Would these flashbacks have worked better if...?

(I haven't actually played any of S3 yet but I've learnt about these flashbacks and how bad they are.)

Basically given the negative response I gather Clem's 3 to 4 flashbacks have been getting on the whole and how it treats Kenny, Jane and the like, I'm impulsively wondering if, rather than trying to distil it all into 3-5 minute sum ups to get to the same point, whether it would have been better for Telltale to have flashbacks with Clem in every episode, expand on Clem's adventures between Season 2 and 3 and build up to any deaths and retcons for the sake of a fresh start?

  • I do believe that would've worked far better, Derek!

Telltale can still place flashbacks in which Kenny, Jane and Wellington appear, in later episodes, though! The problem is that the continued tone and chronology of all flashbacks themselves will be all over the place—but it's better than nothing.

If they contained the same elements then no amount of time would have made it proper. The whole problem is that it tries to wipe Clem's slate clean to make her fit into the New Frontier narrative, they should have either had the balls to not include her at all, or at least have our ending choice impact the actual story.

There is no reason why Kenny, Jane or even Edith couldn't fill some optional role in the story, even if it would lead to their death. In fact, it could have been a great point of conflict between Clementine and Javier.

  • Given that the episodes are an hour too short, there's plenty of time for us to be able to bridge the gap and put us back in the story we created with the characters we wanted to see.

Sadly, the lack of innovation shown from Telltale was disappointing to say the least

  • It's certainly possible that they could do that, but given we'd already know that Jane and Kenny have died in dumb ways after Episode 1 already, they might feel a little pointless. I likely assume given I am told that AJ isn't currently with Clem that they'll focus on that reason in the flashbacks instead.

  • It's definitely extremely annoying and insulting that Telltale felt the need to allow new players the chance to play amid a fresh start with a new playable characters meant they had to quickly wrap up everything with Clem to satisfy that, especially with long time fans waiting 2 years for answers.
