[S3] ANF Collection of Important, Missable Happenings, and Tidy List of meticulousness

I would just like to point out a few things I noticed throughout the first 2 episode the A New Frontier that I think a lot of people would have missed, and have them stacked up in a nice pile for me to recollect on how intense the start to season three has been!

This is obvious spoiler territory, and if you don't want to have every little detail like endings or important choice outcomes told to you, turn away now.

Firstly I'd like to point out that during the extended cut, we notice 2 huge miss-able things right out the gate.

  1. The fact that Clem is missing a finger, which I'll get to momentarily
  2. In the E3 game trailer, we notice Javier has a "New Frontier" brandish on his neck; [Video w/ Timestamp] ()
This could entirely be an Uh-Oh and non-intentional,* or *a potential outcome of certain events later on (likely episode 3 as this is the direct confrontation.) If this is not intentional this was very well hidden by Telltale as this only shows in the one scene I found, and just as shown with Clem's missing finger, the trailer footage is set in a potential outcome // given attainable situation throughout standard means. Given that most people who have completed the episodes would go looking for the next episodes clues rather than the Trailer for the season alltogether.

About Clem's missing finger, this is 1 of 4 options, given your choice at the end of season 2, and I want to give HUGE props to telltale on how subtle the clues for these are, which I'll describe w/ the appropriate/corresponding options.

  1. Kept Kenny alive which results in my personal saddest death thus far and Clem receiving a "harry potter" scar on her forehead, (ie. two scarred gashes, closest to a lightning bolt in comp. to the rest.

  2. Kept Jane alive, which nets Clem no injury, however incredible mental scarring in not only Clem's head but mine as well... You could even hear the noose/body swaying before opening the door... Its the little things man. (If you somehow missed it, AJ's middle name was brought up to allow Jane to mention a sad thing (her deceased sister as a suggestion) not only to demonstrate Jane's depression seeping into her everyday life and overcome her, but also demonstrate that today was the day she made her up her mind to commit suicide. This being indicated through her ending speech of roughly "If I were to be naming a child this is what I would consider..." This, to me, shows that the child in her, which was not at a far enough fetal developing stage to have a "baby bump" was, at the time she spoke that line, alive, but she is already considering it and herself dead and gone, nonexistent.

  3. Going to Wellington and leaving Kenny/Jane, which leaves Clem with a straight scar across the cheek from a bullet graze as she ran as a group of raiders, likely the New Frontier overpowered Wellington. Another key thing to notice with this ending is that AJ falls on his head hard as Edith is shot and killed, and while we do not know IF this is intentional we do know how meticulous some of the outcomes have been thus far and shouldn't rule out any mental damage.

  4. Going alone at the end of season two, albeit killing Jane and Kenny, or I believe killing one and walking away from the other, nets you with the Trailers option of Clem missing a finger, and while I said in option 3 the child could have brain damage, it is all more likely in this option, as the baby was dropped from Clem's arms onto the ground at a rapid rate, mind you without the clasp of a dying women to somewhat potentially cushion somewhat of the fall. I'm also very concerned with WHO amputated Clem's finger, as it was only seemingly broken/inflamed and not straight. presumably TNF would have, as Clem brandishes the logo and needed aide and is now running from them, indicating she could have left them without some end of her bargain for the amputation. (While that only applies to this option, she does, regardless of ending, have the brandish and is wanted, so specifically for this outcome that is the likely case, however for the remaining outcomes. TNF were presumably "extremely persuasive" and lured her into joining and Clem just left after she got to see what TNF was like at its roots of functioning on a societal level.)

A few other things I'd like to add that I found strange, or things I'd like to give props to telltale are as follows

  • The fact that Telltale understand how far the fanbase will take any given clue, if mentioned in physical speech, as fact. This being the line covering David's death that was very brief but you couldn't get around. You believe without a second thought David is dead, which 100% genuinely shocked me at the end of episode two. I know I know everyone else probably saw it coming because it wasn't explicitly shown, but I guess I fell for it.... Holy crap I thought I was imagining this conversation happening and went to go validate the last paragraph and almost couldnt find it. It was the conversation between Gave and Javier outside the gate after meeting Kate post surgery and hes desecrating a Walker's corpse, right before the attack. He specifically states "I cant be some helpless little boy anymore -- I need to be a man. Just like my dad WAS. He KNEW how men WERE supposed to act." All the past tense leads avid listeners, those who were trying to anticipate the future, the ones looking for when David would be seen confirmed dead with a special cutscene, or deliberately stated by one of valid connections to him. Hell I half expected Negan to pop up with Lucille as they were slow panning up towards the revealing shot of whom "The Boss" was at the end of ep. 2.

***I think the main reason I got caught by this was due to the fact that a lot more than necessary foreshadowing was used in blatant disregard for general intuition. For example:

-When you find the rest of the Garcias unscathed and TNF just magically left as you walk away saying "we should be happy everyones not dead // everythings going the right way and tha never happens" cliche
-Walking into somebodys very well maintained house in the Junkyard and thinking its safe, and "oh go finish up with where you started with the gas even tho now you're alone" cliche.
-The line from Conrad saying "I'd be fighting if anything happened to my Francine." It was used primarily to set the relationship between the two, but it was also very obvious she was going to be the victim in an upcoming event. This paired with the fact that Francine is very happy go get-um and kind to Javier made it apparent she would becoming the bargaining chip. Also how the hell is she standing like nothing happened after she just got her middle finger cut off? Like not even crying or anything. Half expected her to walk off getting shot in the upper shoulder cavity considering she seemed to have been built without basic nerve function! I don't even wanna start about Nerve function and Kenny's loss of basic motor function before being... well. ;(
........I just triggered myself, if that's even a thing.

These weren't as well hidden by any means in comparison to things like
= Clem knowing about TNF brandishing and its meaning
= Any of the repricusions for your actions from season 2 (reflected on Clem's body)
= David not really being dead, and being the leader of the New Frontier

  • Clem's wellbeing becoming a bargaining chip with TNF, meaning one of the four outcomes from season 2 might actually matter in season 3.
  • Im really curious as to why Jesus wants to get into TNF, seeing as they have a largely negative reputation around the vicinity. If Jesus is like his comic book character, and is leading the right way, then perhaps David won't lose it when he sees Kate dying in Javier's arms. Or Vise Vesa, perhaps he keeps to his authoritative military self that led him to this position and "makes a further example" out of Javier and his group, leaving Clem with more scar's, as she is seemingly the series protagonist, and please oh please oh please invincible to death in the coming episodes, as Clem being the protagonist makes a lot more sense than the Garcia family becoming more prominent than Clem's backstory. Like that would SERIOUSLY invalidate the last 2 season and I dont see that coming.
In the very beginning scene, where David and Javier's father turns, everyone is oblivious to the fact that the dead, now re-dead, father just got beat upside the head with a Bed-post, but everyone is more concerned with the Grandmother's bite wound which could only at most require stitches, and is at no rate more sever than what was induced to the reanimated father, which at the time, it was apparent that the outbreak was only just occurring, and most seemed rather oblivious, such as sitting on the porch having a brewsky, door wide open, let the little girl check on the: very recently deceased, not immobilized, jaw-in-tact zombie. Likely this is just to add to the sincerity of the grandmother's fate being sealed but I still think with how valid every little detail could be in this series, I wouldn't exclude it.
*Also Clem clearly has ptsd induced flashbacks but she is totally willing to drive Javier in ep. 2 after what happened to Kenny. This hasn't been more than a year since Kenny (I think, just ballparking based on AJs age tied to Clem's age and Javier tied to the beginning of the apocalypse.) Could be a sign of "bad-ass overcoming any sign of fear" or it could just be unintended.
*Every single TNF gunman who pushed into Prescott went directly through their own teargas if that was used instead of the truck to break the gate (based on wheter you shot or Went down for Justice when confronted after getting back from the Junkyard post surgery still recovering Kate.) Everyone one of them would be bleeding out the eyes by the time they were shooting civvy's before they were actually slaughtering them.
*RIGHT before the aforementioned scene, Max (Lt. for TNF) and Badger dont exactly get along in the whole good cop bad cop-esk scene, and this leads me to believe that, considering Max is Lt. and Badger is responsible for instigating / things getting out of hand at Prescott, If David reacts kindly to seeing his brother and wife alive, leave Badger in a really really REALLY bad spot for episode 3. Don't forget Badger was the one who was part of the Junkyard shootings that killed Mariana. Daughter of the now discovered Leader of TNF.
*Also it seems to me to be oblious that Tripp and Jesus are meant to be very relateble, and they always adapt to be friendly and non confrontive towards Javier. Characters in the past who had this sort of role are usually next to go, and seeing as Jesus is a comic book crossover I dont see him dying / being held hostage in a matter of 2 episodes. However I will note that Tripp does noteably deteriorate from his consistant happy go lucky understanding self to somewhat of a "No F
cks given" type of personality at the end. Didn't care about Conrad who he claimed to have been very good friends with, Didn't care about what happened to Clem, just wanted to be done with what was presented. This could be stress on being away from Eleanor, whose ties to Tripp have not been confirmed, but they are likely lovey dovey bound.

This was a considerably good kickoff to season 3, and If I missed anything, no matter how small, please let me know! If you made it this far and read it all, or even some, Thank you :)

  • ANF is not bad, but it is not great either. Episode should've been cut into one, not into two. We waited 2 years for season 3, and telltale thinks 2 hours is ''to long'' for one episode? I expect alot from episode 3.

  • 2 Final Things I'd like to add that I just caught.

    1) When the gate negotiation scene begins, Max mentions "I didn't know you guys had a hostage." This very well could mean Clemintine, as shes the only one inside the gate that is confirmed New Frontier, seeing as Max got out of the battering-ram truck driver seat, we can assume he knew about Francine being held hostage. And if not that only widens the gap between Max being innocent in the eyes of David and Badger extremely guilty.

    2) It is not possible upon second review to NOT kill any NF member as Javier and leave it all to Clem, which makes the gate scene more meaningless, other than the fact that it forces you to kill at least 1 with the clippers used to cut Francine's finger off, if you chose not to kill the driver, leave Clem at the Junkyard, and not Open fire on the gate scene, yet you still are forced to kill NF, which seems all to intentional for me to think David will be forgiving of the fact that "you killed his men" cliche to enter.

  • Clem gets a tatoo in the jane ending. She gets AJ imprinted on her hand.

Seriously though if for some reason i ever play new frontier again i'd say wellington is canon. Its the one that looks the best with a good connection to the end of season 2 and has the best death. Kenny and jane are rushed and look fucking weird and alone makes clementine seem really dumb

  • To be fair it cut a lot of the repetativeness that extended the episodes, and had the meaningful actions at a more frequent rate. Regardless I don't think the length really demonstrates the wait either. Telltale has to test the waters now, guess this is the feedback they're looking for.
