Who Should I Send an Email to Regarding Copyright?

I am trying to obtain permission to have a couple of Tshirts made of fanart of the "Bro" scene from Tales from the Borderlands. I don't want to sell them or anything like that. I just would like to have two made, one for me and one for my fiance.

I already have the fanart's creator's permission, but so far have had no luck with Telltale. I have sent an email to info@telltalegames.com on November 23rd with no reply. Is that even the address I should be using?

I'm sort of in a hurry, as these shirts are planned to be Christmas presents.

Thank you in advance for any help.

  • As long as they're for yourself I think you'll be fine. The chances of telltale finding out are 0 and if they do, they're not going to go after you for making a Tales shirt for Christmas. Go ahead and order them.

  • Considering that would just be fan content and you arnt selling them for money, then there is no problem with making two custom T-shirts for you and your fiance, you dont need permission from Telltale :P

  • Well, that's basically my attitude towards it, too. The site won't make them without permission from the license holder, though.

  • No idea what site you are using, but it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal to just lie. If you're not selling it, and its just for you because you want a shirt from a game you love, but there is no shirts for that game, I dont see it hurting anyone.

Or simply try and find another site/place who will just print the design on the shirt and not ask for copyright approval, if you know a local embroidered, Id go there.

  • I suppose you could ask the Support team by Submitting a Request, and selecting "Other" in the games/platforms sections. I mean, Support probably won't know directly but I imagine they could forward your question to the appropriate people.

  • I just want to say that this is beyond cute. Hope you can make it happen

  • You could try dmca@telltalegames.com, which isn't really the address to write asking for copyright permission (it's the one where you complain that Telltale is violating your own copyright). but it might go to the same people. Or find another place to make your T-shirts that will accept the artist's permission as OK to make just 2 T-shirts.

  • Then find a different site. There are enough out there which don't care one bit about copyright (not saying I'm condoning that, but it is how it is).

I don't think you're going to get a reply about it, officially(other than no, for the following reason). Once they agree to something, they open floodgates. This is one of those nudge nudge, wink wink answers. Listen to what these folks are saying and take a lack of a Cease and Desist as it being okay. Copyright violation for non-profit AND does not conflict with company ideals(like Nazi Max or something) is generally okay. There are procedures to this anyway. Don't worry, you wouldn't be immediately taken to court in a lawsuit for personal use. You would get a message first. If you planned to sell anything, that would be a flat out no no.

I am NOT speaking on behalf of Telltale nor any other character/creator rights holders. I am only speaking of personal and friend's DMCA experience over years.
