no questions. As is I tend t get them when they're cheaper.
Dimensions really can be played with just the Starter Pack. You'd get access to all the core story levels and three adventure worlds - DC via Batman, Lord of the Rings va Gandalf and LEGO Movie vs Wyldstyle, plus the Batmobile which is a great driving vehicle. But the fact a fair bit of content will be locked off might bother you, so be aware of that. I would rec getting a flying character too, best option being Wicked Witch (since she's cheap, she'll get you access to Wizard of Oz adventure world too, and has Destroy Silver LEGO and Mind Control abilities which are often useful, along with magic which Gandalf also has).
No you didn't.
I think the lego games are pretty good only problem is once everything is done it does get boring im planning on getting lego dimensions soon
What other figures would you recommend? Especially to save money but get the most content?
I guess it depends which franchises you're interested in? The most important things to know are accessing adventure worlds and battle arenas (which is a new thing for Year 2) and the type of packs you can get. (FYI this might be a bit of a read so bear with me.)
Adventure Worlds are like hubs which have plenty of little missions and locales to explore, some of which requires certain characters to reach hard to get places, so for example if you visit the DC Adventure World you'd want a swimming character like Scooby Doo, Cyborg or a Cyberman because you won't be able to reach Atlantis otherwise. Luckily swimming is a fairly common ability (though none of the main characters you start with have it) whilst others are pretty unique, for example Unikitty from the LEGO movie is the only character who can destroy rainbow bricks, which you might need access a certain level area or two. But if you want to access EVERY adventure world/hub (which by the end of Year 2 will be 30!), you will need at least one character from that franchise to open the gate for it. Once you're there though you're welcome to mix and match as you want.
Battle Arenas are a new addition in Year 2 which introduces competitive play offline for up to 4 players, and I gather there is more than one Battle Arena for certain Year 2 franchises and are specific to certain packs or characters. I haven't played any of those yet since I don't know any Year 2 characters at present. But think a bit like Super Smash Bros? You can play with AI too.
So in terms of packs there are five to understand for LD - the Starter Pack, Story Packs (new for Year 2), Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs. I'll mention which ones I own and which I like.
Starter Pack: Needed to play the game! You have a specific game disc but otherwise everything else is universal to any console. You'll get the bricks for the Portal to bring characters into play and do game changing things to them with, three starting characters with Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle and one vehicle, the Batmobile. You will have access to the main story campaign which is 14 levels long and mostly manages to touch on every franchise involved in Year One. You can access three Adventure Worlds which are DC (via Batman) Lord of the Rings (via Gandalf) and LEGO Movie (via Wyldstyle) though certain areas will be hard to reach without a swimming or flying character or vehicle to do such things. Levels also have areas you can't get to without abilities or devices. But it's a good starting point.
Story Packs: New for Year 2, these are basically replacing the need to update your portal, which is nice. There are three planned for with Nu Ghostbusters, Fantastic Beasts and LEGO Batman Movie. You get one or two new characters (Abbie Yates for Nu Ghostbusters, Newt Scalmander for Fantastic Beasts and Robin and Batgirl for LEGO Batman) a new vehicle, six new story levels which create a mini campaign based on the movie (but you can take any of your owned characters in too) a new adventure world, a new battle arena, and a new set of bricks to create a new theme for your portal pad. Don't own any of these but they're basically the big expensive additions with a lot of new content.
Level Packs These are good purchases since you get a fair amount of content for a decent price. Level Packs give you a new character, two vehicles or gadgets and a new bonus story level based on the franchise in question, plus access to an adventure world (and battle arena if year 2) if it's your first character from the franchise in question. Some level packs are the only way to play certain franchises since there's only one playable character. So far there are level packs for Back to the Future, Portal 2, Simpsons, Doctor Who, Classic Ghostbusters and Midway Arcade Games, and then for Year 2 we have Adventure Time, Mission Impossible, Sonic the Hedgehog and a couple of others planned. I have the Back to the Future, Doctor Who and Portal packs and these are all very good! BTTF level is a tad short but the adventure world is awesome and you get Marty McFly, the Delorean and the Hover Board. The DoctorWho one allows you to play as ANY Doctor and use K9 and the TARDIS (plus the console room changes for each Doctor). definitely MY FAVOURITE PACK! Portal 2 one is basically a sequel to the game story with a playable Chell and a Sentry and Companion Cube for gadgets and well handled.
Team Packs These are usually priced the same as Level Packs and effectively remove the story level and give you an additional character instead, but otherwise work the same. There are ones for Jurassic World (Owen Grady and ACU Trooper with Raptor and Gyrosphere Vehicles), Scooby Doo (Scooby and Shaggy, Mystery Machine Vehicle and Scooby Snack Gadget), DC Villains (Joker and Harley Quinn with Joker Copter and Harley Mobile vehicles) and Ninjago, with Harry Potter, Adventure Time and Gremlins for Year 2 along others planned. I just have the Jurassic World one and it's good, Gyrosphere is useful for puzzles, Owen is a gun character which helps in puzzles, plus he can hack vines and track which are useful abilities, and the Jurassic World hub is well done.
Fun Packs The most diverse and cheapest packs, lots of these! These just give you a new character and vehicle or gadget, with access to an adventure world and battle arena (if year 2) via that character, so it's a cheaper way of accessing adventure worlds if there's the option to. I have Wicked Witch (with flying monkey), Cyborg (with giant robot mech suit), Wonder Woman (with invisible plane), Unikitty (with her cloud car) and Krusty the Clown (with clown bike) via these. Krusty lets me access the Simpsons Adventure World without needing the Level Pack with Homer (which since it's apparently not that great is no bad thing). Wicked Witch and Wondy can both fly by themselves which is handy.
One important thing to add is that all vehicles and gadgets can be REBUILT in three different ways! This means that you can unlock the ability to change the look of them and get new abilities as a result, which means you don't have to get everything.
Hope that all made sense! Ask if it didn't, lol!
Cybermen can swim? also, I guess Unikitty would be a good character to get for her unique ability?
Not entirely interested in a battle arena to be honest I think it would be cool if they had multiple multiplayer mini-games, or do they have that already? xD Just minigames like the ones from other LEGO games
So I'll need a swimmer and a flyer, can Unikitty fly? xD
Oh, by the way, what happens when a character from one franchise goes to another franchise world? Do they comment on the world or the other characters? Are there interactions? Cause I think that would make it really cool!
The Doctor Who one sounds like it's the best one! I think if I do get LEGO Dimensions, it will most likely be the first pack I buy after, also, what locations are there for the Doctor Who story level? Does it follow the latest Doctor's adventures?
Jurassic World sounds like a nice one, is there a level for it that has dinosaurs? Also, what are the Ninjago characters like?
So, is there a difference between what is accessed by Fun Packs and Level Packs? Is it like Level Packs progress the story whilst Fun Packs just add free roaming in the world?
Oh wow, that's really cool and provides more of an incentive for me to buy it - I actually really enjoy building and rebuilding stuff xD
Thanks so much for this plethora of in-depth information, it shall definitely be useful!
Lego games are the shit
Apparently so! I don't own the Cyberman at present so I don't know how he exactly swims, but he's the other Doctor Who character outside the Doctor you can by and play as, plus he has a Dalek for a vehicle (which is a shame as I would have LOVED to play as a Dalek and EX-TER-MIN-ATE everything.) If you're a fan of Unikitty and want to destroy Rainbow bricks she's a good choice, though you won't get any extra adventure world with her as you'll already have Wyldstyle to access LEGO Movie Hub world.
Battle Arenas are just for Year 2 characters (though Year 1 characters can play in them too) and are optional to use anyway. I think each map you unlock has 4 modes of play? Like capture the flag and objective mode and stuff. Brian Blessed is the narrator for Battle Arena too, which amuses me.
Unikitty has the Cloud Car for a vehicle which she can useto fly but cannot fly herself. She can however get especially angry like she does in the movie and... well you'll see.
Oh characters comment on all sorts of things! Travelling to new worlds, talking to each other in specific cases or using each other vehicles - the Doctor for example has some choice words about Doc Brown's own time machine for example! So that can be pretty fun.
The Doctor Who pack is definitely the best in my opinion. You'll already have a story level in the main game for Doctor Who where you'll fight some infamous monsters... big hint: don't blink. But the Doctor Who bonus level is great! You play as the 12th Doctor as he takes on the Daleks, travelling with the TARDIS to London at three points in time via TARDIS pads you can find in other levels, and you'll get to visit Trenzalore and Skaro too! The adventure world is massive with six different sections - Modern London, Victorian London, Skaro, Telos, Trenzalore and Mars. And plenty of cameos! Plus the best bit? PETER CAPALDI DOES THE VOICE! Yes, you have the man himself playing his LEGO counterpart, along with Jenna Coulson as Clara, John Barrowman as Captain Jack, and Michelle Gomez as 'Missy'. And there are a ton of references to all eras of Doctor Who as well! Getting to play as any of the Doctors via regeneration and access their console rooms with the original music? Icing on the cake. You can even fly about in the TARDIS anywhere you want!
Jurassic World is a team pack so sadly no story level, since of course it had its own LEGO game just before Dimensions came out, but the adventure world has plenty of missions with Claire and Doctor Wu and the like, so you'll have plenty to do if you were a fan of the film. Plus Chris Pratt reprises his role as Owen (and Emmett from the LEGO movie and yes, they do mention the similar looks and voices, lol). You can even have a Raptor race!
Level Packs basically have a bonus level, akin to a regular sort of level you'd have in a normal LEGO game but with Dimensions mechanics and utilising the skills of the Level Pack's character instead of the Starter Pack's ones. Fun Packs tend to just expand your roster and if it's a new franchise give you access to an adventure world via that character. Think of a character as a 'key' to access a specific world they're connected to. You're still ok to bring other characters from other franchises in too! You can have up to seven characters, vehicles or gadgets on the portal pad at any one time. Hope that makes sense.
Oh yeah, if you LOVE building stuff in LEGO you will love LEGO Dimensions, it adds a whole level of interaction in the game that you're building the portal for the characters and then the Batmobile... so cool.
Glad to help anyway, let me know if you need any more info!
EDIT: Forgot your question about Ninjago! I don't know the series very well but there are 7 characters from it to buy and play as, including a team pack with Kai and Cole, I'm think they're called? Nya, Master Wu, Zane and a couple more. They all have the Spinjitzu ability too, which is used in some cases, and while there's no bonus level you get a Ninjago themed level in the story mode. Legend of Chima is also in the game as the other original LEGO property, and I know LEGO City Undercover is coming as well.
Might be good to get Unikitty still since she's the only one with that power - which makes me wonder, are there any other characters with exclusive abilities? Also, a Cyberman using a Dalek as a vehicle? xD As for the battle arena, hmm, that sounds cool, kind of reminds me of the LEGO Ninjago game on the DS! Oooh, sounds like Unikitty will be a fun character xD and I suppose the Cloud Car is all that is really required for sky zones and other in-air stuff? Or are characters specifically required?
Oooh, that's really cool! I love that kind of stuff! It's the small things that make me smile most of the time lol and another question, do each of the different Doctors have their own voice? Oh and that makes me think... can you use the same character twice in-game (as in by putting them on the pad)? Oh yay... Weeping Angels... they don't terrify me at all... ;-; Wow, the Doctor Who Pack sounds crazy in-depth... and it's the same prize as it's counterpart packs?! Yep, solidifies my decision xD Hopefully the DW Packs haven't all sold out yet lol also, I did some scoping, is it true that you can visit The Flintstone's and the Jetson's worlds with Doctor Who as well?! Cause if so, that'd be amazing! Also, are all of the characters voice acted by their original VA? I always find it makes the character feel more like, well, the character when they have the same VA.
OMG Raptor Races? AWESOME! Any other Dinosaurs fit for racing? xD Also, I keep forgetting that Chris Pratt voices Emmett as well that's pretty cool that they make references to their VA lol Yeah, it makes sense, thanks for the explanation! 7 characters at a time is pretty cool! That's more than the other toys to life games xD So it's a Level Pack adds a level and a individual characters just unlock the area for exploration pretty much? That's cool! The rebuilding stuff is also pretty unique I think, it makes the game feel more 'dynamic' in a way, if that makes sense? And will do! xD
Oh, that's really neat! I actually like Ninjago and Chima so it will be fun to play with those characters (especially since I don't think they've ever had an official console game before?) Sorry for the thousands of questions! xD One more to add - which characters have the most abilities? Or, which 7 characters/vehicles/gadgets could get your through the entire game whilst also letting you unlock everything? IF such a combo of figures is possible?
Off my head, I think Aquaman can interact with Atlantis devices, though it might be a water power he shares with Krusty (who can squirt water from his flower or something) but those are the only two I think have that ability. The Cyberman and Doc Brown have an ability to create a small device to move through tubes (a Cybermat for the Cyberman and a mini delorean for the Doc). And only Ninjago character have spinjitzu and only Legend of Chima characters (Laval, Cragger and Ernis) have the Chi ability. I will stress that ANYONE can use any gadget or vehicle in the game, so if you want the Doctor to ride a Raptor or Batman in the Mystery Machine, you can do that. There are lots of flying vehicles so don't worry if you don't have the Cloud Car, and many driving vehicles can be rebuilt to swim or fly in certain models.
Peter provides all new lines for the 12th Doctor, whilst the past Doctors all use archive audio from the TV show, but their mannerisms can be all quite different! The Second Doctor might pull out his recorder and play a tune, the First Doctor holds his lapels when walking, Six and Seven sometimes pull out their umbrella and so forth. Yes, if you have two of the same character for any reason you can have them on the pad at the same time (they will actually comment about it). It does have a crazy amount of content, yeah, clearly Traveller's Tales are big Doctor Who fans, and YES! You can visit the Jetsons and Fintstones, it's two secret areas in the Simpsons levels, though you'll need to have the TARDIS and the Simpsons Level Pack in the case of the Jetsons one. No playable characters from those franchises though. There might also be a way to visit the Titanic, if you know where to look... Not everyone sadly, but a nice amount. Christopher Lloyd and Michael J Fox come back to voice Doc Brown and Marty though, which is awesome, and the Portal stuff has the real GLADOS and Wheatley too!
Just the Raptors I'm afraid, it's part of a mission I think. But there's still plenty to do in the Jurassic World hub.Yeah it's a lot of stuff you can have at once on screen. Level Packs greatly expand your content via a new level and likely access to adventure worlds, though fun packs can do this too if it's a character from a franchise you haven't had characters for yet. So if you pick up Doc Brown without getting the Back to the Future Level Pack, you can still access the BTTF adventure world via Doc!
I think you really just need to get the starter pack, plus any pack you feel interested in, and go from there. You wouldn't need every character to access all the areas, though year 2 has introduced new abilities for areas and puzzles, so it's complicated. Best bet is check the LEGO Dimensions Wikia page since that always tells you which character can do what.
Oh wow, that's really cool! And the part about vehicles being upgraded to have swimming and flight capabilities? It makes them even more flexible! xD And lol, the Doctor riding a Raptor, funnily enough I wouldn't be surprised if he actually did xD OMG so much depth for a character - or should I say, 13, wasn't it? I'm guessing they use the Doctor from the film as well? And they comment when there's a duplicate? RESISTING URGE NOT TO BUY SAME FIGURE TWICE Seriously, you're making me love this game before even buying it xD Do the secret worlds have any missions as well by the way?
Wow, that's really cool... but, I kinda want them all xD I'm a sucker for collections and I want to have all the content Now that I've finally got a good paying job, I might be able to afford it! xD But I'll be getting Doctor Who, Unikitty, The Wicked Witch of the West, Cole, Laval, Sonic, Scoody Doo and Lumpy Space Princess before any others I'll be sure to scour the wikia pages often xD especially once I have the game!
Thanks so much for everything! I just have a few more things to ask - are there any tips you have for a first time player? Also, which are your top 10's that you'd recommend to get? Thanks again! And sorry for nagging you with questions! xD
Yeah, it depends on if the model allows for a flying or diving machine build, but you should always be able to tell. Riding the raptor is fun whoever is on its back (and you have the opportunity to unlock upgrades to change its colour, or have it shoot venom like a Spitter from Jurassic Park!) All of the Doctors are playable, including Paul Mcgann ("I'm the Doctor, but probably not the one you were expecting.") and John Hurt's War Doctor ("What I did, I did without choice, but in the name of peace, and sanity.") There are videos on YT to check most of the dialogue out if you don't fancy buying all of them, though! If you mean secret areas there's generally one in each level, and you tend to find a lot of builder kits to collect. Plenty of missions in the adventure worlds, though.
I wish you luck, cause there's 44 characters in year one alone, and more aplenty for Year 2. Nice starting selection though! I am tempted to get the Mission Impossible, A-Team, Sonic and LEGO Batman Movie stuff when I get the chance.
My best advice is to start with the main story levels since they teach you all the usages of the portal pad and the three core characters, and then check out the adventure worlds when you want a change, otherwise just explore! One other thing... each adventure world has a red brick to collect which let's you buy a special upgrade, and you should definitely get the Lord of the Rings one as soon as possible. Though it costs a million studs it lets you double you stud total when you're collecting them, so worth it to get studs quicker! To find it you need to locate a robot which will fly away from you and catch it in the time shown, then you can buy the red brick when you have the funds.
I think the LEGO games are a little repetitive, but very entertaining. My only problems are that they take forever to get 100%. And that the character selection doesn't tell us each playable characters' abilities.
Awesome! Thanks so much for all the advice! It shall definitely be useful when I begin playing the game
I generally prefer the older Lego games, though those don't run well on newer PCs. I like a few of TT's games, though most of them aren't really my thing. As far as enjoying stuff for children goes, I think people are becoming less and less aware of what they want in their entertainment- especially those who try to grapple with their childhood and their desire for "maturity" in what they invest their time into. Honestly, I still enjoy plenty of stuff I loved when I was a kid, and now that I'm older it's easier to see why. When it comes to what I experience in fiction, I generally look for stuff that makes me happy, and such content usually comes in several forms, especially including things created for children. I still have my Lego collection that I've been building on (no pun intended) for over ten years. It's all about your personal tastes.
